Thank you so much for your recommendations! I had a crosley cruiser (it was my first player okay) and I was trying to replace the needle with a diamond needle and as I took the needle off, the cartridge decided to pop off too, and while trying to put it back on the arm snapped on me, so I went to my barnes and noble and picked up an audio-technica AT-LP60 and it works amazingly with my speakers that I already had and the sounds are so much more crisp

Nice for you to mention that there is turntables with preamps and that they only need powered speakers to work. Mentioned this on one of your videos actually. I bought the: AT-LP5 a while ago and they are connected to my Klipsch R15PM speakers and the sound is awesome. AT-LP5 bypasses the preamp so i have it set to phono and use my Klipsch R15PM's preamp.

One has to consider the type of phono cartridge being used as well. If you're upgrading from a Moving Magnet (MM) to Moving Coil (MC) type, the output voltage of the MC can be roughly an order of magnitude less than a MM type. This may or may not be sufficient for your existing equipment. A separate phono preamp for MC cartridges will then be required that is designed for these low output signals. This then gets wired into a LINE/AUX signal input in the original preamp.

The opposite happened to me when I first hooked my Audio Technica LP-120 to a vintage receiver amp. I didn't realize that the turntable has a phono pre-amp built in. I plugged it straight into the phono input of the receivier, and when I turned the receivier on, the result was very loud. The amp had its own pre-amp, so the line signal coming from the turntable was too much. Thank goodness nothing got hurt.

Hi! thank you for the tips. I checked my set up and neither turned out to be the issue. The table was set up and worked fine at first. The only thing different was that i had moved it to it's permanent home in my living room. When i went to play a record i didn't realize i had put the plastic cap back on the needle. The needle had moved and THAT'S what caused the disconnect. I just put the needle back in place and the volume was back to normal.

My upgraded Sherwood turntable having a beast sound! However, i had two 7" lathe cuts that sounds on too low volume...so..it wasnt a setup mistake. That was exactly the low volume of a record. So that means the low volume can be an act of badly recordered product - but its easy to test your setup with other vinyls to make sure that was exactly that type of problem.

Good job again, Jarrett!!! I have a question, both for you and the Vinyl Eyezz community: I have an Audio Technica LP 120 TT like the one in your video, and I absolutely love it!! However, lately I've been thinking that I would like to find an automatic direct drive turntable--but all the ones I can find are WAY too expensive, costing thousands of dollars. Do you or anyone else know of a good, reasonably priced direct drive TT? I should probably emphasize direct drive, because I'm not a fan of belt drive TTs. Any help you could give would be appreciated--thanks!!!

Awesome video Jarrett! This makes me understand the nuance of how record players work. Although I'm still having an issue with my dad's Linn Sondek LP12. I plugged the turn table into my edifer S2000 speakers which have a built in preamp, but there was no sound that was playing initally. I then connected the turntable into his preamp, and then into my speakers, and the speakers then played very little sound. Not sure if there is a technical issue with the turntable, or I'm missing something, but I have a sony turntable as well that has a built in preamp that works fine with the speakers. Any ideas on how to resolve this issue? Thanks!

Beginner here. I have a victrrola vta-65. It has internal speakers so I'm guessing it has preamp? But I have speakers plugged in via stereo system through rca. No phono/line switch visible though. But the front has a knob with Blu tooth/phono/radio. When i play through stereo with external speakers the phono speakers play as well. Although I can simply turn the internal speakers all the way down on the knob it doesn't completely mute it. Not too much of an issue since the stereo speakers usually make the audio from the player itself I'm wondering if theres something I'm missing here.

another consideration. I bought a receiver with a phono input. When I played records, I noticed that compared to the other out put sources that the phono played much lower (than say, cd's or even the tuner). I have since discovered that the built in pre amps in some receivers are simply not that amp'd. I bought an exernal phono pre amp and now have my turntable plugged into the corresponding line input (not the phono input) and low and behold, not only are my records playing louder but sounding better.

  • @CraigBickerstaff
    @CraigBickerstaff5 жыл бұрын

I sort of had this happen to me when I bought my first turntable. I wasn't ignorant of the existence of pre amps it's just that I set up my turn table looked around it saw no pre amp switch and since I knew it was built in I figured it was just already on. After checking the manual it turned out that switch was underneath the platter. It happened with one of my Project record player as well but that had nothing to do with the preamp being on or off, it just broke after a month or maybe less so the store gave me new one.

Thanks for the great info... here's my problem I have a Fisher MT-6120 which I bought in 1975. Over the years it has played very well. Recently I moved it to a new location in the house and now see that the volume is low. I have tried a new home theater receiver, no luck. I just purchased a Pyle PTAU45 power amp, after connecting I still have the low volume issue. I do notice that if I touch the needle, I don't get the noise from the needle as I had before. I have ordered a new hard-shell assembly Gemini Sound Professional HDCN-15. As I continue to "chase the rabbit down the hole", the turntable only has an RCA jack white and red, ground wire, what am I missing?

Hi vinyl eyezz, thanks for all your audio suggestions. I have tried many different combinations without success. I have a Sony record player with two switches, phone/line and gain (low, med, high). It is connected to my reciever in Aux port which is a Onkyo TX-SR393. My speakers are polk audio 150W. The setup: Record player in in Aux port Line is selected Gain is med. Record player is right next to reciever. Left speaker is 2 ft from Record player. I tried moving father apart did not correct issue. The ussue: When the volume on the reciever is below 70, no issues, but the sound seems too low for 70. At 70 and above, I get the humming. The Record player is fairly new so I do not think this is due to the stylus. I think the signal from the Record player is not enough and maybe a preamp is needed. This same Record player worked great at high volume when it was connected to a Bose system. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Todd

I actually have the reverse problem. I have a stereo that has instructions that say to start off with the volume in the middle, well I can't do that, I'd either blow out windows or annoy neighbors. I have to set it to the second to third mark on the volume control and it is still pretty loud and clear. Oh did I fail to mention its an old Capehart console stereo cabinet from 1975 all original parts. Its about as old as I am.

My first turntable was the Audio Technica LP 60 with a pair of Insignia Bookshelf Powered Speaker (pretty cheap right?). I noticed that the volume was loud enough where you could enjoy the music, but it want loud enough. I did some research and ended up replacing the speakers with the Klipsch R15 non powered speakers and a receiver. BOOM! the difference is night and day, I cant get over 75-80 volume level without blowing my head up lol. So yeah, even tough I technically had all four components, the volume wasn't that loud. just listenable, I think it had something to do with the powered speakers not being that powerful.

I have two decks one for playing LPs and one old deck for playing singles which is an auto changer from the 60s, trouble is the sound is way too low and I have it going through my pre amp then to the soundbar via analog in 3.5 jack. Its connected via a 5 pin din with adaptor to phono then phono in to pre amp and phono out to 3.5 in. I thinking that the person I bought it off may have re wired it inside from the Tape out instead of line out or something or even headphone out not sure.

I have an issue. My turntable (an old ponieer) is very low. I have my receiver with a phono output and everything is set up. For some reason the audio is still very low.

Came here looking for some advice on increasing the output on my mm cartridge. With Other inputs, my integrated amp can be set at 1 or 2 for comfortable listening, but when the 'Phono' (pronounced FO NO) selected volume has to be turned up to 3 or 4... So, Preamp works, but just not 'loud' enough to match other inputs. Otherwise, yeah. didn't need any advice provided in this video as I lived through albums, tapes, CD's, and now MP3s.

The first day I got my LP120 I hooked it to active speakers, put on my first record and was wondering why it's so quiet. Flipped the switch mid-song and jumped scared by the 120 decibels :D

I finally got around to hooking up my ageing Project Debut II to my PC, so I could make copies of my precious vinyl that I could play in the car, or around the house through the wi-fi speaker setup (yeah, yeah, I know, sound quality and all that, but I have to take account of WAF and the separates system I used to have was just too much tech for her to bear!) I've hooked it up to a Project pre-amp, with the switch set to match the stylus type, which then feeds into a USB ADC and then onto my computer. The sound coming through is a little below what I'd like, but I can live with that as I can use Audacity to bump up the level a little to give me what I need. It's not ideal, though, as I'm never entirely sure that such post-processing isn't going to affect the quality. I'm fairly sure it's the ADC causing the problem, but I'm trying to do this with the tech I already have at my disposal.

Thank you for helping me! I just wanted to test a player before selling it And i thought I could just plug it in the front Aux Inputs so I wouldn't have to pull my receiver out to get to the back phono plug in. My player did turn out to work great. Technics SL-BD20D. Any one interested in buying it? Next I will have to watch a video on shipping these things!

I can't resist to mention that combining the Klipsch speakers with a turntable with pre-amp gives major problems. The speakers nearly blow up when the turntable is on. Also: Adamski - Killer

Yes, there are a lot of audio setups ... I can name these two that you haven't mention: active speakers with preamp like Roth VA4, or Hi-fi studio (basically hifi station with turntable, audio cassette recorder, AM-FM radio and amplifier all built in) like Grundig RPC500.

Would not recommend an external preamp. I've noticed they introduce more hum than they should. Just you an Amp with a phono input, or a turntable with a pre-amp installed.
