    Disagree on Brett. The culture of the winemaker is also part of terroir. One region might be proud of stainless steel and super sanitation, and another region might be proud of open fermenting in wood vessels in the same cellar for hundreds of years. If someone is trying to make brett-free wine and gets brett, I agree that isn't terroir, but just a mistake. Malolactic is the same. If everyone tried to make wine the same way, most of the variety we call terroir would not exist. I also suspect different strains of Brett in different places have different affects, but don't know this for certain.

    Well maybe for You terroir means a different thing, because for me it is close association with a place. If You can get the same flavours (style) anywhere really, it is not terroir, it is as You mentioned winemaking. We don’t call toasty notes from oak - a terroir. For us it is winemaking technique. 🙌🙌🙌

    Came here to say the same. A certain (small) amount of brett is often a wanted and desireable characteristic in fex a Loire Cab Franc or a Rhône Syrah. Thats terroir to me. To much and its a problem, and too often ive been served ”natural” wines at pretty hip and fancy places that have been almost undrinkable because of too much brett.

    This isn't the first time I've seen discussion on whether terroir includes the people in a location. Port, Champagne and Sherry all have more to do with winemaking techniques than growing conditions. Is this terroir? There is a separate question of the Brett itself, even if you exclude winemaking techniques from your definition of terroir, if a winemaking technique can't produce similar wine in a different location, it is still terroir.

    Absolutely agree with ending any debate about sulfites. Give the wine makers credit that they know what they are doing, and don't let a mandatory label statement influence your opinion of the wine.

    Apparently there is a debate about Gasoline/ Kerosene smell in Riesling. I've read articles that say it's a fault and should never be present. Other resources talk about it as a characteristic of aged Riesling as a desirable trait. I have 5 or 6 bottles of older vintage Riesling...and I love that olfactory curve-ball. 😅

    This is indeed a very interesting topic. Yes, now more and more winemakers will believe it to be a fault, and since we now know why it appears in the wine, they will follow the practices to avoid it. Still, I don’t mind it in old Rieslings and for me it is kind of a typical trait for this grape.

    Very good points, I especially agree on brett. I'll say though, I have a type of glasses for reds, whites and champagne. The varietal thing is pointless marketing, but I think some glasses perform a bit better depending on what you have. I maybe would go for universal glasses if I had to start from scratch again, so you do have a point!

    Completely agree! As I said in the video, I also choose a specific glass for specific wine styles, and I absolutely do not judge. My only issue is when it becomes mantra or rule that we must live by.

    Totally agree. There's a fun little myth I've heard in some Mediterranean areas, particularly in my home country Spain. Home winemakers keep thinking that it is the common practice of professional wineries to add flavouring agents, and that that's why we pick up primary fruit in their wines. Of course, it's a way to pride oneself in their rustic product, but it's still false and kind of an unnecessary way to "defend" oneself from an attack which simply doesn't happen -nobody complained about homemade wine in the first place!

    A great video!!! I agree about drinking wine when it's young or drink when you want to. This brings into my question, would you do a video about wine hoarding? I have had family and friends who keep saying "Saving it for a special occasion" yet continue to buy more wine, forget the bottles they have and then find out years and years later they have gone bad. Some tips and tricks to help prevent hoarding of wine!! Keep up the great work!!

    Thank You! 🙏🏻 I haven’t made a video about wine hoarding, but I did mention in one of the storage videos that it is important to (at some point) open those bottles and drink. We can sometimes spend too much time waiting for that special moment and it never comes and wine goes bad. 🥲

    Great points! I would say that having efficient/smart-designed bottles is just as important as their weight. In addition to the mass of the glass bottle, it should be ergonomic (comfortable to handle) as well as beign shaped so that it is harder to knock over. While heavier bottles may inherently possess the latter, lighter bottles should have this in mind. Speaking of bottle weight, I recently had a ramato-style Pinot Grigio ($20-$25 retail) whose labelling included "Sustainable." However, it significantly outweighed all other bottles I had saved after drinking and rinsing out (these were favorite wines and/or unique bottle designs). Having heard Jancis Robinson once weighing different bottles on a scale, I decided to do the same. The aforementioned Orange Grigio clocked in at nearly 780 grams (including cork), nearly 10% heavoer than **Napa Valley Cabernet Bottles I had expected to be the heaviest (~710 grams including cork). On the other end are Austrian Riesling bottles that only weighed ~*420-480 grams (including screwcap) as well as a Provence Rosé bottle (~540 grams including cork). *Unsurprisingly, this one was Brundlmayer's village-level wine, which is the lightest except for super entry-level organic wines (albeit still good quality for their $9-12 price). **This refers to both the entry-level and mid-tiered Mondavi Winery bottles.

    These are all very valid points, and you are totally spot on that as in life, wine is all about balance. People hating on sulfites is very misguided, one the other hand wine that has too much sulfites can lead to an allergic reaction, sweating, trouble sleeping and other health issues. It's fun to have different glasses depending on your mood and who you are drinking with, but this fallacy about having one glass for each wine style/varietal sorry that's rubbish. You need a decent quality glass with a strong stem, wide bowl and a narrow-ish rim, that's it. Sparkling, white, rose, orange and red wines can all be enjoyed with the same glass. I don't think the no oak/less oak/more oak is better debate is going away any time soon, as so many people's opinions are getting more and more polarized. 😐

    Great topics! Please don’t take away my brett! I use it to identify old world reds in my blind tastings 😂😂😂😂😂. Ok, terroir is a very encompassing and often misused term. I’ve one person I talk to who only refers to the soil as terroir……. 😳😖. But IMHO I will say that some glassware is so not right for wines, take those dumb little 7.5cl ISO glasses, what a pour choice. No space for any aroma development. That said, no, I don’t think you need two Syrah/Shiraz glasses one for the Rhône and one for Barossa Valley, etc. Universal glasses are absolutely perfect for 99.9% of the wine I drink. But, wine is all about what the drinker likes, the only thing a wine should do is bring you pleasure, and if you want to drink from a 30oz bowl Zalto glass for your white Zinfandel, go for it! Cheers.

    I will definitely not take away brett. And You are absolutely correct in Europe there is more tolerance towards it than in Australia, for example. However, lately I feel that younger generations in some of the classic wine regions are also starting to dislike it. 🤷‍♀️

    Some argue that about brett. One winemaker even told me a story that when he was cleaning the winery, older people were devastated telling that he was ruining the terroir. 🥹

    Agnese, I really enjoying your channel and all the helpful hints about wine and winemaking. I really appreciate your experiences and knowledge. But, I am really not agree on your statement with one wine glass fits all. And, it does not reduce my emotional feeling at this, if you say, „.. take the glass what you like for …“Please make a tasting, may supported by the owner of Riedel glasses, and see what’s happened. I have done this tastings with several wine types and glasses and I can say, that one wine in a wrong glass can ruine a good bottle of wine. And if you do so, you will see, some wines you would not recognize it as the same wine if you taste it with another, wrong, glass. So you can spend a lot of money for a bottle of wine and with the wrong glass you will never buy it again, with the right glass you will never stop drinking it. Therefore, stop the myth, a wine glass fits all … please.

    Thank You for Your comment, however, science does not support this claim in any way. Furthermore some of the most knowledgeable and trustworthy people in the wine industry have said it several times before me - You do not need a glass for each grape variety. BTW - have You noticed that Chablis wine glass is completely the same as the Riesling. Only Riesling has 1cm higher bowl? The same for New World vs Old World Syrah? Or Montrachet Glass and Pinot Noir glass - the same thing. It is because of the efficiency of the mould, not because 1cm higher bowl will magically make wine taste better. Unfortunately, very effective marketing. 😪

    Thanks for your feedback. But excuse me, I will never follow people and their meanings just because the say the same thing. For example if you say and argue there is no significant difference between Syrah old and new world then you are argue with exactly a specific wine glass. Try a Penfolds Grange or an Henschke Mount Edelstone with a Riedel glass for Shiraz new world and an Zalto Universal or an Glass for Nebbiolo, or an old German Römerglas, then you can taste the difference. Additionally I would recommend to visit the Riedel glass company and take a tasting tour to get this experience directly by the professionals, also to learn from them instead of just saying „They make just a good marketing“. And, so far I know is the ability to recommend the right class for a specific wine a testing chapter for wine sommeliers. If your where right, why do they learn this?

    @@NoSediment Agnese, there is no reason for me not coming back just because of having different meanings about the glass topic. I also have fully respect that you have taken this discurs instead to quit any response. Once more, it is hard to believe that you can really state that „one glass fits all“ after being at Riedel glass manufacturer. I ask me, why did you take the ambassador badge and the permission to sell it, if you are not convinced about the glasses? Just for business? Nevertheless, your personal meaning is ok and for me to accept. Luckily, each wine lover can go trough the experiences by itself what a specific wine glass can make a difference in tasting. And every wine lover should be careful if a friend says, that a specific wine is bad just because the wine is „not performing“ in the Zalto or Spiegelau Universal glasses etc. Take then the right glass and the wine brings up its beauty. Also, go to talk to winemakers about glasses and you will see most of them are looking for the best glass to get the best expression and beauty of there wine out of it. Looking forward seeing more of your videos with all about wine.

    I feel for the Riedel marketing and have a ton of glasses for most type of wine I drink and even spirits. I’m now in the market for universal type glasses to use most of the time. I will say that people should consider buying different styles of wine glasses. A Bordeaux glass for big reds, a Burgundy for light bodied reds and oaked whites and a universal glass for the rest of your wines.

    Agree with everything here! I especially hate the demonization of sulfites. I have opened a few bottles that were ruined because no sulfur was used and the winemaker wasn’t fastidious enough to make a good wine without them. Sadly, the wines were undrinkable, they had gone so bad.
