Foraging toy videos are my favourite! Well, those and watching Bean sleep. I don't have rats (allergies) but I like to see what's out there. I never considered that cat toy could be used as a foraging unit. Might work for my chinchillas or rabbits? I guess I'll find out!

My 2 girls love to play this way: Take a (dollar tree) plastic table cloth, spread it out on the floor. Pick one side up and they run under it, & then peek out. I grab it & it gets kisses & put back under it again. They will play as long as you last!

Hello! How heavy would you say each pull-out section is for the gambling tower? I think my pet mouse would enjoy it but I don’t know if it would be too heavy for him. As an upper estimate for his strength it’s about the same as pushing down with your pinky as hard as possible. Would this be enough to pull out one of the sections?

Hi, I just wanted to ask a quick tip about training my rats. I have been teaching them to spin for a couple of weeks, and have been watching your videos on how to do it. However, I can’t get to the part where I can have the rats spin with my hand over their head with the treat in a circle, and thus can’t get to using a cue. I’ve watched your videos and have followed your steps, but they just won’t progress to the next stage even when I go back to the previous step to strengthen it. Thanks and happy new year! 🐀

Probably the hardest part about using luring to teach tricks is fading the lure. It’s a bit of a tricky thing since it’s a great way to get a behavior started but if you use it too long the animal gets stuck just following it, and they don’t focus on the action they are doing itself. Anyways there are a few things you can do to get out of this, and you’ll have to play around some to see what works for you. The first thing I’d try is lure them around a few times with the lure, then take your hand with no treat and pinch it like your holding a treat and lure them around, then reward. After doing this once or twice now take your hand fully open (so not pretending to hold a treat) and lure them around, then reward. Essentially you are teaching them that they aren’t getting rewarded just for following a treat so much as being rewarded for the action. Once you do this without the treat a few times then you can speed up your hand and gradually put it over their head. Another thing you can try is using a more high value treat. Do this when they are super food motivated at the beginning of training and it will encourage them to bypass some of the learned lure following and act more spontaneously. They might even offer a spin without any help, which at this point you’d want to reward. I used this method recently when teaching Sugar fetch since she got stuck in a loop of not moving forward with the item. I had reinforced sideways movement with it too much and so she got stuck just doing that - but by using super high value treats and only working on it for a few minutes at most she was so excited when doing it that she would accidentally offer a bit more, which I could then reward. And over time this new more extreme action becomes the most reinforced thing and so they offer it more and more. Another option is to train spin the other way first. This lets you get a fresh start and you can work to increase criteria faster, which helps to bypass the issue of transitioning from lure to cue. I’ve found that most rats can get spin down very quickly but you have to increase criteria constantly. I try to never stay at the same step for more than two repetitions and I’ve found that this really works for spin. With my first few rats it took a long time to train spin because I over did each step, which got us stuck in the lure only rut. But by going faster we now bypass that and it becomes a lot easier to quickly move to spinning on cue. Finally the last thing I’d recommend if you haven’t already done so is just training the lure separately. By working luring as it’s own behavior the rats learn to focus on the action they are lured into instead of just fixating on the treat. This helps a lot especially once you get to agility or other chain behaviors and really reduces frustration and confusion and so it’s the first thing I teach any rat that I get now.

Any tips on first time free ranging? I’m am going to get my girls out tomorrow and I have already rat proofed my room, but I’m nervous they will be scared and find somewhere that I didn’t rat proof because I never saw it. I have tried to get one of my girls out a couple of times, but the girl I tried with is a jumper and she was climbing on the cage in no time and we didn’t want her doing that, so getting a hold of her was very traumatic for both her and me.

  • @ShadowTheRat

If they aren’t thrilled with being handled yet you might consider a smaller area or blocking it off with a playpen. I would still suggest free cage access since they should see it as a safe spot and return for naps or eating or drinking and such, and being able to come and go at will gives them a lot more confidence. Otherwise make sure to put out lots of houses and tunnels for them to hide in, and it also helps to wear a baggy hoody or blanket so they have a warm dark place to enjoy. Otherwise watch them careful the first few times and as they adjust you can relax that a bit. And of course it helps to hand out treats when they come by you once they are comfortable enough to accept them outside the cage.

@@ShadowTheRat ok thanks. I will try and give them free cage access but I do have one girl who is still pretty skittish and is a lot smaller than my other girls. I was only planning on trying it with my two girls who do let me handle them. I’m afraid they will go behind the cage and stay there the whole time, like they have the other time I tried free range. But thank you this was very helpful!

Can you block off behind the cage? The way I have it set up my playpen Velcro’s to the cage edges so they can’t get behind the cage - maybe you could block off the behind the cage part by taping or velcroing on cardboard (I had the same issue as you with my first rats and first cage since I had it elevated and they would hide under it - I ended up just using a travel cage to give them comforts instead with stuff from the regular cage and it worked okay, but seeing my current rats have the choice with the normal large cage they seem to prefer it and find it even more comforting than the small travel cage was).

The rats that are usually available (and that this owner has) are called fancy rats (Rattus norvegicus domestica). They may look wildly different, but they are all just different varieties of the same species of rat. You can find them in many colors (white, agouti, black, etc), with many different fur textures (rex, velveteen, satin, etc), and with different ear shapes (dumbo, top ear).
