Hello I have a 2004 honda civic manual that got 303,xxx kms. Last year summer it runs but suddenly it died while I'm driving it in the highway. Previous owner is mechanic he said there's a no powertrain code dtcs and freeze frame data no data is stored code. I thought it's just a restart/clear codes fix but it's not. Then it was parked for a year outside even during winter. It can be push start but it's still hard to. I replaced the starter, air filter, and battery and still won't start. Please help. Do I need to replaced to whole engine or just some parts on?

My first 2003 civic made it to over 200,000 miles before a jerk totaled it for me. It never had any of these issues, dang it really was a good car (and it was a salvage rebuild when I first got it @ 30,000). You guys are making me miss it so much right now. I nave a new to me 03, but it and I are not on speaking terms right now. LOL! It blew a head gasket on the way home from purchase. Thanks for all your Honda videos. There are always a great help! :)

my 2001 ex coupe has had what I label as "old car" problems. currently 166k miles bought it in 2017 with 141k. needed new tires, brakes shocks/struts. I did all that over a 2 year period. then needed new IAC valve and steering fluid reservoir. thanks to stimulus payments last spring I fixed both issues. still has a small oil leak but it's very slow so I'll fix it later this year. despite all this the car drives generally wonderful its quiet and smooth running, has taken me from Santa Rosa to SF and back with no issues. only repair I've done myself is replaced burned out trip meter/odometer backlight bulb. I'm told generally coupes have less issues, especially transmission ones.

It’s actually usually not the gas cap. That’s just the first thing Honda owners assume is wrong. Usually you need to replace the purge evap valve which isn’t hard to do anyways. Definitely more than just screwing a gas cap on but it’ll permanently keep p1457 away

The D17 engine these are equipped with are notorious for the head studs failing if overheated the littlest bit. There will be no indication of a problem other than overheating. However, this problem can be remedied before it happens by replacing the cheap factory head studs with ARP head studs. Once that bulletproofing has been done, these engines are not half bad. Just very slow. Automatic transmissions are also an issue for this generation too, but it seems to plague the 01-03 models the most. 04-05s have less automatic transmission failures.

I have a 2004 civic VP. I haven't personally had any of these issues but good to know what to keep an eye on. I kept seeing notes left from mechanics who changed the oil stating that there was a minor oil leak. This turned out to be a camshaft plug seal and was the easiest fix I've done yet. If you see oil pooling on the left side of the engine(looking down at it), this is the culprit. Apparently a common issue with this model.

On a 20 year old car, rubber hoses can lose their elasticity and can leak without being cracked, at the ends. This goes for the evap system, vacuum hoses under the hood and even radiator hoses with clamps on. It's worse in the hot dry southwest than in the Pac Northwest or coastal NE. On the flip side, there is no metal corrosion in the SouthWest...where the North and Northeast rot metal from the road and coastal salt.

You guys should make a video on how to replace the evaporator core on a on a 2002 civic

  • @aznnp77

#1. Head Gasket, Head Gasket, Head Gasket. I've replaced mine 3 times. #2. Automatic Transmission, I've replaced mine 3 times. The clutch plate for gears 2 and 3 wears out and it flares. #3. Lower Control Arm Bushings. I've replaced mine 3-4 times (my car is lowered). Front Engine mount replaced twice. #4. Headlight harness connector melted. I've replaced mine 3 times but it was cheap and easy to do. #5. The deadliest Takata Airbag they made. 2001 civic has a cease driving order until it's fixed. Says 50% chance of explosion. #6. Seat rocking, Worn bushings, never bothered to fix I wouldn't be surprised to see struts on the list, but since my car is lowered and it makes noises all the time, I can't complain. I think even the stock suspension may have issues though. This is the first year of the Mcpherson strut for the Civic. My steering rack has been leaking for at least 7-8 years. My hood latch has broken multiple times from the frame, and it happened to my friend too, but it was because we both have carbon fiber hoods that are too light. That's off the top of my head for common problems. But I have high miles, so I've basically replaced everything on the car at this point. I'm not mentioning normal wear items that every car would need. See replies for my response to the video.

    1. Power Windows - I never really had a problem with my power windows except the rear passenger one. That was not the switch or the regulator, but the wiring in the door from getting bent over and over again. That window didn't stop working until like year 18 or 19 I think. So I wouldn't call that specific to this car. 2. SRS Light - I had that light come on once. It was not because of the airbag though. It was because of a defective seat belt buckle or something. Seat belts are covered by a lifetime warranty, so I got that replaced for free. 3. Hood Release Cable - Never had a problem with the cable, not once. The hood latch frame however, has broken on me at least 3-4 times and I've had to drill it or mend it in order for the hood to close. 4. WIndshield Wiper Motor - I dunno where you got this idea. My car is 22 years old and my motor works fine, and I'm apart of a Civic group and have never read anyone have problems with their motor. The only thing I will mention is that recently the wipers are louder like they thud more as they hit side to side. But again, this is 22 years old. 5. P1457. I got that code for the first time a month ago at 323K miles. The switch valve on the cannister is what is usually is, so that's good advice. But mine was actually the purge valve located on the throttle body. My car wouldn't start after getting gas. That's a good sign that it's that.

Surprised you guys didn't mention the common head gasket failures with these cars!! I've experienced the hood latch issue, window switch and p1457 code comes up once a week or so. I currently drive a 2002 lx model and other than the head gasket issue that JUST started at 197k, and few small issues you guys mentioned, these are great vehicles!

I've seen Soo many bad reviews on a 2001 Honda Civic. I had balljoints replaced water pump at 75.000 miles. Everything is original on all the parts otherwise. I did have clutch replaced at 93 thousand with hard driving. It is the best car I have ever owned in all my 40 years of driving. I won't part with her no matter what brand new car is out there with Soo much computer junk and expense I don't want.

I've got an '05 coupe Special edition and have yet to experience any of these lol. I bought my car used with me being the 4th owner. Two other known common issues with these Civics are: Oil leaks. The most common oil leak on this gen is by the EGR valve on VTEC engines. It's the rear cam plug. It's like a $7 part and really easy to fix. The o-ring tends to dry out and it'll cause a small oil leak. It's like a 10 minute swap. On some Civics (can't remember if it was the coupes or sedans or even both), the exhaust pipes can actually rattle and bang against the passenger side floor board. It's a weird sound but doesn't damage anything. It sounds scarier when you drive through rain because the thermal shock along with it banging sounds like the car is about to explode. There was a small recall because it didn't affect all Civics. Some people stated replacing the hangers with stiffer ones or bending the pipe near the rear can eliminate it.

I'm getting a used one soon from my local garage. My mother;s 04 Civic has a P0497, also a common one. Vlave by throttle body is probably not working. Basicly a purge flow issue because the solenoid on the valve does not open it. That's what I suspect. I have to set my sights on the 01 on because my CRV got T-boned and totaled out. Sadly no saving it.

Recently got one with 265k only problem on this list I’m having is evap leak, I got a fix for that, clear the code and it’ll be good for a week no check engine light. Lmao, but thankfully I live in Ohio and I don’t care for actually fixing it. Got too many other problems first it was front end work ,brakes and rotors , new tires, than needed a new master cylinder, thinking I’m finally done.... BAM, now I need a new wheel bearing good thing I haven’t got an alignment just yet lol. After that’s done, should be an amazing car besides cam wear, transmission seems to be running pretty good a lot better than my moms 2012 rav4.

I thought these cars based on what I have read have all had major automatic transmission problems. But I don't see anyone talking about that. And also the air conditioning systems I think used to have what they called the black death or something where the system would like explode internally and Scattered debris throughout the lines and all the lines and the whole system had to be replaced. Did anyone else have transmission or AC problems?
