"Aftermarket Snorkels" This myth is not the way you think it is and it does start to frustrate me at times: The MR2 is not designed for air to be sucked up from under the engine to exit the engine lid. This has, already, been proven so I am unsure why it still perpetuates. The engine lid is designed for aesthetics, not function. It does not require air blowing over it, only the radiator does, which is in the front. There is ~always~ turbulence in the engine bay because there is no path for the air to follow. For smooth transfer of fluid, the fluid requires an entrance, a path and an exit. The vehicle is designed, strictly, to catch air in from the side scoops, the majority of which is evacuated under the vehicle to the back. Due to a square design at the rear end, the air then swirls upward causing more turbulence. This is why if you have an oil leak, the swirling upward air causes your rear bumper and tail lights to slowly be spattered with oil A scoop does not add or detract from performance. It, simply, has no perceptible effect. Note that the engine lid has a rain guard with only two openings. Meant for rain to drain and land in specific areas, avoiding important components. (Originally meant to not wet the alternator, but said alternator location was later moved to be directly under the opening, causing early failing). These opening are not meant to evacuate air and do not do so. Places that sell fans carefully word their product to say that it "cools the engine bay", not the engine itself. If I were to put the engine in a wind tunnel, alone, with no coolant, and blast the wind at full, the engine would still overheat. The only way to cool the engine is with coolant, which requires that the radiator be blasted with air, nothing else. I, personally, believe that this myth is the most "number 1" myth of the MR2. It is not designed for air to come from underneath and out the lid. People also mention snap oversteer: This is not an MR2 problem. This is a midengine problem. Any vehicle with the majority of its weight behind the center will behave this way.

I agree with everything bar the snorkels. yep they don't give more HP but they help to reduce laminar air flow in the engine bay which, in my case, decreased engine bay temp around 3 or 4 degrees celsius. I wish I could remember the complete figures but it was around 8 years ago I got a pair for really cheap. BTW you have a great looking MR2 there! Mine has been my daily driver for over 10 years now so she is looking a bit rough.

Snap oversteer is mostly drivers error. Having so much weight in the rear just makes it more violent. Pair that with a steering rack that isnt as quick as a lot of other sports cars, PLUS being stock from factory with such tiny tires and no staggered (if im not mistaken) setup....yea a bit dangerous for the first owners who bought them brand new back then🤣. Suspension wasn't stiff enough either for it either back then in the early 90's (then the little imperfections with the Suspension geometry).

Let go of throttle in a sharp turn or feather it to maintain current speed. Whatever speed you have chosen is committed once in the pull of the turn. Hitting the breaks will take weight off the rear wheels risking oversteer. If oversteer occurs, immediately hit the clutch pedal to release the wheels from the engine while trying to correct with the steering wheel. Make this a reflex action: "If spinning out, immediately hold down clutch pedal until it is over). This will cause the vehicle to want to correct. Hitting the gas pedal will do the opposite, it will spin the rear wheels harder and make the vehicle want to turn more sideways. (this is how "drifers add more "sideways" during a drift, they hit the gas pedal to spin those wheels) Advanced: If the vehicle is almost corrected, gentle gas pedal pressure will expediate correcting. (This only applies to transmissions that have no LSD) When cornering with this vehicle, pretend you are racing with a limousine that has cinder blocks in the trunk. Keep that idea in your head to help train the way you behave.

But now that cars like the Hellcat exist, enthusiast are looking for driving feel and handling, first most. Reason why the miata has shot up in popularity too.

  • @UnseenSpirit
