PSA! THIS VIDEO IS WILDLY OUTDATED, Unfortunately, due to COVID, the government giving away too many handouts, and ultimately inflation, getting a good overlander like the vehicles mentioned in this video for $5k is nearly impossible now. The recommendations I made still stand but now you're likely to find them around 50-90% more expensive than they were close to the time this video was shot. Good luck shopping!

The Smod issue on the Frontiers/Xterras (Second gens till 2010) is easy preventable with around 100dlls worth of parts and a few hours of labor, if you get a manual there is no Smod..Finally a realistic budget list, other channels make their "budget" list with 15k-20k examples...

My 2006 was the last model year that had the SMOD issue and it wasn’t even all of them that had it. Had 200k on it with no issues and still okay but I swapped the radiator with an OEM Nissan one. I’m a tech at Nissan so I’m kinda blessed to be able to have parts on hand. You have to watch out for the radiators made by Calsonic from that era. Other than that the trucks are solid and the transmissions from that gen are good to go.

I think your list is pretty right on. This was my lithe for ten years before my budget GX470. I had a ZJ Grand Cherokee with the V8 and AWD, and 280k for 1400. Then a 2000 Range Rover for 4500 + 5k in repairs over 8 years. Still worth it. Now I have a 4x4 Escape and 2003 GX470. I DO miss the Range. But not all the problems. The 2006 + Gen is supposed to be reliable but I didn't want to risk it. Smart run down. I'd have had the Escape over the F-150 as it's a hidden gem. Flat sleeping in back for 2 and 25mpg.

Yep, just gotta make sure that you buy GOOD, quality, somewhat aggressive tires for it, preferably in the Biggest size that your vehicle can handle with the height you have it at, ie. Stock, 2 inch lift, 4 inch lift, etc.. Also, definitely good to have at least a small plastic bin in the rear with emergency gear, such as things to keep you warm, food and water, tool kit(s), jump pack, etc etc..

I'd highly recommend the Nissan Xterra. They have an Off-Road model and a Pro-4x Model that come with factory rear E-Lockers. The aftermarket support isn't nearly what Toyota and Jeep are but its pretty decent. The frontier and Xterra (2nd Gen platform) share all of the same front end components. You can also do a Titan Swap on both. Titan UCA, LCA, Tie Rods, and either the M205 (titan diff) or extended CV axles. Gives you a ton of travel and lift using stock components. The SMOD with the trans is a huge issue but easily fixed. Most of the vehicles effected by that are fixed or repaired already. I'm slightly biased lol but my Xterra is fully armored with front and rear lockers and is a very capable rig.

I am also bias but I’d recommend the Toyota RAV4. It’s just a nice compact crossover that comes in many packages for any user. I currently own a 2018 adventure AWD but I’m looking to get a 2006-2008 v6 AWD. The 2006 had a few problems back in the day but the aftermarket community counters that. Hard to find one for 5k but if you don’t care about mileage and plan on making a dedicated adventure vehicle I’d go for it. Just don’t ever get the 2WD RAV4. The second you let off the gas on a steep incline you’ll stall and the engine will die. Drove my buddies 2017 FWD up a steep dirt hill and killed the engine for a minute. However don’t be alarmed about that. It’s a safety feature to ensure the engine doesn’t break.

You seem like a new to off-roading and overlanding welcome to the community I'm going to give you a tip that first clip you showed when you first started mentioning the list and you said I may be biased and then said the first gen Sequoia. You showed a clip of you driving down a dirt road it seems like you aired down your rear tires pretty low that did not seem necessary I'm sure you've heard that and earring down your tires is extremely helpful when rock climbing and certain terrains of course but a simple dirt road like that you would be fine with your normal tire pressure unless you have onboard air and can fill back up whenever you need I would not have dropped the pressure for a simple road like that I would have saved it until you really needed it

  • @TheFraziers

Actually, airing down for bumpy washboard roads is really helpful too. Check our video of us overlanding at Squaw Peak in Utah. Airing down was absolutely necessary to avoid rattling our teeth out on the trail. And don’t worry, we have an air compressor and know how to use it 😉 I actually worked as a tire technician for a couple of years so I’m pretty sure I know what I’m doing when it comes to tires

The Triton V8 is a horrible engine for reliability. I've owned 4 of them an they all had similar issues. Spitting out plugs, broken 2 piece spark plugs, poor cylinder head design that leaked oil, poor vacuum issues, engine electric and rear differentials. Your other vehicles seem pretty solid but I'd steer clear of any Ford Triton between 98-04.

@@cayman9873 the V10 is a great engine and has very few problems. The Triton 4.7 and 5.4 engines most certainly do have a spark plug issue. Too shallow engagement and thread and horribly designed two piece spark plugs. The first spits plugs out and the second snaps off in the head. Ford has a kit specific for each of these issues.

As others have stated, the 4.6l Ford is far, far from a dependable engine. Exploding ignition coils, spark plugs coming out of the heads, etc. Well known issues throughout the auto mechanic world. Piece of junk engines Ford should be ashamed of.
