As a rosacea sufferer, THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing a video on mineral sunscreens! 🤌🏻 None talks about ‘em these days!
Thank you for this video, Kelly! My favorite sunscreen is the Marini Physical tinted sunscreen. It's a physical sunscreen with a tint (that is perfect if you have a medium skin tone), and it dries down to a matte/semi matte finish. However, it is moisturizing enough that I use it as my daytime moisturizer (over a couple of serums). It's definitely more expensive ($60 for a 2oz bottle), which has made me search for something else that I like as well at a lower price point, but I come back to it over and over because it's just the best in my opinion. I highly recommend it for anyone with a medium skin tone!
Hi Kelly!! Looove your channel!!! My favorite mineral sunscreen would be R&R Sun Serum from Undefined but as always you are making me try new ones. Definitely will try some of these!!
Actually zinc covers all of the UVA range. Titanium dioxide alone does not. Using a sunscreen with just titanium dioxide means you are not getting optimal UVA coverage
@nathanhardham43
Жыл бұрын
Yes true. But titanium dioxide is a much stronger filter, just not as broad spectrum. That’s why a lot of high protection sunscreens use titanium dioxide alongside chemical filters instead of zinc. But yeah a titanium dioxide only sunscreen wouldn’t be broad spectrum. I just hate that titanium gets a bad rep as far as efficacy goes because it’s a very good fikter

I agree. I used the thank you farmer mineral sunscreen which only had titanium dioxide and man did I tan! My shoulders and arms were tanned after one trip to the beach.
Omg just the video I needed!! I had to throw out some very old mineral sunscreens and am browsing for one or two to keep on hand for the days I need mineral. I got a sample of the haruharu mineral and really loved it. I’ve never felt such a silky non pilling non drying mineral spf! Definitely getting that and another one that you recommend!

How does it compare with its chemical version?
My understanding is that zinc oxide has a better UVA range than titanium dioxide. I love the Haruharu, and it’s so affordable. Something about the Avene irritated my skin.
i hope influencers would mention uv booster (e.g. Butyloctyl Salicylate) when reviewing mineral sunscreens

@@Justin_Osugi True. Though Michelle is also not the end all be all of knowledge on cosmetic chemistry. She did a phd in chemistry, and followed a course on cosmetic chemistry, that gives you a good start, but she doesnt have years of working experience as a cosmetic chemist. I hope you get to try one of my all time favorite sunscreen from Snorei. I like their mineral sunscreen for my face. I especially use it when I want to put a little make up. I usually put more matte and light make up on top.

I’m loving the other haraharu wonder black rice moisture airyfit sunscreen it’s so beautiful!!!! Have you tried the new haru haru chemical sunscreen? I’m curious about how it compares.
Kelly, have you already tried the Ultra Violette Lean Screen Mineral Sunscreen or the Naked Sundays Collagen Glow 100% Minéral Sunscreen? Both are tinted but they don't leave any color at all and have a glowy finish, more the Naked Sundays one. So, they are perfect for winter o for drier skins.

Please try the new heatleaf calming mineral sun cream form Goodal!!!
My holy grail mineral sunscreen is the Colorscience Sunforgetable Total Protection Face Shield Classic and the Flex type. Both are amazing and the second one is the Elta MD UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46 xD
Awesome timing for this video -- I was looking for mineral sunscreens last night and was having a hard time finding a good one! One question though -- have you heard/read that zinc oxide has a broader spectrum of UVA protection than titanium dioxide, which might be a reason that titanium alone is not the best protection especially w/r/t UVA? What do you think?
@KellyDriscoll
Жыл бұрын
Zinc has the broadest spectrum of protection of most filters available today and is considered superior to titanium dioxide. But there is more to sunscreen formulation than just the labeled UV filters (this is something Lab Muffin breaks down super well on her channel, not my zone of genius). The La Roche-Posay sunscreen in this video, for example, uses Titanium but other ingredients like Butyloctyl Salicylate help to increase the overall protection and rating of the sunscreen without being classified as a UV filter.

Ugh yes, finding good sunscreen is a quest!
Almost all of these are actually hybrid sunscreens, they contain butyloctyl salicylate high up on the ingredients label and is labeled as an inactive ingredient but it is a chemical sunscreen that is almost identical to octisalate.
One small thing, Avène is pronounced as "ah-vehn" 😊
Omg @kellydriscroll I have a mineral sunscreen I think you will LOVE! The Le Prunier Plumscreen. SPF 31 broad spectrum, it has a natural/satin finish, ZERO cast. It’s tinted but the tint 100% blends into the skin but provides a very slight blur like a good primer. It doesn’t pill and wears great under makeup. The first time I used it I genuinely thought I’d made a mistake and it was actually a chemical sunscreen. But it’s zinc! It’s supperrr moisturizing but doesn’t look shiny or break me out. It also has great antioxidant protection. It is fairy new to me but dare I say it actually competes with my chemical sunscreen favorites! is not water resistant unfortunately, which is why I landed on this video lol. But genuinely, I love it and I think you would too!

Do you recommend any of these for kids? (Not baby but I still prefer mineral)
Thank you ❤
Several brands have multiple shades but they tend to be expensive or unpleasant feeling. Australian gold has 3 shades, neutrogena has a new sunscreen with 4 shades.
The Haru Haru one was in my basket for a while but all the review’s commenting about the white cast put me off. I find that the only one that doesn’t leave a cast on my is the Blueberry one by Bellflower. I tried the etude house soon jung mineral sunscreen and used it up. But it was that thick white sticky typical old school mineral sunscreen. It was a big chore finishing it and had to always wear foundation to cover the cast.
My favorite are the avene spf 50 soleil, La Roche posay spf tinted mineral, and exuviance bb fluid spf 50 which is hard to find
I like Elta MD UV Clear tinted spf 46 sunscreen. Wish it was water resistant though. I know their UV Elements spf 44 tinted one is water resistant, but that tint was too dark on my fair to light skin. Also, felt heavier on me than the spf 46 one. I have normal to dry skin. If anyone is looking, try it out. Expensive though at $45. Wish Korea or Japan would come out with elegant tinted water resistant mineral sunscreens with a wide range of colors and undertones like Kelly mentioned. Love my Asian sunscreens the best! I just also need an all day sunscreen cause reapplying isn’t always convenient and messes up my makeup. 😰
Thanks for the video! I haven’t seen anyone on youtube cover my favorite k-beauty sunscreen though, which is the Aestura Derma UV365 Barrier Hydro Mineral Sunscreen. By far the best mineral sunscreen I’ve ever used, amazing texture that is neither drying nor oily. It’s also direct eye tested too, so it won’t burn your eyed. The Aestura PHA toner is great too. I feel like Kelly would like this brand a lot because most of their products are skin barrier focused, I’d be curious to hear her thoughts.
I have a stylevana order that was placed over two weeks ago and hasn’t even shipped and I’m nearly out of my beauty of Joseon spf. 😬 Can you recommend some thing affordable that I could pick up locally? Perhaps at a target? Thanks Kelly, really appreciate your energy and opinions. And I have been loving the podcast by the way! ❤

Thank you for your recomendations Kelly! By the way, I've been seen some people speaking about the ingredient "Butyloctyl Salicylate". You can find it in sunscreens like the Make Prem u just mentioned, and its a little bit controversial bc it can be considered a "chemical ingredient" and some studies state that "it that may boost the SPF factor by not allowing the skin to redden, but this can be Because SPF factors are determined by HOW red your skin gets after exposure, reducing redness allows for a higher SPF factor WITHOUT a true increase in UV protection". What do you think about this?? I don't know how to feel bc I'm really excited on trying new mineral sunscreen :c
@KellyDriscoll
Жыл бұрын
Not sure about that assessment about skin reddening, my understanding is that Buttyloctyl Salicylate helps to stabilize the overall formula (especially great for unstable filters like Avobenzone) while it could be considered a chemical filter (it's classified as a solvent) it only strikes me as odd when brands market on "chemical free" claims. Otherwise I think it's a fine ingredient, especially if it overall helps the formula.

Lab Muffin (medicinal chemistry PhD and a cosmetic chemist) had a video and a blog post explaining this, really suggest checking it out. She explained that it has a very similar molecular structure to octisalate and the part that is identical is the part responsible for the UV protection provided, so they both function about the same, one just isn't regulated as a sunscreen filter. So I think it's a shame brands are using it to boost their mineral spf as it would also be causing reactions for people who seek mineral specifically because chemical filters irritate their skin.
