Top 6 reasons you have earwigs
www.rovepestcontrol.com/top-6...
Earwigs are a pretty gross pest and they got that name because people thought they would climb in ears and lay eggs in your brain. While that isn’t really true, you’ll learn in this post the top 6 reasons you have earwigs in your home.
Most earwigs overwinter in homes to survive
As temperatures get colder throughout the year, many pests will be looking for new homes to breed and nest in. This is the sort of things earwigs do as well, which is why you may be seeing them in your home.
As a precaution, you may want to focus on sealing entry points where pests get in. Earwigs are very small, and like most insect pests, they can squeeze in gaps as little as an 1/8th of an inch.
Many insect pests like earwigs come in through places such as under doors, through gaps in windows, as well as through tiny cracks in the walls and foundation around your home.
We recommend that sealing those potential entry points as well as establish a barrier treatment of pest control product to quickly eliminate those pest that do make it through. This can help reduce and eliminate pests before they are able to start nesting in your home.
Thigmotactic preferences the anti-claustrophobic pest
Now you’ve probably heard of things being claustrophobic and hating tight enclosed spaces, but there are actually things that enjoy tight spaces. Earwigs are such pests.
The scientific term for it is thigmotactic. This means that these pests actually enjoy being squished into small tight spaces (positively thigmotactic). This is why pests like roaches and earwigs will come into your home as well.
They want to be squished in small places inside your home like inside tiny cracks and in between the walls of your home.
Food sources bring in earwigs
Another common reason you could see earwigs in your home this winter is that during the transition to fall and winter, many food sources become more readily available in close proximity to the home. Depending on the species earwigs can feed on both plant mater as well as insects and other pests.
The pest-eating kind are less common, but earwigs are very versatile pests. They enjoy living in dark, moist places and those typically are very abundant during the fall.
One common cause of this is falling leaves. As leave piles build up and start to decay, they can create a lot of benefits for earwigs.
As a food source, earwigs feed on the decaying leaves. As a food source for other pests as well, this also attracts other pests to the leafy area. The earwigs can eat those pests as well.
Fall in general also attracts pests into your home from colder temperatures, so as other pests come into your home earwigs can follow.
Excess moisture
Excess moisture is common from things like decaying leaves which is an attractive food sources for earwigs, but also creates an ideal environment for breeding. Earwigs like to lay eggs in moist dark areas as well.
To help prevent this, you can clear out leaf piles and leaves in your gutters. Fixing leaky faucets and pipes is another step to reduce moisture.
You may also consider installing dehumidifiers to reduce excess moisture in places like basements and attics, where these pests can gather.
Aggregation pheromone
Earwigs also release a special pheromone that attracts more of these pests together. Pheromones are communication scents that some pests release.
Earwigs use these scents as a means of both defense against other threats, as well as to attract more of their same species. Since these pests enjoy tight knit quarters, bringing in more of their friends only makes sense!
Exterior lighting
The last major reason you can have an influx of earwigs in your home leading into winter is that your exterior lights may be bringing them in. Like many other pests, earwigs are attracted to light, but with other pests being attracted, it creates a food source for earwigs as well.
This light attraction can bring in earwigs all year long, but typically you’ll have your exterior lights on for longer periods as it heads into winter. With the additional hours of your exterior lights being on, the chances of earwigs being attracted into your home from it increases.
You can reduce this element by reducing the amount of time the exterior lights are on, or simply replace exterior lighting with bug bulbs or other bulbs that are less attractive than traditional incandescent bulbs. Keep in mind that it is not just exterior lights, but light that may flood out of the interior of the home to the exterior via windows.

I know from personal experience that earwigs will crawl into your ears. I have been awakened at night by the sound and motion of something in my ear feeding on my earwax! Of course I didnt know the culprit at first. I just ran to the sink and flushed out my ear with hydrogen peroxide and an earwig comes out with the flush. Gross! This has to happened to others for the earwig to earn this name.

Wanna hear a 100% true and terrifying tale of just how evil these things are, that is guaranteed to give you nightmares? Okay, but don't say I didn't warn you!!! One year, in middle school, a bunch of us thought that it would be a blast to float a local river. We looked around and instead of going for the customary inner tube, we grabbed a "Tom Sawyer" like wooden raft (think large pallet) from a backyard. We lugged it down to the river, then climbed aboard and set off for a day of fun. What started as a grand adventure quickly turned into the river float from hell. As we drifted along we began to notice a couple of earwigs wandering across the planks..... There would be no joy on the river this day. The longer we floated the lower the raft submerged into to river. The lower the raft submerged, the greater the number of earwigs, until there were HUNDREDS, all scrambling from their hidey-holes, looking for a dry spot to haul themselves up onto. In desperation they quickly discovered that if they scaled US they could remain dry! As the raft sank ever deeper, they, and we, were soon fully in the river. We all floated at the same rate, human and earwig alike, so there was no escaping them! Soon our heads were their only escape they could find. Girl or boy made no difference, we were all most unhappy. We had no choice but to haul ourselves onto the shore, which was thick with thorny brambles. Tired, cut up, and defeated we made our way home..... each of us hating earwigs that much more. Yup, I'm no fan.

If you still have an earwig problem, buy some insect killer and spray/sprinkle it under any object that sit on the ground in your yard. Like crickets and other nocturnal insects, they require damp, dark places to hide during the day, so take those kinds of places away from them, and they'll disappear. They don't live in your house, they just get in while wondering/hunting. Guaranteed when you flip over something laying outside in the yard, you'll find a colony. Pretty simple to get rid of them, if you keep a tidy yard.

Had a huge problem with wolf spiders in and around the house.. so much so i was bit more than a handful of times by a spider known not to really bite people and those dudes hurt.. for a few days.. but i ended up killing off most of those, at least im not seeing any more big 2 inch to 3 inch ones running aroubd.. so now i get earwigs and these little brown/black beetles and click beetles.. a lot of em.. and those big red ants.. but seems like as soon as i spray for one the other takes over.. my property couldnt be more dry and without vegetation and keep grass cut... house is not cluttered and i think is why im able to spot every crawley dude that enters the abode.. those centipede things are in the place also and never see a small one. Theyre always 3" long with all the legs and crap.. and fast as hell.. those things have literally fallen on me a few times.. creepy.. but better earwigs than those spiders.. id wake up with an itch and then like getting hit with a dart it shoots up the skin then throbs for a while.. then is sensitive to touch for a few days.. not fun

A balance of spiders in the home is good to have but unfortunately something about your environment must've really appealed to a few mating pairs lolz.

My apartment is clean… gosh it probably doesn’t seem like it after me saying there was a roach too ugh gross… my neighbors are the nasty ones who probably bring them to my apartment. Anyway, then I had to take my inhaler because I couldn’t breathe with all that spraying i did ugh 😩

All apartments have cockroaches. They lie in wait for you to fall asleep so they can crawl all over you. But just so you know, cockroaches are far worse than earwigs, because a cockroach doesn't have the ability to walk backwards, and can only crawl forward. So if they crawl in your nose while you're sleeping, you have to wait for it to crawl all the way to the back of your throat to spit it out. Ever wake up coughing or a tickle in your throat? Probably a bug. Their spiny legs will prevent you from blowing them out through your nose too. But if one crawls in your ear, they can only keep crawling further in. Then they panic and start scratching, which is extremely painful and you can only remove it with curved tweezers b/c it'll go past the curve in your ear canal. Sleep tight.

Can you tell me how to get them out of my garden and stop eating my fruits and vegetables lol. One day I had the first bell pepper ripening to a beautiful red, it was just about ready and I said “I will give it one more day and tomorrow I am going to pick it to use in the dish I want to make”. Well, long story short, I go there the next morning and there is a giant hole in the pepper and when I looked closer the entire inside of the pepper was full of earwigs like maybe 20-30 or more. Do you know good ways to protect fruit and vegetable plants from earwigs?

  • @RovePestControl

    @RovePestControl

    Жыл бұрын

To protect your fruit and vegetable plants from earwigs, you can try a few methods. Creating a barrier with diatomaceous earth around your plants can deter them. You can also set up traps using rolled-up newspaper or cardboard tubes, placing them near your plants overnight and disposing of them in the morning. Additionally, reducing excess moisture in your garden and removing any debris where earwigs might hide can help. Experiment with these techniques and see which works best for you!

  • @iCazZiStronZi

    @iCazZiStronZi

    Жыл бұрын

@@RovePestControl I have tried the diatomaceous earth method and it seems to work, the only issue is if the soil is wet or when you water the plants and wet the diatomaceous earth it becomes more ineffective and I find myself having to constantly re-apply it which can make it a very expensive method because my garden is pretty large with about just over 30 fruit and vegetable plants I would say. I tend to keep my garden fairly clean of debris, but my garden is surrounded with stone retaining walls which seems to be like an earwig paradise lol they love to live in the cracks between the stones in the wall. I have never tried the tube traps, I think I will try this next. Do I just simply leave the tubes on the ground near the plants? Or is there something else I have to do, like put some sort of bait inside or something like that? I appreciate the help, fingers crossed that this will help. You don’t know the struggle when they destroy your beautiful crops that you spent time planting and caring for and waiting a long time for them to grow and excited to pick and eat them, just for the earwigs to eat them instead 🤣

Well....I’m screwed because my husband has refused to trim trees over the past 20....We live in N.Y. so spring and summer last only a few months....The Oak and Maples have continuously grown and now block all sunlight to the point of our home being dark after 10 a.m. I grew up in Fl, and if I ever saw a ‘pincher bug’ it was usually in the woods...Orkin probably contracted with every home in my neighborhood...Truly, the northeast is bug free compared to Fl., so I think I may have gotten too use to not having daily encounters with big uglies...That all ended the other night when I grabbed my 64oz insulated mug of freshly brewed sweet tea...ah...sweet tea...My one vice of the south I’m keeping...If you can’t figure out where I’m going with this well....I guess I have to put it in text... Yep...a nasty little earwig found its way into my mug, and I, I, *shutter*....I ended up with little, bleep, bleep in my mouth...🤢...🤮... Never thought for a sec that it was any kind of bug....it felt like a piece of thick plastic wrap that I quickly spit in my hand...Nope...not plastic...🤮... I’ve since wracked my brain...How did that little fart get in there? The straw? I’ve never seen one inside my home....Then...sigh...the answer came not more 30 minutes ago as I was standing at my kitchen sink fixing my husband a pitcher of tea....I see something fall from the ceiling 😳 and land right in front of me 😮 next to the open pitcher of tea...Cue the creepy 😬 music....An earwig....I sprayed it with dish soap which killed it and walked out to show/tell my hubby what had happened, and said, I’m 98% sure this is how one ended up in my mug... Sigh...he shrugged... WTHeck...☹️ 🥺 😠 🤔 Perhaps one night he will crawl into bed and find a harmless little snake to tickle his toes... Harmless or not, he can’t stand them...😏😏 Yeah, I probably won’t exert the energy, but it’s a fantasy that pushes my irritation aside...😏

I have never seen wings on these earwigs, I don't know what kind they are. All I know is these ones do not fly, being from New Mexico originally, I grew up hearing stories about the earwigs showing up with the spanish and decimating the native's corn. As far as I know europeans call them pincher bugs. Well that is because corn is native american not european. Not saying you are wrong but that is why I have learned. Do you have any references to your claim?

The idea they crawl into your ear has absolutely nothing to do with why they're called earwigs. Their named (eare wicga), because the shape of their wing or 'wicga' is shaped like an ear 'eare'. Their name means ear-wing.
