That take on the Guentzel deal I can't say I agree with. Even if you say it's a lateral move, it's an additional 5 years (based on aging curve) of a player of the same caliber. Saying Stamkos was great belies not having watched the Lightning all that much. he was a disaster at 5 on 5 defensively and had a massive negative rating.

not to mention sergachev was a defensive liability most nights. i feel like people that dont watch the lightning were grossly overhyping how good he actually was. Tampa losing sergachev/stamkos and adding guentzel/mcdonagh more than likely will make a significant positive impact on their team defence. scoring may take a bit of a dip, but you never know. it will be interesting to see how good our powerplay is now

About the Campbell/Detroit goalie situation. 1. Campbell is a Michigan boy, signed to league min, to play in the AHL. He is an upgrade from Huttonson (?) and will hopefully help Cossa develop, it’s low risk high reward in the case he remembers where he left his talent he had during his time playing for Toronto. Talbot is an upgrade over Reimer purely on consistency. He and Lion will be sharing the crease. I think Husso might still be hurt, or the mgmt has lost faith in him. If I remember correctly he was playing shakey, got hurt, came back for a game or two, got hurt again, came back, played half a game, and was hurt again.

It's not a low risk high reward move. It's a no risk high reward move. You can bury it 100% in the AHL. The only thing it costs you is a contract slot.

Maybe Cam Talbot will be tet latest in a long line players to make a twilight end run for the Wings. Mike Vernon, Osgood in two tours and Hasek all were up there in years when they won cups in Detroit. My knee jerk reaction yesterday was "why him?" until I remembered not to question the Captain.

Stamkos is NOT what people think he is anymore- as a fan who has watched every game since Stammer came into the league. Tampa had to improve 5x5 and Stamkos stinks 5x5. Collapses under pressure and passes to nowhere- Flubs more passes than he handles- Never back checks- rarely wins a wall battle- Floats and waits to be set up for the one timer- has gotten worse in the faceoff circle. Numbers are inflated playing with Hedman and Kooch setting him up. SOFT- will probably improve over the short term with the Preds, but will fall off quickly into his old ways.

I think there's an argument to be made Stamkos on a $4.5M deal + another $4.5M middle 6 winger using the leftover money > Guentzel at $9M, particularly over the short term. The team desperately needed more weapons on the wing, which is why Duclair's addition was such a gamechanger. However, you're right about Stammer's play recently. Anyone saying "40 goals" and "lateral move" in comparison to Guentzel just hasn't watched him outside the Panthers series. His shot is still amongst the best ever but on-ice doesn't do anything else well. Hagel has already passed him up as LW1.

Dallas moves were weird. You buyout Suter because presumably you think he's bad value as a 5-6 at his caphit. Which to be fair he was. But then you sign bottom pairing guys at like the same money. Why not just keep the guy? Now you are paying him a chunk to not play for you and you picked up equally bad options. I don't get how this made more sense then just riding out that deal. It seems like they wanted the devil they didn't know instead of the one they did. And that just seems stupid.

Not really a signing but the worst move was Washington trading for Pierre Luc Dubois. Seven years at $8.5 million will feel like an eternity. Honourable mention to Juraj Slavkovsky 8 years at $7.6 million for a guy with zero track record. That is the worst kind of wishful thinking. I'd want my 7.6$ million forward to score 35 and 75. Could easily happen, but when? Pittsburgh picked up Kevin Hayes for two years at 3.5714 million. He's not worth it. #7 Warren Foegele 3 years at $3.5 million, just too much for the offense he brings. #6 Dallas 3 years at $3.25 for Lyabushkin seems pricy #5 LA Kings 4 years $3.85 million for Joel Edmundson. Love Joel but he can't stay healthy. He has never played 80 games in the regular season. Never played 70. Last five years it was 53, 61, 14, 55, 68. #4 Buffalo 5$ million for Jason Zucker?? He's maybe a 40 point player if you are lucky. The stars align and he plays 82 games maybe he scores 20. 3$ million for Skinner would have been way better spent. #3 Dallas Matt Dumba 2 years $5.5 million. Just no. #2 Seattle Chandler Stephenson I like him. He did a lot for Vegas. He deserved to get paid, by them. 7 years at $6.25 million is too much. #1 Nikita Zadorov Boston 6 years at 5$ million for this physical third pair defenseman. He got too much name recognition as Calgary tried to trade him. People confused that with ability. Guentzel is a good contract. He's better than say Mitch Marner for less money and a better playoff performer. He's Younger by five years than Stamkos. I think they had given up on Sergachev ever being the Hedman replacement especially after the injury. J.J. Moser is a nice add, young offensive defensemen. Moser is young. They are trying to extend their teams window by getting a little younger and cheaper.

Yeah we’re so confused in Tampa. Seems that they got rid of the injury prone players & don’t want to wait around a year or 2 for them to be totally healthy and stammer will start breaking down pretty soon -he’s on blood thinners too. I think with Stammer this really started last year when the final blow to his comfort level was when Alex Killorn was traded-it was the final straw and Stammer had a very bad attitude and Killer was chirping in Stammers ear of how Tampa will stab you. Stammer for 3/4 of season was miserable and when you’re the Captain and you’re leaving the team full of new guys hanging it was noticeable on the ice. The new guys were pumped and Stammer their Capt was miserable & Killer is running his mouth because he’s still angry. It wasn’t until we got Dumba and Duclair that we had an up,fit in the locker room and even Stammer said it helped. Then we had a team full of happy players. If people have p,ahead a team sport you know how important it is to have a locker room with a few types of personalities in it to break thru the stress and make it a brotherhood. We had lost a lot of that in 2 years and now a room full of new guys and a pissed soured captain. The Capt tag played a role in this decision in my opinion and it makes you a target if you can’t control your emotion and can’t do your part. It’s not like they would remove that C from him so i think that came into play. I love Stammer and this hurts. But to say Tampa isn’t faithful is wrong -he’s been here 16 years and Hedman is right there at 15yrs -that’s not popular in the league. Everyone knows in any sport you start getting in mid 30s and everyone is waiting for that one day that you aren’t the same-that happens in normal life-you wake up and you aren’t the same. Father time is undefeated. So being a soured Capt didn’t help and as Capt he knew we needed to see what we needed to fill after the year. Tamp was very faithful and we had a stretch when we didn’t have Stammer do to injury and health issues-he has some kind of problem that is kept quiet. Plus Alex Killer Killorn is chirping in his ear and hoping Stammer would leave the bolts for revenge -also remember Stammers best friend is Marty St. Louis who had bad exit at end of career here too. It made me puke watching Marty Jersey go up as our first retired Jersey -the dude nonstop talks crap about Tampa to this day and left in bad terms and only talks about NY. It’s BS. So Stammer acts like in a league where he’s played 16yrs on one team and that’s rare that he got screwed but he didn’t -he chose to leave for money. Hes been paid over a $100 million here and your last 2 yrs you don’t hang out. So he says not about money then leaves because of money. Plus i think ppl are forgetting how much Stammer gets away with here. He can do whatever and that won’t be the case in Nashville and he’ll have to do things he refused for years and we are forgetting if he doesn’t have Kuch or Heddy giving him insane passes can he score like that and will Jake score more with Kuch passing those crazy passes to him. There are X factors that might hurt Stammer and help Jake. If Stammer didn’t get soured last year with Killer trade and stayed positive like Hedman is doing now i think he is still here and there comes a time you aren’t the teachers pet anymore and we see it in every sport-stammer is going to have to work more and take orders where he’s going-he ran the ship here. So one last thing for perspective on if Tampa was loyal-if you were just out of college at age 24 and started watching Tampa-you’d be 40 now as Stammer leaves-you would’ve got married ,built your career ,had teenage kids owned a home all in the time Stammer has been at Tampa and he could’ve come up with a fair deal and you didn’t have 1 teammate willing to chip in to keep him either. That has happened on NFL and NBA teams so it has happened. He chose money and chose to leave as a soured spoiled selfish Capt. he still hasn’t acted like a captain-i think deep down players are sad but ready to not have to worry about stepping on stammers toes and they’ll, play harder with a positive coach and now they get to try and be a star to fill the void left. Might not happen but players will be trying. But i truly believe Stammer will cool off in 2 yrs and he will get hurt over next 2yrs and that will be that and he will come back as our Coach. Stammer will be a Coach of somebody when he’s ready and i think with the love he has here and our owner that he’ll comeback and coach.

Yea I gotta be honest the Detroit Goalie take is slightly uninformed. Husso has been injured for part of each the past 3 seasons. Steve isn’t trying to collect goalies, rather find a solution to use until the the two elite goalie prospects start to break into the system. Cossa will be a mainstay in GR, and a player with NHL experience goes a long way there. Steve and the organization know that you can’t force goalies into the NHL (@ Kevyn Adams), and it doesn’t make sense to overcommit assets to a top tier starting goalie when the primary players in the system are still 25 and under. The team is young, despite what the media likes to portray. Remove Copp, Compher, and Chiarot, the term on all of the older players (not named Larkin) is 2 years. There will be 3 new young players in the lineup this year, and in 2 years I expect there to be at least 3-5 more. Most of which are first round talents.

As a Stars fan, I don't think the Dumba/Ilya contracts were plan A or B (yes probably plan D to match the logo lol)...but at least they are shorter term (not sure why Ilya got a 3rd year but Nill gets the benefit of doubt for now). I am sure they thought they could get Tanev resigned, and when that didn't work out it was a HARD pivot to just get some right shot D in the building and go from there. Dallas was pushed around in the playoffs so some hits and grit were needed in the lineup and they certainly got THAT (add in Brendan Smith to the equation). At the end of the day, this isn't the Franchise Mode in NHL...players want to get paid and have family decisions to make. While I don't love the moves, I am more than willing to let it play out and see...if it gets Miro back on his strong/correct side of the ice it could actually be a net positive.

I think looking back, the Stamkos deal and perhaps the Tanev deals have huge downside potential. Stamkos has tons of wear and tear and plays an athletic hard nosed game - will be interesting what he can do without Kucherov and if he can stay healthy. As for Tanev, i understand the thought about spreading the cap hit over 6 years, but at that age an injury or just general decline in athleticism can happen super fast - so he might not give the leafs even the 2-4 years of quality play that they expect. I also think Guenztel is a big risk - always played with Crosby and not sure he really is a top line impact player as opposed to just another good top 6 forward l.

8:34 you can think that Guentzel is a lateral move all you want but Tampa got better 5 v 5 on their top line. They got two young players in Geekie and Moser with a good number of picks for Jeannot and Sergy (who gets paid like the #1 D on a team but doesn’t play like it). They also got very unlucky because Vasy missed a huge chunk of the season and when he did come back it took a while for him to find his groove. They still need to make some changes to the bottom 6 but if Vasy stays healthy you’d be ill-advised to count Tampa out. This extreme knee jerk of emotion that Tampa will never recover from losing Stamkos is a bit absurd. Is it sad that he’s gone? Absolutely. I was 10 years old when he was drafted and nearly 100% of my hockey memory includes him in a bolts jersey. But I’m not gonna let that cloud my judgement that we got better, got younger, and stocked pile draft picks for 2025 after years of have maybe 4 picks every draft.

Only a Leafs fan would have this as one of the worst signing even though he was an all star last season. Tanev is probably the worst contract with the amount of term they gave him. Leafs will miss the playoffs this season. Red Wings will get in over them.

Red Wings fan here. The Wings don't have faith in Husso. Cam Talbot will be in the top three mix, unless they manage to trade Husso. Jack Campbell is number four, which they needed last season when both Husso and Lyon were injured. Rob Blake is expecting his core players to be good enough to carry the team by supplementing them with a bunch of bottom six players. It's not a recipe for playoff success, and it shows to me that they are not willing to send any of their core away. Moore, Kempe, Danault, and Fiala should all be shopped for some kind of star like Marner. Just flip the script and admit to the fans that filling a roster with B-tier talent is not a recipe success unless you are the VGK (excluding Eichel). The Warren Foegele signing is actually pretty solid. He replaces Arvidsson's grit and powerful skating, but he's just another left-handed shot on a team that is full of left-handed shots. Joel Edmundson is an overpay for a player who is on par with Andreas Englund as far as their role goes. He's a big dude who's gonna clear the crease and that's about all. Fortunately they have a ton of young talent still that is growing, so part of me is optimistic that this roster actually has a lot of potential to grow this year. They also have about 10m in space left to sign Byfield and complete their roster. Byfield should get a bridge deal for under 5m a year. This means that they could still gun for a big name by trading a roster player (maybe Trevor Moore after his 30 goal campaign or an extremely cost-effective Mikey Anderson even though he is likely untouchable). Unfortunately, I'm expecting them to try for someone big, fail to obtain that player, realize that their roster is only good enough to make another first round exit, then fire Blake and Robitaille for another disappointing year.

Right now I think theyre content on piling on the top teir prospects Which isnt a bad idea tbh... Theyre probably 4 years out of really contending. Unless they seriously go after it by signing a goalie and some top teir forwards. I personally think this ill be the last year of them purposely tanking. I think the owners were just tired of not having any gooddrafted talent in the organization so theyre literally drsfting high on purpose , theres no other explanaton for it. Not thiscoming year but the year after look out. Power will be 23. They have guys like Quinn, Benson. Rosen, Kulich, Savvoie , Ostlund , they have really restocked their cupboards you cant contend unless you either have a really good team. oryou have a plethera of assets to trade toaquire the pieces you need towin.

I'm so glad one person on the internet said the quiet part out loud about McDonagh and Guentzel deals, Jeannot was good to get rid of him, but losing a 26 year old defensemen for a 32 year old in McDonagh and I'd say Sergachev is a better player than McDonagh too is crazy to me. And everyone is quick to say Stammer was old or what-not but he always put in a shift on that second line and towards the end of the season he was on the top line with Kuch and Point again. What's more if we had lost Stammer for a guy like Mitch Marner or Draisaitl I could accept it but right now I think we moved an asset for a worse piece, lost our captain and the glue that brought together our #1 PP for a guy that Pittsburgh let go... AGAIN Pittsburgh let him go!!! And even with Guentzel being 4 years younger we signed him to a 7 year deal I genuinely would have rather kept Stammer around for another 3 years than get Guentzel who got 20 points less than Stammer this season for all the folks out there trying to tell me that Stammer had a bad season Guentzel put up 20 less points and he was playing for Carolina for half the season. Tampa have gone backwards going into this season and honestly JBB needs to be held accountable at the end of the season when we miss out on the playoffs. Don't rate either McDonagh or Guentzel the two yound prospects we got from Utah seem to be good but I'd rather have kept Stammer, Duclair, and Sergachev if I'm being 100% honest. Edit: Wish Stamkos and Sergachev all the best at Nashville and Utah respectively.

So much text and you managed to be wrong about almost everything, wow. Pittsburgh were forced to let Guentzel go, we would gladly take him back for 7x$9M if he would want to come. He is worth that, he is not just a 40g 40a product of Crosby. People assume Guentzel is good because of Crosby. Maybe 36 year old Crosby is still so good because of Guentzel. Let's see what Jake does with Kucherov and what Stamkos does without Kucherov. Also, Guentzel had 77 points and Stamkos 81, the difference is not 20 points. Stamkos had 4 points more while playing 12 games more. Guentzel played half a season in Carolina? 17 games is not half a season, it's one fifth of a season. During those 17 games he was scoring at a 120pts pace. Small sample size, yes, but if Guentzel and Kucherov stay healthy all season, Tampa fans will find out what Guentzel brings to the table. Penguin and Canes' fans already know.
