I would have put Mandlikova at #2. Her backhand was pure, natural, such a versatile shot and a stroke of beauty. I remember there were still photos of her hitting a high backhand drive volley at Wimbledon in 1981, on her tippy toes, and it was juxtaposed next to a photo of a ballerina, and they were practically in the same exact pose, except Hana had a racquet and the ballerina was dressed like a swan. No knock on Mauresmo, but a lot of times she would hit her top spin backhand on her back foot, which made her lose a lot of power on that shot. Hana should be #2, and not too far behind Henin in my opinion.

Actually Sabatini’s technique is so similar to modern one backhands. Henin’s style is pretty unique but it was effective (like Federer). I will root them for best women’s top spin one handed backhands. But if we talk about slice, Steffi Graf is the best.

I love Justine and miss her so much! Like Martina, her tennis was 'art'. Never given the credit by the US media for being as great as she truly was. In 2007 she lost 4 matches (won 10 tournaments); that was better than Fed that year. Justine was lifetime 6-8 vs Serena (no one else got as close). Johnny Mc gave her credit but the US media resisted in celebrating her and keeping US fans against her, and it's irritating to this very day. Justine has done and continues to do a TON of charity work for children over the years but was vilified by the US media. Funny how the US media, especially Mary Carillo, cherry picks the trash they say about different people but let other people off the hook. 2 nights ago I watched the 1991 US Open final (Seles/Martina) and of course, Mary Carillo brought up Martina's palimony situation which was not necessary nor was it within the context of the match. I enjoyed seeing Martina's sheer brilliance at the net (a lost art) and yet Mary had to focus on a negative; she of course also bashed Seles for missing Wimbledon that year. 26 years later, MC is still the tabloid commentator of tennis (last week she mentioned uncle Tony coaching from the box (even tho he was not at that event). SMH. Tabloid Tennis, no thank you MC. Ugh.

Steffi often got criticized for not playing the topspin enough, and she could albeit chosing not to. That said, her slice was so good and deadly that it in itself was a weapon. Hmm. Martina Navratilova had a great BH, but it was more of a terrific approach shot, not one to cause major damage from the baseline. I'm not very familiar with Novotna's backhand, but she was a great serve and volleyer, so maybe the same applies to her. Sabatini had a great modern one-hander that was as beautiful as she was. BJK had a traditional continental BH, but she could hit approach shots and passing shots with equal ease, so I guess she should be there. Steffi Graf? She had the best nasty biting slice in the women's game -- ever, IMO, so she didn't need to hit topspin backhands very often, but she could do that, too when necessary. Nobody could do anything with Steffi's slice BH, so I think that I'd replace Novotna with Steffi. Conchita had a good one, but I think most people remember her for beating an aging Martina N with it. Conchita's BH was on that day, but I never thought of it as GREAT overall. Justine had the best, though, no question. Consistent, powerful, accurate, versatile.

Agreed. I loved to watch Henin play. And to watch Sabatini's form and Graf's footwork always made for entertaining tennis to me.
Agree COMPLETELY about Justine Henin. I had the privilege to see her training up close at the US open. Will NEVER forget her beautiful backhand. Courageous little Juju, the little fighter had to duke it out with brute MEN in drag like Serena Williams (look it up, she was proven to be born a MAN). And amazonians like Lindsey Davenport. But she held her own. What courage and fight she had. Love you forever Juju!
Gabriela backhand like federer & wawrinka
You left out Steffi Graf, but I guess some would argue it's not a "real" backhand because all she did was slice.
I love mauresmo
I miss Mauresmo and Henin. Mauresmo was so underrated. Martina should have been on the list though.
Henin and Sabatini were the best in 2000s and 90s respectively
I couldnt agree more such a great back hand used for offense..& to set up for winners I often thot this kid is the roger Federer of women's tennis...I found myself studying her backhand more than anybody else..& w that b/h..she played w the heart of a lion... nice choice..for #1..
Top 5 without Steffi Graf’s artistic sliced backhand? Nuh Thank you!
I miss Justine so much, if she would have been playing till now may be she would have doubled her grandslam tally and Serena's tally would have been a little less

MRIDUL BORO With her wrist injury? I don't think she could've kept up on that Level for much longer
So the first footage of the best one handed backhander ever, Justine Henin, is ... a serve and a forehand winner. 6:00 Interesting editing.

Dieter Verhofstadt my same thought ha ha
I think Novotna should have replaced by Conchita Martinez....Conchita had a huge backhand.....and she was more successful than Jana
Margarita Gasparyan has a nice one hander for these days WTA players..
Hingis n' Henin FOREVER
Great list! But you missed Golubic, Gasparyan and Maria among the players with one handed backhands now;)!
The picture of Naomi broady isn't even her

It was of Jelena Ostapenko, who she played once
I disliked Henin when she was playing, but I think John McEnroe was right. It's probably the best one-hander out there for men or women. Yes, even Federer.

Thang Vuong That's a tough call, but I'd still say Henin. Could Wawrinka blast her off the court, yes. But Relative to the women she played and the men he plays, her's was *barely* the better one.

GABY..SABATINI....simple the best......then Justin and Amelie..
Henin 's backhand is the best ever women shot alongside Serena Williams ' serve
thought conchita martinez would make this list. her backhand was striking
Amelie Mauresmo backhand was much smoother than Justine. Justine's backhand was very jerky, Mauresmo's had less hitches.

Justine could take it wayyyy earlier and use that “jerky timing” to redirect shots and flatten them out too. Amelie stuck to full swing topspin mostly
Sabatini should be #2. Hana #3. Mauresmo, #5.
el mejor revés el de sabatini
Justine Henin one of the best backhand !!
Roberto & Carlos .... wow, no respect from Grace ! Fierce. :)
Graf has the best back hand. She has both winning defensive slices and top spin passing shots.
So many players used prince racquets back then..hardly find any thz days
I think the best one-handed backhand is the one from Ponchet. :)
I really think Carla Suarez Navarro should be top five, the list is a bit biased towards slam champions here. CSN's stroke is amazingly powerful of one handers and accurate.
Danke ich waist alles graft Gaby sabatini diamenteva safina henin kleisters Navratilova bilie king king Chris evert loyd bartoli etc
you guys missed Conchita Martinez...legend for sure when it came to the backhand. And won Wimby on fast courts with that weapon. I agree that Henin is the all time best SH backhand, man or woman...
Gabriela Sabatini should be the number 1. She was not chosen just because she won only one grand slam title.
Came here for Justin Henin, her game was as beautiful as Federer
2:33 modern wta still have better BH then FH. nothings changed
Y el revés de Conchita Martinez?? 😲
Women's tennis used to be just as graceful as men's tennis. Why has that changed?
Eliz Kulichkova needs to acquire this backhand to save her career.
No Steffi??? 😂😂😂
Conchita Martinez should be included in list.
Wait a minute - that wasn’t a photo of Naomi Broady?
Novotna on this list, seriously?! Sabatini on the list, sure, but Gabrielle (?!?) Is this TennisNow thing legit?? Player names should be the first thing to get right.
Tennis Now you showed Mauresmo and you left the poor highlights for Justine Henin's backhand.
This must be a joke right......the one-handed backhand primarily refers to shots made from the BASELINE!!! And we're not talking about slices, let alone volleys. She's got the top three more or less correct, but 4 and 5 don't even belong in this category. Put Stiffi back on the list!!!
This list was horrible!!!!!! My child hood crush Gaby sabatini being number 3???????? We need a re vote 🗳
Henin from females, Wawrinka from males! The two deadliest backhands for man and woman respectively…one-handed or otherwise actually!
Lmao, Grace, you said Roberto and Carlo. Smh..
If crying like a little girl is a good qualifier, then Roger Federer should be second on this list!
Never heard of Hana Mandlíková until now.

Then you have some FUN times ahead. She was a great dynamic player. Great to watch.
Hi - you are so wrong. How can you pick somebody with a backhand volley before a player with a good backhand groundstroke? At least Navratilova hit a good normal backhand.
I would replace Novotna with Martinez.
Uh right.....
kind won 12 not 39
Can this woman pronounce at least one name correctly? I guess not...
Should have separate categories of topspin, slice, and volley. I'd probably vote for the big winners, Court, Graf, King. Navratalova on the volley. Don't matter how graceful your swing is if you don't win.
Man, those eyebrows have really been painted on at some weird angle!
votox excess
navarro should be no 2
Hennin an Maurismo. They were the real sport
That's not broady it's ostapenko
terrible footage
Henin and Mauresmo - yes, I completely understand. i used to try and copy Henin's shb when i did my initial training 2003- . but the rest? they look really ugly and horrible: little, poking strokes that would generate no power or spin in ^any era. shocking. tennis just seemed to be game of poking and endless running around the court before the late 1990s.really unwatchable. sorry!i know that i will get a ton of old men attacking their keyboards now ...
Maresmo..a total overated flop.
Justine Henin ❤ best beckhand in WTA… Federer of WTA
