I live on The Wirral where the final battle takes place, I live in Thingwall (Viking for Assembly field or Parliament) which is mentioned in the film and is not far from the real site of Battle of Brunanburh 937AD which is when England was basically formed after winning the battle against Vikings Welsh, Scottish and Irish /Viking forces.

I concur with The last Kingdom being #1. It is IMO the best historical epic of all time.

Some may argue that viking has a higher peak but falls off after ragnar dies. The last kingdom is consistent throughout all 5 seasons.

The King is one of my favourite Netflix movies. I love a good battle scene. The last kingdom is by far the best Historical Series I've watched.

Strongly agree with your number #1 Pick. I remember seeing "The Last Kingdom" preview image for at least 2 years before I clicked play, and it so surpassed my expectations. One takeaway without giving anything away - I think - the main theme of this show is, nobility, loyalty, honor. I felt a loss when this series ended.

My top 3: Vikings, Last Kingdom, Vikings Valhalla.

Vikings is great. One of my favorite series of the genre.

I couldn't watch it - just youtube the highlights. It seems they got really "Woke" with focusing even more on Females fighting on the frontlines and training the same as a male soldier would do, lol. Show really should have continued. I still can’t believe they just canceled it especially after thar last season. Unfortunately too late now for anyone else to pick it up either

The Last Kingdom and Vikings are my two favorite. These two were so real, I was drawn into the story like a "moth" to a flame!

Hi Carol. What brings you back? I also am a big fan of "TLK" I think to some degree the show balances out all the bad in the world, with some of the best human attributes, Loyalty, courage and a stoic sense of duty.

It is the story of Alfred the Great. The last Saxon king of England. The is before Vikings Valhalla. The English king involved in Valhalla Vikings is a descendent of Alfred the Great. The Last Kingdom is based on a series of books written by Bernard Cornwell.@@EstbXCIII

Thank you. Seen most of them. 'The King', was excellent. Frontier was excellent. AQOTWF was also excellent, with incredible cinematography.

Great video keep it up you're doing amazing things also series called rise of empires ottoman is my favourite one on netflix

Sharpe is one of the best historical TV series ever made

Marco Polo is such a good series, it sucked that they didn't get another season!

You are dead on with The Last Kingdom being number 1. The best show period I have ever seen on Netflix or any other streaming service. The actor playing Uttred is simply phenomenal. I wished that had done a few more seasons. It sounds like they had the material to do so with Cornwalls book.

The best one absolutely is "The Last Kingdom" epic is understating it. Plus if you can read the books, magnificent.

I agree with the top but I tink you have missed Knightfall, it was such a great depiction of the templars. My top 5 is Outlaw king, Marco Polo, The King, Vikings, The last Kingdom.

Lotsa love being shown for The last Kingdom, Best of the Best, etc. I concur, IF you are going to limit your list to English language movies and series only. As for me, the undisputed King and likely never to be challenged successfully historical series is Mr. Sunshine. A Kdrama historical series covering the last days of the Joseon Dynasty (Korea), up to and just a tiny bit beyond the Japanese annexation of the country prior to WWI, it's a Must Watch for anyone that claims to be a fan of the genre. The historical accuracy was near perfect, with one miss that added some context to the story line (completely unnecessary as written, IMHO), flawless cinematography, a musical score and OST that was completely compatible with the period of the show, (something that almost Never happens), an incredible script, with flawless deliveries by an unbeatable cast. Humor, drama, intrigue, action, it has it all. I'm not sure, but I think it's available dubbed in English, but even if it is, I think it much better to watch with subtitles, as you gain so much from the dialogue as it's delivered in Korean that can't be translated, emotionally. "What?!?!?!?!" That one word is Powerful. You won't be able to understand unless you see/hear it. IMHO, you owe it to yourself to see it. If you really are a fan of things historical....And Mr. Sunshine isn't the only one, there are many others as good as the ones on this list.

The King and Last Kingdom, best of the lot. Outlaw King was good too. Vikings started good but kinda faded and was iffy at the end.

King Arthur:Legend of the Sword is a great movie whether or not actually historical..at least historians cannot confirm .."only speculate" that he was an actual warrior who led the British armies against Saxon invaders in the sixth century..but nevertheless..see the movie...IT'S GREAT!

. All the above-mentioned are worth watching. However, The Last Kingdom is my number 1. Vikings Valhalla is my number 2.

You missed Medici, Borgia, Babylon Berlin. Unfortunately the last two great shows were removed from Netflix. My favorite Viking, Marco polo, Medici, the last kingdom, Versailles, The last Czars, The king

The King is awesome, once you get past the hokey beginning. The ending fight scene is relatively factual fit for a Hollywood film and they touch on a historical significant event, but do not let the audience in on it. When he tells his new French wife they will only speak English from now on in court, that broke 400 years of French as the official language in English court, dating back to William the Conquer. Apparently 300 is a movie Historians love, despite the comic book look. All Quiet on the Western Front does an excellent job of using color to tell the story and does a great job of showing the caste difference between officers and enlisted men, but the ending ruins the boot title & meaning behind the title.

Black Sails is coming to Netflix soon and is the best pirate series ever made. Part historical, part characters from literature.

The success of Game of Thrones, was the catalyst that made all the rest of these possible.

Spot on with 1 exception, Vikings should have been #2 regardless.

Vikings is so terribly anti Norse and took so many liberties it should rank at the bottom as the least historically accurate and most unfaithful.

Vikings is on amazon prime here in UK.

Vikings first 4 or 5 seasons are immense. Went downhill when Ragnor died.

I know it’s satirical but I also love Norsemen because it’s based on these Viking shows. Pure comedy gold.

By far the best was the Lost Kingdom. I’ve read every one of Cornwell’s books on Utred ! Most takes place in the 900s during the rein of Alfred the Great. Great books and a great movie series.

Hello there and friendly greetings! I missed some of your recent videos... Thanks to my ex Internet Service Provider that left me without any internet connection for 12 days and to some healt issues. I really missed your videos, dammit! 🙂Now I have to catch up everything! I'm not very much into historical movies but, for istance, masterpieces like "All Quiet on the Western Front" are a must. I am reallly curious to see "Marco Polo": decades ago a film was produced here in italy with the same subject but the focus was more on the figures of the Polo family rather than China of that period so I am really very very curious (fun but unuseful fact: I live in the "chinatown" of my city, I would like some friends of mine to watch it as well). I hope you are fine, man! Again, as usual, thank you so much for your work and good suggestions! 😄👍

Centurion with Michael Fassbender is good.

The very best historical epic I've seen in my 69 years, is an awesome 2016 released movie called "Risen" starring Joseph Fiennes..whether or not you're Christian..you'd have to admit that this movie is a 10..even better than Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator' ..in my opinion.

Why aren't there cinematographical works covering deep antiquity, specifically the 3,000 + years of Ancient Mesopotamian History (which includes Sumer, Akkad, Babylon, Assyria, Elan, Mitanni, Media, and Urartur)?

It's a good question, maybe its the architecture which is hard to replicate for films. Most historical shows end up placed in the medieval and later periods because those buildings still exist

This movie is not from Netflix, but I thought it deserves a viewing. An acceptable film to spend a quiet afternoon at home. The Fall of the Roman Empire is a 1964 American film directed by Anthony Mann, starring Stephen Boyd, Sophia Loren, Christopher Plummer, Alec Guinness, James Mason and Anthony Quayle, and with other stars like Omar Sharif and Mel Ferrer in more roles...
