Crabs will eat anything. It is always important to give them plenty of food, because they will and can eat each other.

My son picked out two hermit crabs at the beach and I really wish I'd researched them ahead of time, they came with a small plastic tank with about an inch of sand. I just bought some liquid to make salt water and we're shopping for a 10 gallon tank with a lid and will be purchasing a heat mat along with sand and eco earth so they can burrow. I also started feeding them other foods besides the hermit powder food. We will also be purchasing/making some climbing decorations. Thanks for your informative videos, we've learned a lot in a few days.

I keep 156 hermit crabs and are all thriving! They are fed a good meal that they need. They live in a very wide area with ground deep enough to hide in.

I'm 35 and my whole life I thought of Crabs as throw away pets and while on vacation we picked one up and I love him since I have bought several and haven't had much luck but I have been going all commercial with it. you are awesome. I LOVE the way you advocate for hermit crabs. I have 7, their names are Golliath, Pitter, Daubby, Itty Bitty, Fraidy Cat, Pip Squeak and I haven't a name for the 7th one yet, as it's been molting and I haven't really observed it's behavior too much. I just got my son a hermit crab yesterday! I learned so much! we are headed to get it some friends and a tank today. the pet shop didn’t give us any of this information.

I love both my hermit crabs and I wish I could buy some stuff for them to climb on, but since I don't get an allowance for doing chores or anything and I'm too young to be able to have a job I can't get them anything but the coconut shell my sister gave them, and my parents won't buy them stuff, so even though I always help the neighbors with their lawns and stuff I still feel like my hermit crabs aren't happy

When I was a kid everytime we go to the beach I always try to find some small hermit crabs and put in a bottle(i dont close the lid dw). I only stop collecting when the bottle is full. And when it's full I set them free in one place :D

I have 2 hermit crabs (both are males) and I just got them in march so this helped alot!

Hi, I 💖LOVE💖 your channel. I have a question. All 3 of my hermit crabs have been down under the eco earth for about 3 weeks now, maybe longer. Since going under though, I've noticed some tiny bugs in the tank! EEEEEEEK!!! NEVER seen them before and have had 2 of them for over a year. Recently acquired a 3rd crab from Petco and after researching, I believe the bugs to be mites. 😱 I don't know what to do!!! If I disturb my crabs during molting it may kill them, but if I leave them alone the mites will probably kill them!!! PLEASE ADVISE. I JUST DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO and I love my crabs so very much. I don't want to lose them. What are my options. Sincere Thanks, Bethann

Okay, don't panic! I think you should let the crabs finish molting. After that you can do a deep clean and either bake, boil, or throw away everything in the tank. My thought is the crabs have made it through many molts without our help and they should be able to pull through this. Good luck!

A hermit crab is my first pet (accept for some ants) but I did loads of research about them

I was at a beach area and I bought 6 crabs from a souvenir shop. This video helped a lot! I hope I can give my crabs a better home than the souvenir shops care.

Hey Hannah! I know this post was from a while ago but I was just wondering if the hermit crabs had any bad odor on the car ride home? I have about a 12 hour drive and I didn’t want to get them if they smelled bad on the ride. Thanks!

An actual question. Where can I find a shell that has a 1.5-2 inch shell opening? I have a huge one that is waiting to grow into a larger shell, and they dont want to go into the other two shells that I have for him. What should I do?

You can find some on Etsy, but I am also having difficulty finding shells that include only that variety and not the small ones, which I won't be able to use at all. I see many are in packs that also include the small sizes, I wish there were that only included the larger ones.

I do bath mine almost every day; she appears to be happy with that 😃.

I enjoy your hermit crab videos ,I just bought 3 before ik how their treated .but I subscribed and I enjoy your hermit crab videos (don’t support the hermit crab industry) look up how their treated before they end up in pet stores look up peta investigations😫breaks my heart because the three I have are so sweet and love their new home.but they were put under so much stress before they came to pet stores or gift shops and u buying them supports the owners who sell them for profit ik one person cant change the way there treated but spread the word to others .they also get stressed very easily their not very great pets for children. There not for u to pick up everyday ,and those painted shells irritate their skin and flake.lots of care needs to be put into them .you can’t just throw them in the small pet cages that they give you , and their temperature needs to be humid.so much care for these innocent creatures they should be left alone

I know, it’s horrible how they are treated! I hate how society views some creatures as more valuable than others (like dogs are better that hermit crabs) They just see them as cheap, throwaway, items!😡 A good way to still own crabs without supporting the industry is to rescue them from Craigslist. People are ALWAYS getting rid of them and usually you end up saving them from horrible conditions.

I think because Hermie's are so misunderstood and underappreciated by many, they are considered "throw away pets". A lot of people overlook the English Budgerigar (parakeets) in pet shops as just cheap, stupid pets also. People don't even know Budgies are a type of parrot! Just because an animal does not adhere to a person's idea of exciting, does not mean that they don't have great qualities and friendship to offer! We very recently welcomed a hermit crab into our home, and I'm running all over the place trying to keep adding things to his habitat so he can be happy. For now he is in a 10 gallon tank, but we have plans to invest in a 20 or 40 gallon enclosure when I (mom) can find a better habitat. Eventually we may end up adopting rescue hermie buddies so he can have friends!

Some people handle their crabs and others don't. While I don't think it is great to handle them and it probably does cause some stress, you can totally do it for short periods of time. I personally don't enjoy handling my crabs, otherwise I probably would.

Whenever I get hermit crabs they just kill each other and rip each others legs off

First time i had a hermit crab when i was a kid, i put it on my aquarium and they're drown lol

Why do people bathe a hermit crab? It’s a hermit crab, it’s like trying to bathe well a hermit crab, why is there a need to bathe them at all except if you just got them from a pet store or something

Thank you for posting your video I had a couple of critters along time ago. They unfortunately didn't last very long. i guess because we didn't take very good care of them . No climbing possibilities didn't know how to set up a good habitat for them. didn't know what to feed them usually shredded coconut. I had two of them Benji he/she was the explorer. And Bashful he /she would tuck into his/her shell whenever we walked into the room. It took a couple of minutes to coax him/her out of his/her shell. What would be the ideal habitate for a land hermit crab? How many crabs should I get I'm thinking more than two. Maybe 4,6. How warm should I have their habitate be. I kind of like my place cool. so maybe a heat lamp may be necessary . do they sell Hermit crabs at the pet store? I bought Benji & Bashful Through mail order. The came to us in a little box (No wonder Bashful had issues). I want to try again any advise you could give me would be much appreciated. Thanks. @@davidurban6813 I have a video on boardwalk hermit crab abuse where I go more in depth, but to sum it up I think that to an extent they are right. Although it is supporting the abuse, 1 individual, refusing to buy hermit crabs will not make a change. I think education is key. Educating owners and pet stores is what will really bring about a change. At this point, I only take in crabs needing rescue or rehoming.

they live in colonies in the wild, so if you can't afford a 10gallon (at least!) maybe wait until you can.

People call hermit crabs throwaway pets :( But I have a jungle/ beach like crabitat: home of 3 hermit crabs their names are Crusty, Sebastian, and Cruella.

They eat natural / unprocessed fruit, veggies, grains, and meat.

I got one from the pet store that died in 3 days … and the store said that it was because we had them with the ones that we found in the bay .. is that true ? Like salt water vs fresh water .. pet Stire said bath and give them bottled water to drink

Ocean crabs need to stay in the water. Land hermit crabs will drown if they stay in water for too long.

@@spookyspookster8429 Make sure the shells are the right size or slightly larger. Also be sure you have sufficient food and water available to him at all times. Other than that, just be patient and hope for the best...

Yes and no. A land hermit crab, like the ones in my videos will survive. In fact, all land hermit crabs are wild caught. A marine hermit crab on the other hand, will most likely die if taken out of the wild.

Hermit crabs actually do live at the beach I’ve seen them exactly where do they get their shells at the beach what does it look like but they don’t go in the water though they’re like near the palm trees at the beach or near rocks and crevices that’s where hermit crabs live not on the forest anything they live on the beach is not in the water

Offer it some safe shells to move in to. Make sure they're the right size. I got a bunch of natural turbo shells from Michael's craft store for like $3. Good luck.

If land hermit crabs seem like to much work for you just keep aquatic hermits you just have to learn about saltwater aquariums
