people talk about steroids like it's some sort of magical stuff that makes you hit HR's out of nowhere. It only gives you strength, that's all. It doesn't give you the ability to see a 96 mph fastball any better or give you a better hand-eye coordination.

it gives you a multi million dollar contract and a legup on the competition. if you haven't used steroids don't preach on what it does and doesn't do. There's a steroid for everything. He's a liar and cheat.

Here's what nobody's saying about Canseco's book: He touts the use of steroids. Now we see the players before Congress and being berated in the press. How many owners and general managers do you see being treated that way? You won't because those same owner and GM's donate money to political campaigns so those politicians won't bite the hands that feed them.

I was at the first game Palmeiro played after he tested positive which happened to be in Oakland. The stadium was quiet as the fans began to file in for the start of the game so it just seemed like a normal game. Then as soon as Palmeiro was announced coming up to bat the place exploded with people jumping up with their signs trashing him, yelling and booing the guy. He hit a double and looked very alone standing on second base trying to hide with his head down.

Part of it was not wanting to admit how deep things really went (In another example of _The Simpsons_ predicting the future, albeit not directly, there's an episode where Bart knocks an MLB satellite out of the air, and McGwire says, "Do you want to learn the awful truth, or do you want to see me hit a few dingers?" and everyone chooses the latter). The rest was that Canseco is a classic example of a jerk with a point, and people really don't like to listen to those.

  • @dionr1168

No, because it's the individual player who has the final decision on whether or not to carry out this type of cheating, and not the team. If we're going to vacate the 89 Athletics World Series title, then we might as well vacate the 87 Twins title as well on the account of Joe Niekro getting busted with an emery board during the same season.

In 1987 we saw 30 or more MLB American league players belt 30 or more homers -a feat never seen or achieved before or since.George Brett retired after the 1993 season with 19HR,75RBI's after two previous seasons with down numbers-should we hereby suspect the pine-tar laden 3,000+hits batsman with cheating.Red Sox own hitting phenom Wade Boggs hit an outstanding 28HR in that questionable 1987 season(his lone 20+homerun season)should his batting accompishments be scrutinized as well!

***** that was before the steroid era and I believe the reason for all of the homeruns that year including McGwire's rookie record 49 had to do with the baseball being lively.

***** of course we know Jose Canseco was using steroids going back to the mid 80's, but it seems he and McGwire were the only ones in the 80's until around the time you mention the early 90's when the entire league followed their lead.

Finally some balance in the way Jose is vilified by all the hypocrites out there. Those folks just amaze me, just in case those jackasses were not aware there were many other players taking that crap and many came to him to get their "edge" and so many did and I don't hear any one of you hypocrites out there call them out like you do to Jose. While all the guys in the 80s and 90s to the 2000s the game of baseball was NEVER as exciting as it was then with all those monsters hitting 400-500 foot home runs. In 89 with the blue jays Jose hit a 540ft home run which was the longest home run ball ever hit. They don't even mention McGuire, Sosa, Rafael Palermo, Roger Clemens etc etc. A little balance so you all don't sound like vindictive Monday morning QBs.

If all sports are really serious about wanting to clean up there image, try this on for size. Anyone caught with ANY illegal substance 1 time, its a lifetime ban from the sport & the Hall Of Fame. Post it in ALL locker rooms & clubhouse's. And before anyone makes up an excuse, most of those athletes are older than me, but I know even at my age, what I put in my body. Now if these million dollar athletes don't know what there putting in there's, than there to damn stupid to even suite up & play then.Stop making a bunch of bullshit excuses & pampering these guys. I love my baseball, but its high time today's athletes are held accountable & stop making excuses. They wouldn't want me in charge, I can tell ya that.Speaking as a fan, I for one, don't wanna shell out money to see a bunch of cheaters, or a bunch of players who are to damn stupid to know what there putting in there bodies.Like I said, stop making excuses, & start being held accountable.Otherwise, this dog & pony show will just continue.

I never blamed Canseco for steroids. But I do blame him for being a snitch after his playing days, cos he took em when he played but that was OK in his own eyes back then. But when he retired, it wasn't OK so because he didn't play no more, he decided to rat out people. I don't agree nor care for cheaters one way or the other, but to be a snitch "after the fact" is like being a hypocrite. Another words, when he played, he didn't snitch, but when he retired, its all of a sudden wrong. I never cared for those who cheated, but for those he ratted out, they should kick his hypocritical ass, cos he acted like a baby after he retired. He kinda reminds me of your kid brother who snitches on you, if you do something wrong. A kid I can understand it. But when a grown up pulls that shit, they need a boot up there whiny ass cos he acted like a baby plus he's just as guilty cos he used em to.The only difference is, no one ratted his pathetic ass out. He's a bum.And so are those who used steroids. But at least I have a little respect for them, cos unlike Canseco, at least they didn't snitch on someone like a hypocrite.Like I said, Canseco is a bum.

People were getting away with this for so long. It was only a matter of time before someone said something. I read Canseco's book. He is so full of himself. He did that out of arrogance I think. But home run hitters were bringing the crowds to the parks again. Unfortunately it just came with a price.

Whats even funnier is ya know how in the first book he is defending steroids? Well I read the 2nd book in a book store in 2 hours (Id never pay for it)...and he totally tries to retell the story as he was taking the moral high ground. That he wrote the first book bc he thought "it had all gone too far" lol Too funny
