TOP 5 things NOT to say (or do) to People in Wheelchairs | C5 Quadriplegic

A C5/C6 Quadriplegic's take on the top five things not to say or do to people in wheelchairs.
I decided to have some fun and keep it 100. These are strictly from my point of view and should be taken with a grain of salt. If you feel that you must unsubscribe, please know that this is coming from an honest, real, and genuine place. Over the past 11 years of living with paralysis, I've learned that sometimes people get weird around wheelchair users - And these are my thoughts about it.
Please do not:
1. Tell stories of you using a wheelchair (short-term)
2. Pray for wheelchair users in public places
3. Illegally park in Handicap spaces OR access aisles
4. Violate personal space
5. Assume. Anything.

Another place that they shouldn't go, is the handicap bathroom stall. This aggravates me to no end! They should leave that open for people that actually have to use it. They should have to wait for another stall to open up, just like I have to wait for the handicap stall, when they are using it!

By the same token, I don't assume someone doesn't need the disabled stall just because it doesn't look like they do to me. There are reasons other than wheelchairs people need those.

I almost fell out of my chair once because I was pushing a door open, and someone came from behind and "helped." Even pushing the door I'm pushing without letting me know before can off-balance me. Offer help. And if the answer is no, accept that. Not all "help" is helpful.

I was riding on my e-bike when someone hit me with their car, but they called the fire department and they left the scene. The paramedics put a neck brace on me and took me to the hospital. I was in shocked but no pain . The nurse called my wife and told her what had happened to me. So the doctor took me for X-rays and told me that my neck was broken c5-c6. I couldn’t breathe very well and I didn’t feel anything and I couldn’t move my arms but I didn’t panic. I heard a voice telling me that everything is going to be ok relax. The next day I had surgery and it lasted over 8 hours. After the surgery I was in intensive care for about 3 days. My body was bloated. I was in the hospital for 5 weeks afterwards they sent me to Shirley Ryan rehab for 6 weeks in Chicago. It was a very nice facility and I had my own room facing the lake on the 22nd floor. The physical therapist and the nurses were great. I had 3 hours of rehabilitation 6 days a week for 6 weeks. After that I was taken home. I had full use of my arms. The doctors and nurses were surprised that I gained full function of all of my fingers. At first my diagnosis was quadriplegic to paraplegic. After two week at home I was able to move my big toe and started to get feeling in my legs tingling feeling. I started an outpatient visit at Shirley Ryan rehab 5 miles away from my home . I went there 3 days a week 2 hours a day. After 3 months I was able to move both my legs and 2 months later I was able to stand not by myself but with a walker. All the while I was praying to God to heal me. I didn’t get mad at God because I know it wasn’t him that caused my accident. It’s been almost 2 years since the accident and about 75% of my feelings in my legs are back. I’m not walking yet but I have faith in God that it’s coming soon. Bad things happen to good people so don’t let your pride keep you away from your God. Oh yeah.. I still don’t know who hit me but Whoever they are, I forgive them.

All 5 have and still happen to me all the time. I've been in my chair for 18 years now and now people tell me that if they where given the choice that they don't think that they could live that long in a wheelchair. So I say to them that this was not by choice and it is easy to say that if you still have working legs. Like you I have always hatted when people say I was in a chair for 1 month worst month of my life, So I say wow a hole month try 18 years and then come and talk to me. Also I Really Really Hate it when people leave there shopping carts in and around the handicap parking spots. Keep rolling on my friend.

Corey, this is great! I love your good humor and warmth but also your realness in saying what's ok and not ok. I have one more question: I often wonder whether it's better to stand and therefore be looking down at someone in a wheelchair as you're talking to them, OR if it's better to try to either sit nearby or sort of squat down in order to more directly look them in the eye as you're talking. To me (I think I remember doing this with you one time when I saw you in Metro... remember?), I feel more comfortable NOT looking down at someone when I speak to them and I try to make it so I'm able to make more direct or even eye contact. But I worry that squatting or kneeling to talk to someone is weird and makes them feel funny. Maybe I'm overthinking it? What do you think?

Some people think if your in a wheelchair user due to past traumatic brain 🧠 injuries. You dont look disabled. But some use a wheelchair to get around town. SCI in the past after i fell from height broke my back and bruised cord with four unhealed fractures since August 1,2007 bridge collapse a very long time ago and arthritis in both knees.

i welcome the questions, because answering peoples questions educates them and it helps dispel the assumptions and it helps people become more comfortable and at ease once they know the whats and whys, BUT the caveat is, get to know them a little first before you ask the more personal questions; and then, ask something like : , can i ask you about your wheels?.... how does your disability effect you, what is it called,?'' but. before you jump right into the detailed personal questions, ask if a person's okay with questions about their wheelchair / disabilities .

The topic of Spirituality is quite emotional and has started many wars amongst men. What's obvious to me is that a being of unimaginable intelligence designed these complex bodies, not to mention all other life forms and the Earth itself. I'm currently searching for more of the Spiritual answers myself as this flesh is quite temporal. Even in perfect health this flesh is gone in ~ 100 years. What lives inside of this flesh, our Spirit, is eternal and will exist forever. Some 250,000 people will find out these Truths this very day, as that's the approximate number that die on Earth each 24 hours...

I was going to comment on each point individually but i basically agree with everything except the people asking about your disability one, just for me personally, i was born with spina bifida, i think people asking is a good thing, i like to educate. And in some ways talking about it i educate myself, even though i was born with SB i was your age before i took a real interest in what it is, i just never cared before. I couldnt walk. No big deal, But, i have to add a point myself, and its something you seem to call yourself which surprised me, the word Handicapped, here in the UK that word thankfully went out of fashion a long time ago. Except for some older people who were not taught better, disabled is a much better term, to me anyway. Handicapped should be locked away in the same box as words like cripple, or Spaz, which i know in america has a different meaning but in the uk is an offensive term for disabled people, i have been known to 'accidentally' run over the feet of people using that word.

I loved it when you said you and Jesus didn't have the best relationship...even more so after this. That made my day because I can't tell you how many phoney so-called Christians out there who think oh Jesus got you to where you are...bla, bla, bla. I was raised Catholic and was always, always taught Jesus was a loving and forgiving god and he would never have let you suffer to begin with. It's like that joke that was going around with Hurricane Katrina...there was a boat that went around a house 3 times and the residents were up on a roof complaining why god let them down and the punch line was: I came around 3 times in a boat and you refused to get in. I have no clue what people with blinders are even thinking. But don't listen to them. I was just asked to marry someone and he got killed by a car falling on him. Both of us were atheists. Some Mormons actually had the unmitigated gall to come up to me and say, 'oh now you can read the bible and see how God would be in your life and this happened for that reason'. That made me believe even less. Then some people from the same church came and told me, 'ashes to ashes, dust to dust, he is in the ground and like Jesus'. Oh I wanted to rip their hearts out. Just what is with bible thumpers with blinders??? I'm in Nova Scotia Canada and people here should be ashamed of themselves. They actually don't even have handicapped spaces. I am currently discussing things with 'ASK US' Nova Scotia about restaurants that have ramps...but allow parking RIGHT in front of doors. Look up Jungle Jim's Restaurant in Yarmouth. I can't go in there because there is no way to get in there and get out without rolling into the car parked directly in front of the door...so I hear you loud and clear. There's a Mexican restaurant in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia on Main ST who has no handicapped wheel chair ramp. So I was eating at their picnic tables outside. They got really mad, said something to me, put up 'no trespassing' signs near their tables and a HUGE fence and still no ramp. People should be a shamed of themselves. Wait until something happens to them. I'm going to laugh.

They just seem like they don't care up here. It's really miserable.

That 'bible basher' comment at number two should definitely be at number 1, there was a guy a few years ago here in the uk, an ex football/soccer player, who had been religiously brain washed, he said disabled peoole are the way we are because we were bad people in a past life, i mean, for one thing there is no such thing as a past life, or future life, theres just this one. But saying stuff like that iswhy i will never ge a 'believer'.

We are not the creator of our lives. Bad things happen to good people. This Mr. Jesus as you call him, is the one who created you. However, you nor I know what things can happen. We cannot put our faith in man, because they will fail us for one reason or another every time. The only thing I'll say to you is figure out who Jesus is and, ask him if he is real to present himself. After all, you are only in your 30s. You've barely lived a life. I do not believe Jesus had much to do with your accident, but he will make it easier for your when the going gets tough. I don't pity you. Sometimes all we have is a prayer, so don't reject prayers. It can't hurt. In life, Jesus gave us rules to live by so we can live a better life, but when we break the rules, good people get hurt and so the bad people. I will pray for you even if you don't want me to. After all, I'm not praying to you and Mr. Jesus who is God, knows your life before you were a flick in your parents' eyes. I'm not talking religion here. I'm just talking of a higher power than ourselves. Best to you
