@@scottinman5788 Look into an LP cleaning system like Spin Clean, or perhaps an ultrasonic cleaning system. I use the KARC-1 from Kirmuss Audio. If the smell is coming from the LP jackets, though, I regret that I don’t have any suggestions that might help, but I wonder if leaving the jackets outdoors in the sun for a day might kill the mildew/mold. I haven’t tried this, but it couldn’t hurt.

How about the best ways to test anti-skating and correct for it. I know that you have the RT85, Jarrett. So do I, and I love mine. Fluance, like most manufacturers say to set the anti-skating dial to the same value as the tracking force, but that’s not necessarily precise enough. I have a couple of old LaserDiscs, and they are perfectly suited for testing ant-skating. They are precisely flat and cannot warp, and have a smooth surface (no physical grooves). When I dropped the needle, I found that the tonearm skated toward the spindle. Observing this, I would move the anti-skating dial while the stylus was on the surface of the LaserDisc, until it remained motionless. That’s how I tuned my RT85 so that the anti-skating force was exact. Had I not done this, and if I had followed the instructions, there would be more pressure from the stylus on the inner wall of each groove, and it might cause more wear or distortion. There are some audiophile TEST LPs that have blank sections for anti-skate testing, but using a LaserDisc allows someone to drop the needle any place on the surface to test the anti-skating force. LaserDiscs can be found in thrift shops and online for under $2 or less. I have a local source that sells them for $5 apiece.

If your receiver doesn't have a grounding post you can always loosen a screw on it's cover and use it instead. Any metal cover on a receiver will be grounded, so any screw attaching it will also be grounded too. Taping it isn't a good idea, because if it loosens or contact is intermittent it could cause a grounding hum, which can blow speaker drivers if it occurs at a high enough volume level.

Actually, the original product specifications of a vinyl record were put at withstanding up to 8 grams. I'd say that if your tracking force is over 5 grams, your records will wear out faster (speaking from experience and research). But not be "carved up", more like your surface noise will very slowly increase.

I recently hooked up my Technics SL-DB35 to my Yamaha RX-V663. Since the needle on the TT was missing, I replaced the cartridge with a Realistic-Shure RXT6. I also had to order the ground cable and the belt. Now I am waiting for the pre-amp to be able to have the system running the way it should, given that the Yamaha receiver does not have phono inputs. I also have many records that range from the '50s to the '80s, and when played, you cannot hear any crack or pop on them (yes, I take very good care of them LPs). Great video!

I recently purchased a new preamp which I am now very happy with, however grounding the thing was a chore. I have never had any problems grounding my turntable but this one was a bugger. Eventually by pure chance I grounded myself between the chassis of my receiver and the ground on the preamp, I noticed the hum lessened. To remove it completely I have the ground wire from the turtable to the preamp ground and a separate wire running from the ground to a screw on the receiver - which is a little annoying.

A problem I personally encounter is the cracks and pops on vinyl, but not for the reasons you pointed out. Usually some vinyl that are brand spanking new from the factory, for some reason from the get-go upon playing it sound very (or occasionally) crack and poppy, and there are not scratches either, even upon properly cleaning them, even upon using an anti-static brush, those weird sounds didn't go away. From what I heard I think they're called "Dimples".

The sound keeps cutting out at different times when I’m playing a record. I’ve tried using different records to make sure the problem wasn’t with the vinyl. I don’t use any external speakers, just the built-in ones and it had been working fine (for about 6 months) before this issue came up. The problem isn’t with the built-in speakers either because I connected my phone (via Bluetooth) and the music was playing just fine. Could the stylus be the problem? I’d appreciate any thoughts and ideas.

@Vinyl Eyezz. Great video as everyone I've seen before. Just a suggestion from my side though. When referring to a phono stage just as a preamp it can be confusing to newcomers or less technical people. Any integrated amp has a build in preamp, it has to, but doesn't necessarily contain a phono preamp. In a seperate system you may also get preamps and power amps, and again these preamps does not always have build in phono stages. A phono stage or phono preamp if you want contain the correct gain with build in RIAA equalization. There is also a difference in gain between MC and MM phono preamps. I know you know this, but a newbie could go out, buy a preamp because he heard that is what he needs, and then sits with a line stage preamp that won't work.

Well LP records were designed to withstand 6 grams. Yes they will wear down your records faster the heavier the tracking force is, but people exaggerate with this a lot. I have a teac lpr550 player at my summer home which tracks at 5.0 grams and i have played some records with it over 40 times and they still sound great. It also depends on your stylus a lot, i ordered a LP Gear Cerapreme Blue stylus for it which is a great stylus.

Thanks for the tips, I seem to have a distinct lack of treble on mine (bass is great) and I don't know if it's the amp, the speakers or the turntable. I've set it all up correctly, tracks at 2 grams. The turntable was given to me by a friends work colleague and have a new stylus on there all set up and tracked correctly to my knowledge, I have some quite rare Russian speakers from the 60's or 70's given to me by my late grandad (and they sound fine on other sources), and the amp I bought 2nd hand off ebay (Sony STR D311). The treble I've had to set on the highest setting and it still doesn't sound like it's enough. Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm trying to fix a problem on my new A-T LP120XUSB. I Connected my player to some brand new CR3 speakers. They connect via Line. So when I increase the volume as soon as it gets a certain level a high pitch sounds start coming out of the speakers as if it has something to do with the tonearm. I plugged in other devices to the speakers to see if it was just the speakers but no dice. It only demonstrates that sound when playing the record player.

I bought a victrola all in one unit and the arm wants to go straight across the record. It won't stay still long enough to play properly. Is that fixable or should I send it back?

I’m a DJ & have a set of Audia Technica direct drive turntables that I’ve had for about 6/7 years. Lately they have been doing this weird random lag, like you can hear the change in the pitch/tone but I havent done anything to the turntable itself. Also it’s difficult to cue up the record when this is happening so I have to go to internal. Any idea on what could be the issue?

Thanks for addressing some issues. But besides the grounding hum which I don’t have, I get this deep bass thump whenever I touch the turntable or lid or the cabinet it’s on. I’ve heard to try to isolate the turntable on its own cabinet or but it on a pice of concrete so the noise doesn’t resonate through the cartridge. This is not a plausible thing to do wires cables are short and space is tight. What’s the cause and how can I fix it?

If possible fit a turntable wall shelf that will cure all your problems they can be baught at a reasonable price and can be a huge boost to sound quality if you are getting feedback through floors and cabinets hope that helps
