Please pin my message. 5:32 This is a very true advice. Only join if you are offered full funding (i.e., for the complete duration of the PhD program). I was tricked into this by the graduate coordinator of a top 40 US CS PhD program. During admission, I was offered only one-year of funding guarantee and was told that this is a formality and most students are funded throughout their PhD. That was a big lie. After year one they told me that no funding is available, thus I had to leave the program. Also, when I arrived to the United States, I noticed that no professor was interested in working with me. They simply ignored my emails untill I leave the program due to insufficient funding. Recently, this has become a common trick applied by some underfunded state schools. They bring in lots of PhD students just to use them as a cheap temporary teaching labour, and then easily get rid of them using funding as an excuse. In reality these PhD students are there just be exploited as cheap TAs. Department never considered them as research students and had no intention of providing any support for their success.

There is no minimum requirement for publications. Review publications aren't as valuable as research publications but still any work will add value to your case.

Teaching experience isn't mandatory because many freshers who are either pursuing their Bachelor's or Master's degree or just completed them also apply for PhD. Publications, Conferences, awards count as an advantage. Thesis with research component is like a research experience and a good opportunity to show your writing skills. Most Universities don't ask for thesis at the time of application. It is good if you know certain things but better not to mention, if it is irrelevant to the program you are applying for.

If the funding comes from the US university, then there won't be such requirements. But if you are funded by some organization/govt from your own country, then you may have to come back based on their terms
