I think your getting a bit muddled with you pricing TMF (it’s an age thing 😜🤣). The bike your riding is the CRF1100L Adventure Sport DCT ES and cost £17349 (without the centre stand). The CRF1100L Adventure Sport ES manual transmission cost £16049 (without the centre stand). Not quite the bargains you suggest me thinks. Can we assume your number one gripe in the next episode will be “the relatively high price” 😜😄

I came here to say this too. It's definitely the ES and it's basically the same cost as the GS at that point...but the DCT box is lovely.

TMF ... would you buy a DCT bike over a manual transmission? When i ride , i like to change gears and i think that’s part of the thrill of riding , doing something with / for the bike and feel the life in the engine ... using a DCT takes that way does it not ? If so, what’s the value add of riding a bike that does seemingly everything almost by itself ?

@@redbandit4558 hope you don't mind me answering a question that wasn't directed at me. You still can shift yourself and sometimes I did (I had a 2016 AT with the DCT), I didn't miss having to shift tbh, although that is personal opinion of course. You can always override it as well, even if it's in Drive or Sport mode, if you want a lower gear (and it always seemed to be that for me) you can just hit the shifter button. There's also a foot shifter accessory, at which point I think you've got the world's best quick shifter. It must be noted that the latter (as well as the blipper) only came in post 2018 (on the older model, but that bike has a lot of shortcomings that this new one genuinely does address).

Went to a talk by an old lad called Mr Coates's, he went to France for a month on his Africa twin, 14 years later he came back home having travelled the world. The bike he was on was an Africa twin, which he still has and he informed us it has 250 000 miles on the clock. What more can you say about any bike than that. VERY UNDERSTANDING WIFE.

I have been very happy with my 2017 KTM 1290 SA-T, but if something were to happen to it and I needed a replacement I think I would have to give the African Twin a look. As well as the GS....so many great bikes out there so little time (and money). Nice review, at first I didn't think I would consider the DCT but now warming up to the idea......stay safe.

You're right! The camera on the front was quite stable.....if I hadn't got the BMW R1250GS Rallye TE, and this 2020 AT ES (Manual one) was out, at the same time, I would have had it I think. I am, in my history far more a Honda fan boy than BMW and I had the AT 2017 version. Since this version has been out, I have always been very interested in it and you're right, the engine has a very nice sound indeed. I do really like my BM, even though I have never been an owner of BM before now, ridden a lot of them. I've mostly been a Honda fan boy in my 47 years of riding though and I still love Honda's. Good review and it still makes me very interested in this version, not DCT though, I've had that and not so keen on it, but it's not a deal breaker and you're right about leaving DCT in sport mode. It does look lovely, I think it is better looking than the BM. That 1250 motor though.....And I know you know all about that engine, it's bloody good. Good review Flyer.

Who ever does the red white & blue paint schemes at Honda is just brilliant. Witchcraft even. They do a wonderful job. ADV bikes are the SUV's of the motorcycle world aren't they? I probably should get an AT but right now I have three bikes and no payments which is a really good place to be in. :D Like you I tend to vacillate between something like the Royal Enfield Interceptor (simple) to a kitted out AT. I should keep what I have an avoid the whole philosophical mess. Nice job.

Thanks again, Andy. As bleak as it is it's always great to see a bit of the English countryside. Sidebar, I'm probably shunting coal-to-Newcastle, but the GoPro 8 has great built-in digitial steady-cam. Used it skiing in Japan in Feb and it's almost drone steady. Also, I can recommend the "Zoom H4 pro" digital sound recorder. I think they're probably a couple of hundred quid in your neck of the woods but it has unbeatable sound quality and is very portable.

The big screen its wonderfull if you have an Iphone but then i found another negative and its the little screen, it have space to fit a gasoline gauge so you dont need to keep changing the top screen just to check fuel.

Very nice looking machine but on my second BMW GS, Exclusive R1250 and I prefer the GS, just had a great ride out today and it gets better by the mile, the 1250 engine is a beauty, no need to visit Hilltop or have aftermarket exhaust, sounds sweet especially using the quick shifter which has taken a while to get to grips with, ride safe and enjoy.

I had a 2018 Africa Twin Adventure Sports. Loved some things about it, like the sound, look and that legendary Honda reliability. But engine wise, it bored me to death. So I traded it in for a 2020 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R. Suffice to say, I'm now happy with the engine performance. I don't feel as safe about the reliability, but I absolutely love the bike. Power wheelies in the first 3 gears is always a riot. My point is - I would have upgraded to a 2020 Honda Africa Twin instead - if the engine had been as exciting as the one on the KTM.

Very lovely bike, I've tried the previous version with DCT and while a bit lumpy at low speeds it was enjoyable to ride. With the trailer screen I get savage buffeting but on the low screen its fine. I prefer the non DCT version though as revving out the engine a bit is part of the fun for me but using it for commuting would be excellent (if we ever have to commute again that is...). Ultimately I went for the big versys because it was more affordable in used condition (got the full GT version) and is just as enjoyable to ride.

Good vid, I'm also intrested in if it's a GS converter. I can see they both have a pros and cons, but the twin just seems a bit more nicer to own and to look at, slimmer, sexyer (or whatever lol) less lumpy but yes the gs gives you the armchair feel on big journeys, and I agree with the TFT screen, it's nice and it's all there but typically a bit too much like all those controls on the left side. It's handy watching your vid knowing I felt the same way about it. You know what it's like when you feel you may have missed something but unlike you I don't really have many people to bounce off (very lonely 😭) 😂😂 good video, and am intrested in the gs converter video. My guess is its still GS for you and that's fair enough, I reckon I would go AT and I like dct too. If you get the chance to do light of road then it's superb, and the dct let's you concentrate on the more important things. Front end is a bit of a case of "what's going on down there" but at the same time you it's doing its job well and looking after you. I thought base price was 13ish. Anyway could go on all day. Thanks👍🍻

If I switch to another bike from my Himalayan, that's one thing I will insist on next time. I do have a tentacle out trying to check out a Honda NC750X DCT because the DCT really has me intrigued. I have nerve damage in my left foot and I can only deal with shifting so much. I think it'd be a great thing to have. Thanks for the review!

The NC750X is a great bike. I own one. Might be a nicer Euro 5 mid range Africa Twin based on it for 2021 according to the rumours with a slightly larger engine. Hopefully a nice TFT and some electronics too with a more comfortable seat so hang on for the winter announcements. Or look into second hand NC to save the cash! They go on forever...

Wether you're pro or anti DCT, Honda have produced a great transmission option. A great young man's competitor for the old fat man's GS. The tele-lever, boxer and shaft does still have some appeal. Residual value of GS might be something to consider. Thanks TMF.

Was such a pleasure to ride, felt like a boat :D Nothing to do with the AFT but was in a bike store today... my Jaw dropped. they wanted ~20K€ for an f3 800 and 19K€ for the f3 675... the new cbr1000rrr was 25K€ wtf is happening. f3 was a direct competitor to the d675 which was at most 13K€.... crazy...

Same height as you and 12st dripping wet, noway could I ride the previous incarnation confidently off road and definitely not with a pillion. To the best of my knowledge the Japanese are not the tallest race on the planet, and yet the big travel bikes need you to be around 6ft. Well done Honda. Happy travels

I saw your vid with Itchy Boots and then watched the whole of her series 2, in South America. I was thinking, more or less throughout, that she would have had major problems with any of these high tech, premium priced, heavy, petrol guzzling machines. In fact, at certain times, she would have been in real difficulty (she would have coped). You can buy a sports tourer and an Enfield Himalayan new for less money than one of these flagship bikes and have far more versatility. No one in their right mind would take a GS or an Africa Twin off road on their own (apart from a little gravel track to get to the pub (I wish). If either was dropped, no one apart from.......Geoff Capes (!?) could pick it up and it would cost too much money to repair. They're fashion bling and not worth the expense or reliability issues with the ridiculous electronics panoply that no one would regularly use in any case. .

For a better explanation of the DCT gear box take a look at the video "Has Koenigsegg Made The World's Fastest Shifting Transmission?" by Engineering Explained, (Skip to 5:37). The clutches in DCT does the gear changing directly inside the box , where the standard clutch just disengages the whole box to allow the gears to shift.

Had the Africa Twin AS DCT Electronic Suspension out for a spin last friday with all intention to hate it (Been riding GS's for 8-10 years or so with a break on a Multistrada 1200), but I just can't hate it. Infact I loved the DCT. Do a fair bit of citycommuting, and it sure offloads my clutchhand. Ride a 2018 GS with all the addons at the moment, but I'm actually thinking about switching.Only concern is the front/windblast. 6'5" and the stock screen is simply not tall/wide enough. But aftermarket usually solves that. I have spend TONS of money on screens the last 15+ years, and only on the Multistrada I never got it right (4 screens tested). Any tall riders out there with suggestions of a screen? *ponder* *ponder* swap gs *ponder*

If the price is near of the Kawasaki Versys 1000SE then that one probably is more interesting than this one. If you don’t go off-road that is. No.1 *Thing I like about the Honda* Here is the biggest _problem_ (involving time & money) between the two bikes (BMW & Honda) that _everyone_ _knows_ but don't talk about is, *_reliability._* The *BMW R1250GSA* has one of the worst reliability records (see CR article and talk to BMW owners) and the *Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin* (Adventure Sports version or any Honda) has the best reliability record. NOTE: Most *BMWs* are sold right at three (3) years due to the warranty running out and no free expensive fixes after that so BMW owners sale their three (3) year old bike & get a new one. Most *Honda* owners after the 600 mile maintenance checks just ride & ride & change the oil every now & then.
