Great review as always. I took out my notepad I keep all my research in for gear, paused this at all the key points and made detailed notes. I love your reviews, they do a lot of good for us. The close up shots help too for determining things like the exact model number if you need to see it again or the key issue for some -- the reversible pocket clip issue which is not discussed always, but you do, nice. The other great thing about this video -- is you have the 2nd set of 5 lights at the beginning where you do a quick overview on also and then qualify the video-criteria --- I thought that was super. Sharing this video now. Thanks Ben - always good reviews and facts.

Great video, love the AAA's. I've been using Eagtac D25AAA for the last few months, love it! The website spec is for a regular AAA but states that it accepts 10440 which bumps up the lumens to 250+. Its slightly smaller than the Ti3 with a beautiful beam.

I’ve had an olight I3e for about a year and use it every day. I like the way the switch is a simple twist on/off and no scrolling through functions just to quickly light something. I don’t know if it’s an exaggeration but the makers say it puts out 90 lumens - it is very bright. I just found out that they now sell a pocket clip off another model but which fits perfectly.

Got the streamlight in my hiking bag. Last time I went on a hike had to run down the mountain in the dark and the 35 lumin streamlight got the job done great. I'm sure having the ability to have brighter settings is a plus but I feel the 35 lumin was the perfect amount of light I needed that would also keep a decent run time. I also like how the dual direction clip will work on a hat without having to move it.

My personal favorite key chain LEDs: 1) Photon - can't get much smaller or lighter. Perfect for when you need to illuminate a close area, like the lock to your front door or the path there to. Some AAAs have a low setting lower than the Photon. Plus it's available in various color LEDs. 2) Fenix E05 previous or current version. Yes, it's a twisty, but so much smaller than its other competitors with a clip. If it's on a key chain, I don't need or want a clip. For pocket carry, I'm going to step up to an AA.

Yeah, the Tool's switch is surprisingly tough - like the light as a whole, it's something you'd expect out of a full-size torch. It just takes some getting used to, though, and after 4 days of use I can say mine is very good: hard enough to not press and click by accident, and it's super responsive to half-presses to change modes.

That Olight you have in the video, the i3S-CU comes in bare brass and titanium gold and is far different than the i3S models and not 80lm. The CU is 180lm on high mode for 3 minutes which is kind of silly and would make me not be able to use that mode for daily use so I'd be forced to use the medium 20lm mode all the time which is too dim. The regular i3S on high is 80 lumen for 35 minutes. I have the i3S and with an eneloop on high mode I get about 50 minutes. Far more useful to me. I am about to buy that Granvela K18 you reviewed. Now that is pocket power and better run time in high mode! I couldn't agree more with the K18 beam pattern for a little pocket light. Seems so good for a mini head. If you unscrew the head can you lock the battery out so it won't turn on in your pocket? If so this K18 is perfect for pocket carry.

I had the Fenix but didn't really like it and ultimately gave it away. The low wasn't low enough and the three modes very quickly became almost indistinguishable from one another. the tint also sucked on mine and the pocket clip was junk. Even after I bent it to hug the body tighter. I did like the clicky though. For AAA NIMH, I like the Prometheus beta. Great tint and mode spacing in a pretty little package. I have two, a nickel plated and a titanium one. I use them with the pocket clip you can get. They serve as my backup lights and for that reason, I actually like the twisty..for the sake of reliability. I carry the ti one daily and the other lives at my work as an emergency light.

I got the Lumintop AAA based on your review a couple of months back, and it sure is great light. So thanks for introducing it. The only "flaw" is that the dimmest setting is just a bit too dim for lighting the path in front of me on night hikes, so I have no use for it. I´d like to go as dim as possible for low battery consumption. That´s just my opinion and nevertheless I think it´s a great little light!

Well, it's not a mode designed for any distance beyond "arms reach in an enclosed environment". I can say that it's easily the best mode to read your map with when hiking on starlight alone. Try it if you can, it's absolutely amazing. Otherwise, brother, the Fenix LD02 will make you a happy hiker!

Good review, but the specs you gave for the UltraTac K18 are when using a 10440 lithium-ion cell, not alkaline AAA. Not everyone has those and you need a good charger. It gives 370 lumens with lithium, and only 110 lumens with alkaline, which will quickly dim after only 15-20 minutes because alkaline cells are pretty terrible compared to other options. Also they love to leak and corrode battery contacts or worse. Primary lithium cells (1.7V disposable) would be slightly brighter than alkaline and give better runtimes too. NiMH will also give better runtimes than alkaline on medium and high, but won't be brighter. My bad, you did sort of explain that after I typed. But I'll leave it if it helps clarify for others. Not all lights can use Lithium ion, especially for more than a few minutes because they get very hot on high, and may shorten life.

The Thrunite Ti5 single aaa rear click is also pretty nice, has strobe, and an ultra low firefly mode like the other Thrunite aaa lights have - its great in a dark room or tent, plenty to see whats going on and get around without messing up your night vision. Fenix also has the E05, I have the stainless steel bodied one - its built like a tank, but as far as stainless steel bodied lights, which are way more durable than aluminum, I am digging the Thrunite TiS, which is the same price as the black Thrunite Ti3 - its $20. In fact, if I had to choose just one - it would be the Thrunite TiS, for the materials, color rendering, the firefly mode - but for budget minded, I would look at the others I mentioned previously. The UltraTac looks cool, its the one I don't have you showed that looks good, not sure how durable that switch is.

Singfire 348, $5, $10 with a custom spec'd Nichia led via budgetlightforum thru Gearbest - I have both. Rear tail switch, ultra clean design. Also, the new Olight i3E for $10 is solid, and ultra light in weight, single of output 90-120 lumens depending on the version (some may like the single fuction, some may not, but when you think of a keychain light, as opposed to an EDC the single function is ok, I always think of it also as an emergency defensive blinding tool - so you don't want be going thru different modes in this case - imagine the dark garage or parking lot etc.....I think its the best overall value for a quality keychain light that actually goes on the keys - its smaller than all of the ones you showed, including the other Olight i3S, I have most of the lights you showed on the vid, including some others not shown. Again - Budget/ value pocket aaa light - Singfire 348 for $5; Ultra compact keychain aaa light - Olight i3E for $10.

The SingFire 348 is basic...but for $5 to $6......to me its about stacking gear, stacking kits - 5-$5 lights is better than one $25 light - they are all made in China, the circuitry is the main thing that fails - and most of them use the same Cree hardware....I am deep as fuck in most things and have been for 20 years before the term prepper was even around, this is the flashlight golden age, and it wont last with some of these deals due to the economics and politics. Time to stack, kit up brooooo's. Time is mega short.

+Living Survival I was going to get that single mode I3E you showed at the start of the video, but I couldn't see that short run time being practical so I never got one. I use my AAA flashlight as a pocket light for working on HVAC and in tight areas so the I3S is optimum for me usually on medium mode so I get 5-6 hours run time. I actually have many AAA flashlights that I've tried over the years. I have that fenix E01 and the new stainless steel version of the E05 with 3 modes. Thrunite Ti3, an Orasm single mode AAA and Maglite solitaire LED. Out of all the best for pratical use is the i3S EOS for me. If I had a job in security or anything slightly tactical I would lean toward the Thrunite Ti3 it the 162lumen Thrinite Ti since they start in firefly mode. I also have the CooYoo on my keychain! That's the coolest mini flashlight. To bad mine is black and its a cheap anodization that wears off fast. I ordered the stainless steel version and gear best sent me the black one. I was so pissed about that and they were a pain in the rear about exchanging it so I still have the black one. BOO

The mode placement is foolish though. They offer a 0.5lm low, but stash it in between medium and high. For that kind of light, there isn't much reason for M-L-H. L-M-H is ideal for the kind of light.

  • @kleinbottled79

+Motorcycling Adventures Can confirm 180 lumen on the i3s-cu, seems like an accurate rating compared to a few other lights I own. Worth noting, it throttles back to ~90 lumens after 3 min due to heat. (clearly noted in the documentation; a common 'feature' and other makers aren't always so forthright about it) 10 hours at 20 lumens is what really matters to me. I got the brass finished one, and it's a very nice looking object, especially for a flashlight. Agree with sticktodrum 100% about the mode order. Only gripe though. Seriously cool looking, bright and efficient with the XP-L emitter for 25 bones. This is the light that caused me to binge buy 3 other XP-L emitter torches of different sizes. The brightness and efficiency of these lights can be fairly described as 'Unreasonably Awesome.'

As an edc it wont turn on in your pocket. When I first started camping I didn’t even own a flashlight, not fun but also not a necessity I learned. As for the “Almighty Strobe”, a good fist to the face or strike of the blade will suffice, but just try to put some distance between you and the threat haha.

Has anyone ever needed a strobe for anything important anywhere anytime for any reason EVER? I seriously doubt disorienting an attacker with a flashlight strobe has ever been documented... Look honey, there's a nut job over there. Let me go get my strobe flashlight to disorient him. Yeah, right! Cops never use the strobe feature to disorient, and they purposefully go in harms way all the time. Jus sayin.

  • @livingsurvival

  • @guitartec

    @guitartec

Not to beat a dead horse, but I think you'd partially agree with this, but in real life, the chances you'd either have the flashlight in hand or even think to use the strobe feature when you're truly confronted by a nut job is retardedly slim. Throwing the flashlight at them is more likely if they come at you. That's why I love my Lumintop Tool (thanks to you)...no BS, just straight ahead functionality. I gave my EC4S a 4 star Amazon review b/c I feel it's more of a novilty. The beacon is the only special feature that makes good sense to me if people are looking for you. That's b/c the batteries last about a billion years on that function. Can you imaging standing on the highway with a flat tire and pointing the blinding sos at cars driving by as they give you the finger for blinding them, or thinking the sos would convey a message to a millennial who has no clue what morse code is. I would rather see them keep the special effects and put trasers is the handle or switch or have a place for a hide-a-key or something useful.

"STROBE" SURVEY.... How many of you carry a flashlight where you have purposefully used its strobe or SOS function in a very real live situation where someone's life was at stake or you needed immediate help. The aim here is to find out if anyone ever has been truly saved or rescued totally due to either of these two specific special functions, and where you strongly believe or have proof its regular beam would not have brought the same results? Anything but truthful first-hand stories will be deleted from this thread. If you don't like this survey, simply do not participate. It's JUST a survey. Lying is punishable by lethal fast strobe in a recliner like the Van Gelder episode on original Star Trek. I want to be corrected on my thinking that these two functions are purely marketing only. And yes, I am a flashoholic and love collecting every light I can get my hands on.

Ben, I totally agree with that. My EC4S beacon is awesome, and THAT is something I have used, but not in a life saving / threatening sitch. I was on a small boat at night on Cape Cod and couldn't find my buddy's dock. Spotters couldn't see us to direct us in due to light fog, but they could see my EC4S beacon! It lit the entire marina up! I'm sure we would have made it even if I only had my aluminum Lumintop tool. Speaking of the Tool, I just received my copper Lumintop Tool today... (no strobe function- yay!). Looks awesome! Guess Ti is next.
