    Thank you for this video, Kelly! My favorite sunscreen is the Marini Physical tinted sunscreen. It's a physical sunscreen with a tint (that is perfect if you have a medium skin tone), and it dries down to a matte/semi matte finish. However, it is moisturizing enough that I use it as my daytime moisturizer (over a couple of serums). It's definitely more expensive ($60 for a 2oz bottle), which has made me search for something else that I like as well at a lower price point, but I come back to it over and over because it's just the best in my opinion. I highly recommend it for anyone with a medium skin tone!

    Actually zinc covers all of the UVA range. Titanium dioxide alone does not. Using a sunscreen with just titanium dioxide means you are not getting optimal UVA coverage

    Yes true. But titanium dioxide is a much stronger filter, just not as broad spectrum. That’s why a lot of high protection sunscreens use titanium dioxide alongside chemical filters instead of zinc. But yeah a titanium dioxide only sunscreen wouldn’t be broad spectrum. I just hate that titanium gets a bad rep as far as efficacy goes because it’s a very good fikter

    Awesome timing for this video -- I was looking for mineral sunscreens last night and was having a hard time finding a good one! One question though -- have you heard/read that zinc oxide has a broader spectrum of UVA protection than titanium dioxide, which might be a reason that titanium alone is not the best protection especially w/r/t UVA? What do you think?

  • @KellyDriscoll

    Zinc has the broadest spectrum of protection of most filters available today and is considered superior to titanium dioxide. But there is more to sunscreen formulation than just the labeled UV filters (this is something Lab Muffin breaks down super well on her channel, not my zone of genius). The La Roche-Posay sunscreen in this video, for example, uses Titanium but other ingredients like Butyloctyl Salicylate help to increase the overall protection and rating of the sunscreen without being classified as a UV filter.

It’s tinted but the tint 100% blends into the skin but provides a very slight blur like a good primer. It doesn’t pill and wears great under makeup. The first time I used it I genuinely thought I’d made a mistake and it was actually a chemical sunscreen. But it’s zinc! It’s supperrr moisturizing but doesn’t look shiny or break me out. It also has great antioxidant protection. It is fairy new to me but dare I say it actually competes with my chemical sunscreen favorites! is not water resistant unfortunately, which is why I landed on this video lol. I know their UV Elements spf 44 tinted one is water resistant, but that tint was too dark on my fair to light skin. Also, felt heavier on me than the spf 46 one. I have normal to dry skin. If anyone is looking, try it out. Expensive though at $45. Wish Korea or Japan would come out with elegant tinted water resistant mineral sunscreens with a wide range of colors and undertones like Kelly mentioned. Love my Asian sunscreens the best! Thank you for your recomendations Kelly! By the way, I've been seen some people speaking about the ingredient "Butyloctyl Salicylate". You can find it in sunscreens like the Make Prem u just mentioned, and its a little bit controversial bc it can be considered a "chemical ingredient" and some studies state that "it that may boost the SPF factor by not allowing the skin to redden, but this can be Because SPF factors are determined by HOW red your skin gets after exposure, reducing redness allows for a higher SPF factor WITHOUT a true increase in UV protection". What do you think about this?? I don't know how to feel bc I'm really excited on trying new mineral sunscreen :c

  • @KellyDriscoll

    @KellyDriscoll

    Жыл бұрын

    Not sure about that assessment about skin reddening, my understanding is that Buttyloctyl Salicylate helps to stabilize the overall formula (especially great for unstable filters like Avobenzone) while it could be considered a chemical filter (it's classified as a solvent) it only strikes me as odd when brands market on "chemical free" claims. Otherwise I think it's a fine ingredient, especially if it overall helps the formula.

    Lab Muffin (medicinal chemistry PhD and a cosmetic chemist) had a video and a blog post explaining this, really suggest checking it out. She explained that it has a very similar molecular structure to octisalate and the part that is identical is the part responsible for the UV protection provided, so they both function about the same, one just isn't regulated as a sunscreen filter. So I think it's a shame brands are using it to boost their mineral spf as it would also be causing reactions for people who seek mineral specifically because chemical filters irritate their skin.
