Thankyou, finally someone who says painting outdoors instead of the " P" word!

Be in a safe area with lots of people. Be aware of your surroundings. I once had a stalker drive by several times and stop. Had to do a stare down a couple of times. When I packed up across the street from the park, he showed up again looking at where I was. Creepy!

@@tannersteedart I made sure I was near the bike path where runners regularly go. So that was a good idea. But seriously, the hairs on the back of my neck went up. Then I looked behind me, and there his car was!

Great tips Tanner! Nice to see a fellow plein air painter. I just got business cards and you're right, they're really handy to have available to hand out when you're painting. I hadn't ever thought of the pamphlet idea of your portfolio but that's genius. I'll have to try it!

Glad you enjoyed. I love having pamphlets as it gives you an immediate perceived level of professionalism, as often I am not finished with my painting on location when people stop to chat.

Hey! Thank you for making this great video. Can you tell me what aisle and set up you are using? I've been looking all over amazon for my wife and she needs something just like what you have for pallet and clipping in the canvas.

Good tips. I'd like to know, what is this thing holding your panel? It's the first time I see one of these.

Thank you! The easel is from a friend Joshua Been, he makes sells his easels on. prolificpainter.com. The one that I was using in this video is called the "fly on the wall". I love the versatility of it, as I can fit in quite a small bag and therefore travel anywhere with ease.

The problem that no one ever talks about is the maximum time available before needing to pee is not sufficient to get to the site, get set up, allow adequate time to make the painting then pack up and get back (OK in an out of the way place but not an urban one). I know some people who seem to somehow be able to paint for hours in the city, they must have mega-bladders.

Lol I know the feeling! I tend to forget to eat and drink, so maybe another tip is to set an alarm to remind you to take care of your body!

Is it a good idea to ask the owner of the house if you can paint it? I know technically it should be legal because you’re in a public area, but I wondered about it. Also, wear a hat and sun screen. Nice painting, by the way!

When I filmed this video, the owner came out and checked what I was doing. This gave me a chance to give him my pamphlet to show my legitimacy. I suggest you do what makes you comfortable, because it's true that it could make some people uncomfortable if they don't know what you are up to.. and thanks!

@@tannersteedart thanks, i just started plen air painting and hopefully when I’m better at it I’d like to film it too! I use a French easel, it’s pretty heavy to carry but worth the mini work surface you get on location. Maybe I’ll invest in a lighter easel later.

@@zaidshah4535 very nice! Generally, If I plan to paint larger than 13"x 13" then I use my french easel out on location.

A couple more tips: Don't wear white or bright colored shirts that might reflect onto your canvas. Try to make sure the sun isn't shining directly on the painting or the palette. By the way, do you need to ask permission to paint someone's house?
