I'm an old man now, have lived here in Ottawa ever since I married a Canadian girl thirty years ago and retired from the military. Winters are hard and I love the cold winters and the hot summers. Keeps the insects down. Keeps the alligators away too. When I miss Texas too much it is only a short flight away. I love it here.

I'm an Ottawa native. The "downtown" you present is where all the government buildings are. Not many live around there, so you can't expect it to be lively. Places such as the Byward market are much livelier, and can be quite packed on Weekends.

And if your lucky you won't get stabbed. More like dangerous. A cop once told me to NEVER go to the market because of the crime. For the record I absolutely LOVED Ottawa but the ones in charge ruined it. Oh ya let's not forget how they built a rink in Kanata and not the Flats because the NCC, joke, wouldn't allow it. Everything that can go wrong in Ottawa does...

@@lapoose325 As an Ottawa native (even born here) I have to agree, it sucks. Sure, the nature and food are great, but everything else is irritating. People end up being so fake, even false-flagging and attacking people who try to assist them, and even going against the overly helpful Trucker Convoy, or simply being hypocritical on a daily basis. Again, the scenery is great, it's the people and how much they self-sabotage that ruins everything in the city. Everything great is in every other city other than Ottawa. The government also does the suck ruining everything more and more each year. Having been to both Europe and Japan I genuinely admire those places better. If I could live in Japan, I would. Everything (other than work) seems so much better in both places. Granted, you can get jailed for Twitter posts in UK and Italy, and maybe other EU nations. Ottawa needs to grow up in the Vancouver way, not the Toronto way.

I m from Brazil. I look forward on going to Ottawa as my best canadian friend lives there, and I d like to have an experience of living abroad again. I know that the extreme cold and the big snow falls can be tough on the long canadian winter, and I m not used to it, but I still think it can be a good experience. The high cost of the real estate there is also another issue, but lets see how it goes. If I dont make it, I can come back here. Living here in Brazil is ok for me, but there are times that we are willing to try something different. I look forward on going to Ottawa next year. I wont say moving because I m still not sure if I ll move there permanently

I live in Ottawa as a student and I came from Vancouver during covid. My view on Ottawa and the activities you mention are that these things or similar alternatives all exist in other cities where they're often better, or they're too far to do feasibly without a car. I try to replicate activities that I did as a teen in Vancouver often, like biking everywhere, hiking with friends, exploring random corners of the city, enjoying downtown as best I can, and much more. What I can say is the city is too small or inaccessible to enjoy many of these as they get repetitive very quickly. I should also mention that any of the "swimming" locations that aren't an hour or more away by car are almost hazardous. Many of my native friends have had rashes or other nasty things. The 6 month winter really takes the life away in a horrible way too - I didn't understand seasonal depression until my first full winter there. My hopes were that after covid, some life would turn up which it has a little but still not very much. To top it all off, not having a car in this city is a nightmare, I can be on public transport for hours sometimes just to hang out with my friends. You might ask why I even live there, and the answer to that is a specific program not offered in many places in Canada that I have sunk so much time into it just makes sense to finish my degree at this point, after which I plan on leaving the city and hopefully Ontario as a whole. Thankfully I have friends I can make the best of my time with for now.

Great summer city. No restaurant closes at 6pm and are closed on weekends. That was my line of business and Ottawa restaurants do extremely well. Packed on weekends. So, that was completely inappropriate to say this.

If youre watching this, and heard him mention people go to Halifax to look for more affordable housing PLEASE DON'T, things in Halifax are insane, rent prices getting closer and closer to Toronto prices, houses tripled their price, there are not enough places to rent for everyone which makes the prices skyrocket, on top of that, the government restrictions that were preventing landlords to raise their prices were gone in Dec 2023, things are going to get much worse now in 2024... There are already people living in tents in downtown because they can't afford rent, imagine how much worse this will get... Halifax was a nice and affordable place 5 years ago, it is ridiculously expensive, without offering jobs, healthcare, transportation, etc etc etc, do not come to this city.

I've lived and worked in Ottawa for 35 years, so here are some rebuttals. According to the 2016 Census, 20.1 per cent of the employed labour force in Ottawa-Gatineau work in the Public Administration sector. Tech is burgeoning but I was delighted and privileged to learn French as an Adult. Ottawa ranks a mere 7th as coldest capital, ditto for snow load. Ottawa is a family town, so go to Montreal for nightlife, as you suggested. Cost of living, including accommodations is better than most Canadian Capitals. If you want Victoria or Vancouver, remember the earthquake risk. Sorry to say, you could come across as a bit of a whiner. Suck it up and munch on a beavertail!

“Ecspecially” - bilingualism is actually an asset. But hey, not for everyone. Especially if learning one. Cold - yeah, it’s cold. One of the best cities on the planet for all season activities. Access to hockey and skiing and snowshoeing - all accessible. Transit - the LRT has had issues. - second coldest capital in the world, btw, not first. Housing - “close to Canadian average”, and then mentions country wide interest rates. Yikes. But of a stretch here. Boring town - restaurants are closed at 6pm? Confused as to where this test is as conducted. Have fun down south. Sorry we don’t have more palm trees. I agree, that’s a problem.

You missed Ottawa's biggest negative, which is that it is an intensely car-centred city, with devastating impact especially on the more suburban areas. Acres of parking lots are a cancer on wide areas of the city. The biggest reasons for the problems with public transport, which you justly include here, is that successive mayors and city councils have pandered to the car-driving public and have failed to develop public transport and walkability outside of the Glebe and a very few other central areas.

You also have to be realistic most people prefer to own a car. And have total freedom of movement, total schedule control, total comfort and total privacy I used to use metro system and bus system here at montreal from 18-23 But by 24 once i had my own car and driver liscence. I could not get myself back using bus/metro 😂 With my car i am not limited to bus/metro schedule. To their specific road. Some areas are not well served. If you want to travel out of the city you gonna need a car. And love total privacy. And i am guaranteed to have a seat in my car. While you can forget about that with bus/metro during highly active hours Also canada is way too cold and too humid high heat during late june july august. And too boring and repetitive to be a fun country to walk outside and use public transport on a regular basis 😆 i am sorry but i am not gonna go use bus and metro at -10 degree celcius to go drink a tim hortons coffee while looking at ottawa parlement. We dont have a good weather and we dont have the most exciting cities. We dont have something like Miami or Barcelona here 😆

@@mathewvanostin7118 It’s also worth noting that you have a completely different perspective if you live somewhere with reliable transit that comes every few minutes or less and is reliable, and is faster than travelling by car. It’s all about cities giving people options. No one’s going to use transit if it sucks, and no one will walk the sidewalks or bike if it’s dangerous… which is the case in most North American cities unfortunately…

@@ChrisTheAppleOne montreal transport system is very good. During highly active hours. Bus wait time is 5-10 minutes. Metro wait time is 2-5 minutes. During low busy hours, wait time is 20-30 minutes. Metro wait time is 8-10 minutes Sidewalk in montreal are very safe. Lot of people even walk on sidewalk very late at night. And everyone feel safe. Even small height women feel safe The reason i got a car had nothing to do with montreal transport quality and sidewalk safety. Its just cars beat metro/bus/walking for reasons explained in my earlier comment Especialy in a bad uncomfortable weather country or a boring repetitive country that dont motivate people to roam a lot outside like our dear canada lol

It's especially annoying because the drivers here are seriously dangerous.. I've been hit by cars on sidewalks TWICE in Ottawa... and then you get to wait for 12+ hours in the ER after they forget about you. 1. Not many presentations are given in both languages, only from government officials, companies I work for everybody speaks English all the time. No problem there, it's only a problem if you want a government position or working in service industries. And to learn a language you need to actually try, there are many people that live in Canada for years but can't speak English still because they only hang with people that speak the same language. 2. Thanks to global warming least year the rideau canal didn't even open for skating, but I agree thought it might not be for everyone, I am from Taiwan, so I had my fair share of hot days, I actually enjoy the snow. 3. Yeah public transit can use alot of work, but on the bright side it was ranked the best city to drive in in Canada, so I just drive. 4. That place with rental sign I actually used to live in that area. My wife and I bought a place in 2022, yeah so expensive, but Calgary is much colder fyi, and Halifax doesn't have many jobs available in my field, Toronto and Vancouver are much more expensive so don't get me started, I lived in Toronto for a year when my wife and I are dating because she lived there, and looked at the housing prices seriously, only rich Rs people get to live in detached homes or even a decent sized townhome. 5. We must have very different favourite restaurants, my favourite restaurants are always open on weekends, and at least until 10pm, one opens at 11:30am that is the latest opening time of all the restaurants I go to.
