Update! SO much better! I have been doing these exercises and trying to walk on my whole foot. At first the toe bending was painful. I realized how tight those structures in my feet were. My third toe hurt the most during the stretch, but my 2nd toe is the hammer toe. Now my 2nd toe is almost completely flat, and is flexible-not rigid any more. The toe stretches feel good. Thanks so much!

Bob, you're a Godsend to me right now...thank you for this one! I have a hammer toe right foot started a month or two ago. My ortho surgeon didn't mention any exercises for them so you're super helpful! Just to see someone else's toe in this position is comforting as well as the great information to assist. God bless you.

Thanks Bob and Brad. 37 year old hiker with hammer toes checking in. The way my toes land caused pretty bad metatarsalgia and I've had to give up hiking and switch jobs. Nice to find these stretches and thank you for demonstrating them. Hoping they will help to straighten out the toes and avoid surgery.

The way shoes are made causes the disfigurement and needs to be changed to see the correct muscles of the foot strengthen. Many shoes have arch support, toe spring, round toes, and elevated heels. Who's feet are round? I recommend looking at brands like Altra, Topo, Xero, and Vivobarefoot. There are many more but these are my favorites. Myofascial release to the extensors in the anterior lower leg is critical. Good luck with your journey, I did mine 5 years ago after a broken foot.

Reason I lift toes up when standing is to protect my arthritic knees, if that helps. I didn't realize I was doing this so thanks for pointing it out.Now I can focus on strengthening these areas!

I found balancing on the affected foot for as long as possible helpful. I’m trying to bring that second metatarsal, phalanx down to better alignment. I also heard of standing with your toes on the edge of a step. Also, if you are walking for exercise, don’t stop. I didn’t realize how much it was doing for me. I stopped for a while, the symptoms of the hammertoe came back. It was hard to get going again.

Guys, I have them too. Here's what my Dr said; I saw Dr 1-7-2021. Bunions on both feet, Right foot, 2nd toe hammered. Dr recommended toe separator and PowerStep arch support, which I did. Still hurts, will try the exercise program. Thank You Guys are The Greatest! My Opinion.

Interesting I have noticed looking down it my right second toe looked like it was angled opposite than the 2nd on my left foot, but only this weekend noticed the second joint was stuck where it won't let that toe flatten out more than 90 degrees. I'll have to try these and some more recent hammer toe suggestions you have and see if this is the latest joint problem you guys help me fix! And I'll have to remind my friends and family to check you guys out for their aches and pains!

I was just going to look for your videos about hammer toes ...my Mom had them too. I wonder if a cause are shoes and especially sandals and shoes that "stay on" because you have to point /flex your toes up as you take each step to keep them from coming off. I hope you make more videos about this subject. Thanks again.

Bob, have your toes improved now that it is 2 years ago? I’m just seeing this video. And the one toe does rub up on the top of my shoe. I didn’t realize this was really related to plantar fasciitis too. Thx for all the great info. ❤

I’ve had this problem for a long time and I’ve only found it getting better once I made the switch to flat wide toed shoes AND forefoot walking. I think this is because the shoes give the toes the space and stretching they need to splay and the fore foot walking allows my claves to properly activate to help balance everything out. It’s not a simple switch either I’ve been doing it for a couple years now and I’m still not 100% used to it.

Hello, Breaststroker here, I wanted to ask whether breaststroke is bad for your knees lifespan. Because we often go through a lot of flexibility exercise that put our knees in extreme angles. We also do a lot of a very tight version of the W sit where the ankles are touching the gluteals I really want to here your opinion on this!

I was pleasantly surprised to see this video since I have hammer toes. A little hard for me to do my left foot, since I have not only had knee replacement but also my left ankle had triple compound fractures so was put back together with a plate and 13 screws. Will have to figure out how to get some stretching done in spite of the metal. Any suggestions?

arielmel0518 I wonder if you could use a towel and pull your toes and feet. I would start gently, as in Yoga. After time the stretch increases as the muscles and tendons loosen up. I hope this helps.

Thanks so much Bob! A chiropractor and podiatrist later, I come across physiotherapists who can actually explain what's happening to my toe. I pieced together what you said, before seeing your vid, but it's great to hear smart people echo me. Lol. I appreciate the exercise tips. I've been grabbing towels and a hacky sac. Oh. My podiatrist told me to buy Hoka runners (he sneered at my barefoot shoes). I bought a pair, tried them on, now they sit on the box. I'm thinking of returning them, because the toe flips up.

I avoided the surgeries on both feet! I called BS when the doctor said that there was not care for me. Instead I made both feet, all my toes stronger and calves stronger. You can do it! It'll be hard work but it's worth it people! I even avoided back surgery. Now my spine is better than ever.
