And here in the 2021 season, it appears that the pitching has caught back up. It took a while, but the talent level of the pitching caught up to the new team expansions. The shifting also has helped, and it's getting to the point where some teams are very good defensively. An example is that the American League era in particular has gone down significantly since the 2000 season. Back in 2000, Pedro Martinez with his era of two was the leader in that category by almost double what the second place Roger Clements was at 3.7. Now, there are several guys who have eras in the twos in the American League. The case in point I would say is made best by shohei otani. No power hitter who also pitches should have an era have to run lower than Roger Clements in 2000, and barely be in the top 20 in era. That proves that the pitching has caught up.

Until recently, 1987 was the only season of that "live ball" as evidenced by the fact that '87 was the only full season between 1980 and 1992 where 4,000 home runs were hit. Also evidenced by the fact that 1988 saw 1,300 fewer homers hit than '87, the biggest single season drop in history.

Suprisingly 87 was the year after the public found out that the owners colluding against the players in free agency. After that 87 the numbers went dont again till 93 i think 93 is the year when they really started juicing the balls.

complete BS. the home run surge was 100% steroids. if any of these other things were a factor then you would have seen batting averages take a jump up to record highs as well. but that didnt happen.

Before the 1990 season started I said I thought Bonds was the most underrated player in the league but . ..I would not agree with the video that Barry was so clearly the league's most valuable player.Sandberg was a really good defensive 2nd baseman who led the league in homers and the majors in total bases . Sand erg's slugging percentage was very slightly less than Bonds' Yes Bonds clearly reached base more often,but any decent team has a left fielder who provides offense.Not so for 2nd basemen.Plus the pirates scored more runs than the Cubs so even if they were the same offensively Sandberg was producing a higher percentage of his team's offense.Now ,in fact Bonds was the better offensive player,but again so how many teams have a great defensive second baseman who leads the league in homers .. that is VALUABLE. I am not saying for sure Sandberg was more valuable,but the video suggested that Bonds was CLEARLY the league's MVP and I do not agree.

The problem about Bonds in his first four years, Leyland put Bonds in leadoff. If you'll check it out, he has these 40 and 50 RBI seasons. In 1988, Bonds had like 24 hr and 58 rbi's and hit .288. Had Leyland put Bonds hitting 3rd or 4th in the lineup, then he would have 90 to 100 more RBI's being more valuable in his last three out of four years he was batting lead off. The problem with 1990-1991 seasons is that Leyland put Bonds 5th in the lineup instead of between Van Slyke and Bonilla. He had no protection. But yea, Sandberg was so valuable because his defensive WAR was so good, with many top 10 defensive WAR seasons. It wasn't until Roberto Alomar...

Tbh i really dont like how baseball has made on base percantage such a pinnacle stat because to me it does not 100% reflect how many times you crossed the plate and it especially does not reflect how many runs you have batted in. Not saying its not important but it shouldnt be in front of stats such as slugging, RBIs, RBI w/risp, hits and home runs especially with guys that steal a lot of bases

We wasn't complaining when we watching all these Home Runs and what do u go to a baseball game to see Home Runs and No-Hitters

I completely forgot that baseball players would say "gonna study the tapes", until they mentioned the ipod and all in all digital media. It allowed players to instantly access their swing or opponents pitch. The ipod was the easiest and most personal way to rewind it frame by frame.

I'm still not convinced. If the thesis was "top five reasons you can't only blame steroids" I'd be more likely to accept these arguments. They're interesting and relevant points. But those bats, those stadiums, that technology, that number of teams, etc, all exist today if not in better form, and you don't have as many home runs now as existed from 1995 to 2005. Why not? I suspect because more players are afraid of getting caught using steroids and don't use them.

more home runs are being hit nowadays then back then. 2019 will shatter the single season home run record across the league and 4 teams will surpass the previous team single season home run record. 2 teams might reach 300 home runs.

BloggerMusicMan I would guess it was a combo of different factors. I wonder if they used a juiced ball for 1987. There was suspicion back during that season about the ball being different. It wasn’t part of a trend, it was a one year thing where the HRs skyrocketed, then went back to usual from 1988-92. Then it started going up again in 1993 and stayed high for awhile.

I disagree that mantle would have hit 700 today. I think you do what you do in your era and there's no reason to believe they would do it at a different era

Steroids increases body recovery speed. But what it does in practice is allow players to bulk more and become bigger. Your point is pedantic at best.

Steroids are growth hormone! Hence the word Growth! Take two people, give one steroids and the other leave natural. Let them lift weights for like three months. See who comes out bigger at the end of those three months.

If you knew anything about lifting weights, you'd know that you can't lift heavy every day, or even every other day. Steroids help you recover from the damage lifting weights does to your body. So, you can lift more often and heavier. When you see someone gaining strength and getting bigger, using steroids, the gains you see come from the work they do, not the steroids. You actually have to lift heavier and more often to get bigger and stronger. Try reading about a subject before you comment on it.

That's a bunch of crap, it's about steroids, and most were doing them, and that remains the case today, but i love the results, sorry
