I use several grits of metal grinding belts on my wood belt sander to shape and sharpen metal - a 6.5" dagger with sheath and a 6" sharp spike from a very long 1/2" hex head bolt for the top of my armored 6' bamboo walking staff. The trick of toothpaste as a sharpening tool is a bit problematic but interesting.

Your drill sharpening method is good but very slow. I am a machinist by trade and in production can't waste time. But I sharpened so many bits got where I could eyeball it perfect. Make sure to relieve the cutting edge.
