    I'm so excited to see your top 5 scenes. And I can't wait for you to start season 2, I think you'll love it a lot. I think something to keep in mind with Hinata's maturity as a volleyball player being behind the others is that Hinata really is behind the others. Remember in middle school he didn't have a volleyball team or coach or even adviser, Hinata spent the whole 3 years basically on his own trying to get teammates and having his friends (a soccer player and tennis player) casually play with him whenever they had time. Episode one is literally the first time he managed to get enough members(including his two friends helping to fill the numbers) to enter a tournament in his whole middle school career. And it's still just literally been only months since he's gotten to play volleyball properly.

    Hey Victoria, for me the moments of Asahi burning out actually relates more to art then volleyball (even though I have experience playing I'm a professional animator). I think if you're passionate about something, moments of Haikyuu willl resonate with you. Alot of reactors I watched were basketball players or gamers and they all found moments where they can relate.

    37:02 So glad Coach Donny mentioned the music as it's one of my favourite aspects about the show! Here's a cool story about the composer, Yuki Hayashi. He never had any formal musical training and actually started out as a Rhythmic Gymnast but got interested in the the music selection they'd use for their routines. He'd eventually go on to learn more about composing joined a music label working with prolific composers in the anime industry after he graduated. Today, a lot of his work is used in sports anime and I think his background in sports really helps capture the emotion and atmosphere in his compositions and enhances the scenes they're used in so much.

  • @ca-zl3qk

    @ca-zl3qk

    Yuki Hayashi is a god. I love how the main theme is continuously evolving in each season, from Haikyuu!! and Settlement in S1, Above in S2, Battle of Concepts in S3, to The Monsters' Ball in S4. The way Coach says how a composer has to build up the starting of a piece before getting to the best parts of music perfectly encapsulates what Hayashi has been doing for the last four seasons - the fast paced music in the Monsters' Ball is one of the reasons why the final rally in S4 is my favorite.

    I love how Ukai and Takeda just sit there watching the kiddos with a slight smile on their lips and not eating (I would definitely have eaten :) ). They have been through their own hurdles and know how the kiddos are feeling, so they know they will get stronger because of this defeat. And when Hinata takes the first bite, that is when he realises he was hungry, he was not thinking of it, only of the defeat, but this reminds him that life moves on, you need to fulfil one of the most basic human needs and this pulls you back to the bitter reality of the situation.

    15:40 I haven't had experience with burnout in volleyball, but I think many of us have had experience with burnout in something we loved and were passionate about. I went to undergrad on a piano scholarship, but 6-8 hours of practice a day can be soul-draining, and then you play a piece for a masterclass and a first-year student comes up to you and says they were moved, and it's honestly like the sky opens up. Asahi isn't the character I relate to most (I'm a Suga / Takeda-sensei / [S4-character] person), but that scene was beautiful for me, too.

    Thanks coach Donny for understanding introverts :') As an introvert, through my childhood a lot of teachers or authority figures always made me feel like I had to be more extroverted or that being extroverted was the right "attitude" to have and I always thought there was something wrong with me because I couldn't be like that. It wasn't until I was an adult that I learned what an introvert was and understood that there was nothing wrong with me, I just processed things different. So its great to see that coach Donny understands this in his students.

In that moment before you started discussing the crying scene you so casually talked about your mental situation, with Coach Donny. I wish I could do that, I wish I had someone I could discuss stuff like that with. My parents generally encourage me to supress whatever I might be feeling and they would never discuss mental health. To see you discuss something like that so casually has reawakened an old pain, but has greatly increased just how much I admire and appreciate you. Anyway that was really personal. I am gonna go hide.

    I really like this anime bc of the characters' growth. I've been practicing judo for almost 14 years now and this show reminds me how much life lessons sports gave me (and still gives me), how much it made me grow as a person. I'm so happy Haikyuu exists bc i've never seen any other show before, that transmits that well how sports confronts you to life. Indeed, every lesson the characters learn can be transferred into daily life, such as, losing is part of the game, what makes the difference between those who go on and those who get stuck is how you let it affect you, the ability of telling yourself that something was wrong, so you have to work to be better. There would be so much other things to say but it'll be too long and I'm struggling to write in english with my french keyboard and I think everyone can relate to this so it's not necessary to tell more 😅

    As a person who has never played any sports but loves sports animes I would say the main draw of the shows is the emotional side. And the fact that all of these lessons that they go through applies to life in general. And as someone who also suffers from mental illness (depression/anxiety) I think I am really drawn to the relationships, the inspirational moments and just how entertaining it is. I love animes in general for the fact that they can make pretty much any subject interesting/funny. Chihayafuru, Midori no Hibi, Cells at Work....? And as a person with a very high EQ/very empathetic it is so satisfying to watch these different characters and see the little touches animators add to really highlight someone's emotional state or show the dynamic between people without using words. I would say Haikyuu gives me the same feels that shows like Fruits Basket, Orange or even Naruto/Shippuden does. And i makes me feel like the scene in Inside Out where Joy realizes that without sadness there can be no joy. It makes me feel so uplifted to see these characters I care about lift each other up and I'm so thankful for the people in my life that do that for me. I can imagine that for someone who doesn't have that it is reassuring to know those kinds of relationship are possible and out there. And what kind of people you want to choose to have in your life. It's literally one of the best animes out there and I never get tired of watching it over and over. Loved your video as always Victoria!

    Victoria, I know you wondered about how people who have never played volleyball approached some of these scenes so I though I'd give my two sense as someone who has never played volleyball and until watching Haikyu didn't even watch the sport. So I don't play volleyball and have no experience with the sport, but I am an athlete and a varsity athlete in a sport for a very competitive school. I'm an equestrian, meaning I ride horses and I'm on my school's varsity riding team, so when I watch Haikyu and all of those really emotional moments, I can still relate to them because I've experienced them, just with my team, my horse, and my sport. When players make breakthroughs and clear mental hurdles, like Asahi breaking through the iron wall, I think of times I've conquered my own anxieties and mental hurdles during horse shows and come out on top, smiling all the way. Hinata's performance anxiety is something I relate as well because there was a period of time (roughly three years so all of high school) where horse showing and competing made me so nervous that I would cry the day before, the day of, and the day after a show. I still loved riding and so I still showed because I refused to just give up and I knew I needed to break through, but it was hard for awhile. Every now and then I still slip back into that anxious mess I was, but I have my team, my family, my trainers, and of course my horse, all supporting me. Sorry that was a lot, but I just wanted to share a bit of my story. Those highs and lows shown in the show, I think anyone who's ever played or plays a sport they really love has had similar experiences, even if they weren't playing volleyball.

    The latter half of this conversation is getting me recalling senior year of high school for me. My team finished off the season with a record of something like 2-9-6. Upon many reflections on how mentally/emotionally challenging of a season it was for me, I’ve come to realize so many ways in which I can strive to be team-player. I don’t know if I’d appreciate facing a similar experience in the future… but I can’t deny that it’s contributed greatly to my personal and professional development. I appreciate you both, Victoria and Donny, taking the time to connect here and making this conversation publicly accessible; I appreciate this opportunity to reflect!

    Hey Vic, you wondered about how people who watch Haikyuu but don't play volleyball like me feel about some scenes like the one with Asahi losing his confidence in volleyball, well I think a lot of us can relate to it in our own ways! :) Like me, I don't play volleyball but I relate to that scene with Asahi because I had an experience last year (not related to volleyball) that totally shook my confidence and might've really traumatized me a little bit lol (it's like how Asahi got so shaken by being blocked so many times in his last tournament), and I spent so many weeks thinking about it and questioning my abilities but then those really inspiring, lesson-packed scenes in Haikyuu really helped me build my confidence back little by little. Everytime I see some characters in the show make a mistake, lose, or go through rough times and they pick themselves back up or not give up, or their friends/teammates/people around them give them the words they needed to hear to keep going, it gives me a fresh perspective and really helps me keep a growth mindset. Scenes like those remind me that I can totally learn from my mistakes and allow myself to grow from those mistakes. I realized now that my little blunder back then wasn't the end of the world lol, I just needed to practice a bit more and not be afraid to ask help from other people so I could get it right the next time around! It's like how the teams here continue to practice and practice even after a loss, so they could do better in the next tournament. 😊💗 Great selection of favorite moments btw!

    Thank you so much Victoria and Donny, great video, great collab! I would definitely like to watch your top 5 moments after season 2 :) I have been in a latin formation dancing team (8 couples are dancing a 6 minute choreography, which includes Samba, ChaChaCha, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive, the couples have to be as synchron as possible) for 13 years and it was top priority for me - I was in every of the 3 to 4 trainings a week and there were at least 4 tournaments a year. The last year of the 13 was no fun anymore, just work, dance, sleep, repeat, it was so stressfull and I had to drag myself to training. I got so much tension in my back on one training day, that I could not move anymore - I had to pause for 7 weeks and got physical therapy. After the season I quit dancing, that was 6 years ago. I tried some other things, and as I was drawn to volleyball every since school I began playing beach volleyball once a week with friends (at least I did before the pandemic and I hope we can play again soon). Oh, and I started dancing again 3 years ago - 1 to 2 trainings a week with a cool young team. Beachvolleyball AND dancing makes me really happy. :) As for my favorite scene of season 1 - I cannot decide. I laugh at every funny scene, I nearly cry in every emotional scene, I love each and every character so much and they all have their special moments. Asahi calling the toss from "Sugaaaa" is really special though. If I had to pick one from your 5 best moments, Vic, then I think it would be Kageyama being so furious with Hinata and not blowing up but instead "cheering" Hinata up (in his way) :D

    I love these wrap-up videos, even if it is killing me to wait for reactions to certain players or scenes. You asked how non-volleyball people relate to Haikyu. I have never really played VB. In fact, I would almost say I broader line hated it before Haikyu. I just remember in Elementary school when the PE teacher would spend the period on volleyball, no one ever took the time to explain anything to me. Most everyone else, especially a lot of the other girls, jad siblings who had played and had been watching and learning the game their whole lives. I have two older brothers, but they never even thought about playing VB. So I knew nothing, like I literally didn't even know where the boundary lines were or the positions, and every time I made a mistake everyone else would just get upset and say things like "stop messing" up or "didn't you hear the call" or " I said out why did hit it" (when two minutes earlier that same person got mad at me for not going after the ball) and not actually explain the game. Plus it didn't help that as a kid I had terrible hand-eye coordination. I couldn't catch a ball until middle-school let alone send a ball anywhere near a specific spot with just a touch. So, I fell in love with the show because it explained everything very clearly without making me feel stupid for not knowing it. And I somewhat could relate to Hinata, no natural talent, though I am not nearly as athletic. And as far as relating to the scenes, I might not be able to relate to the volleyball context, but I relate to the emotion. I may never have lost a game, but I know the feeling of failure after working my butt off. I may have never had my hit completely blocked in a game, but I've felt the loss of confidence after something goes wrong. And I know the unending joy of just being able to do my sport, and the burn out of doing it so long and hard. Haikyu does such a perfect job of creating the emotion in the viewer that it doesn't matter that I've never played a day of volleyball in my life, I can still relate on a personal level to the characters emotions. I don't know if this is true for everyone, but it's my personal experience.
