Top 5 FAST WAGONS: Part 1 | ReDriven

In our humble opinion, in the world of cars, there’s not much cooler than a fast wagon. Supercars and even sports can be a bit too shouty and look at me,
Hot hatches are awesome but a few can look a bit boy racer. We're looking at you, Civic Type R...
A fast sedan is great but a wagon is more practical and because it feels like performance SUVs are replacing fast wagons, a fast wagon is becoming more exclusive, and therefore cooler. But, what are the best fast wagons?
Let us know what you think in the comments below and don't forget to subscribe!

At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.

Being an owner of a factory blue r36 wagon, i must say i dont regret the 6 month search for the right one, Though it was either the r36 or the stagea. Glad i chose the r36, pay. Little more for one Well maintained and you’re set :)

You better have a VE SS wagon in part 2 Love the videos guys, keep it up
I have a '15 Golf Sportwagon SE TSI, first new car and still love it! The performance, economy and utility are amazing for a 27k car. 170hp/200 torque. Have gotten 39 mpg on road trip! Mods: ClearBra and professional tint, yellow DRL/Hi Beams, amber rear turn bulbs. The car doesn't look dated at all, inside and out. Sportwagons rule!
Love the Stagea!
Wow! I had a 3.6 passat wagon ( no R36 in America) and Its like no one knows it existed, very impressed. I got 5.8sec 0-100 and a highly prohibitive top speed out of a stg1 tune. And most of all no one I mean no one see you coming the ultimate sleeper. Watch out for oil pump drive issues on early production models ( avoid 2006) and mine even with prestine maintenance started having costly issues at 240k km.
Had an R36 and it was a brilliant car to drive with amazing practicality as well. Only sold it because it developed a noise in the drivetrain somewhere after hitting a rock and destroying two wheels. Would buy another if I needed a 2nd car :)
"It's the f#$kin what is it?" Yup... Pretty much. Lol Cool vid. Look forward to seeing what other wagons you have on the list!
Mercedes AMG C63s! Would be interesting to see a car like that reviewed for Australia as a used car sedan or wagon not the coupe variant as it’s not good for Aussie roads expect the highways.. haha Keep the vids coming 🙌🏻
Love the channel mate, and this fast wagon series couldn’t be more well timed, as my 2010 Legacy wagon (2.5) is on its last legs. It’s been awesome, just lacks overtaking pull, and some creature comforts that would be nice to have (eg heated seats). I’m looking forward to your next episode as that’ll be where my budget sits. Can’t wait to see the options you choose. I like the Audi A6 / S6 (ultimate car would of course be an RS6), maybe S4 though they’re a bit small for the dogs, and BMW 535 or 550 wagons, but the idea of an early 2010s euro scares me a bit re possible repair bills. If I had the cash I’d seriously look at new Levorg (sorry WRX wagon) if it was bigger than current Levorg. I like Octavia VRS though still don’t understand how a 2L engine can produce the same KW’s (180) as a 3L Audi A6… Anyway, keep up the awesome work 👍.

@@ReDriven awesome things! I have a P80 V70 at the moment, used to have an 850 and wish I still had it.
If you're looking at the Stagea consider the series 1 and 2 from the mid 90's. They use the RB25 turbo engine from the skyline with added AWD. They even have a RB26 twin turbo model. Basically a GTR station wagon.
I had a 3.0r outback with Si Drive and it was the weak point of the drive line. Three settings: intelligent = dull and reticent to shift; sport = shifts like a '00 era Commodore; sports sharp = holds gears to redline with only mild throttle inputs. Paddle shifters were pretty obedient though and it rev matched on downshifts. Nevertheless, not the gearbox for a sports car (because the outback is a sports car, especially on dirt). Get the six speed manual👍 in the liberty, not the outback...
Love the video, was surprised given the nissan's inclusion, not to hear any mention of the mitsubishi legnum vr-4

The euro cars tend to be oil burners the general consensus amongst most of us engine reconditioners is the oil ring design. Plus most of the older ones do not like any ethanol in the fuel it can gum their shitty rings up and game over.
So close! Love my MY04 GT Liberty. Sexy white wagon!
There was a rare Autech Stagea fitted with the 350z VQ35DE motor. Which if you could find 1 with a manual box would be worth having over the VQ25DET version in my opinion.
I see you’ve used one of my photos of my old tuned by STi wagon I miss dearly

I had an R36 Passat Regret selling it. Best car I have ever owned!
Mate, I appreciate that you mentioned the A4. I would not expect the A4 to be cheaper than VolksWagen (of any kind). More importantly the fact that you remind people that repair bills for an used Audi can drive people mad and/or broke. Here in EU, Audi is considered "premium", where-as Volks is a "average Joe's car" and as such same component would cost probably 2x for Audi, even though it can be literally SAME piece.
I completely agree - a good sportswagon is something special, and something I have long wanted ... yet still haven't gotten. I don't actually know which of your list I would choose, though leaning towards the R36, the Liberty and the Skoda.
Thanks for a great series! Just one constructive criticism: It would be nice to see/hear/have HP and Torque (Nm) figures with each car presented. By the third car, when I hear "5kw more" or "15Nm less", I already forgot to what we are comparing it too (The Nissan Stagea for example). And its nice you are including the kw figures, but BHP would be more practical, as you dont need to do head calculations from kw to HP, which most people are used to. So just having simple HP and Torque numbers for each car would make your series videos really perfect. Otherwise, I love your series videos. Thanks for your work, and I hope this channel really blows up! (in a good way, not the Subaru 2.5l turbo way).

Come on Adam mate, where's the Falcon BA turbo wagon as an honorable mention??? 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
That GR Yaris in the back :)
You lost me when you said that the A4 wagon was #2. I almost moved on to another video. That is a beautiful car and I want one. I own a 2013 Vw passat 3.6 premium, which is my first VW. OMG do I love this car. You hooked me back in when I you said that the R36 Passat was #1. I wish they brought that car to the states. They would have sold those on Sunday. I wanted to find out the specs on tht car vs my VR6 3.6 so I can maybe add a few things. But anyway, im looking for that 2013 A4 wagon with the DSG, a low milage grandma car. They have won me over with these.
Stagea looks like a hearse for when you're late for your own funeral.
I would be happy with a Saab 9-3 Aero or a VFII Commodore SSV, both in wagon form, each representing thoughtful design of their time to make sure the wagon shape looks even better than their sedan counterpart.

“Not all of them, just a lot of them” heh I would like to see one of your statistics on that 😆
The Alfa 158 looks sooo good... but yeah has to drive good too 😉
I may get poo poo'd but my Holden VZ LX8 is fast and cheap. A $500 tune, exhaust and intake and it rips to 100kmh in mid 5's in all weather and road surfaces. It's half the price of the equivalent SS wagon but still has the 250kw LS1. Sure the 4l60e found its neutrals at 280,000km and the bushes all fell apart but its now in excess of 300,000km, tows a race car, goes off road, takes me everywhere and it sleeps 2 in comfort also the sound of the LS makes the fuel usage almost bearable.
Had the pleasure of driving a Stagea. This one had the RB25 Turbo. I’m my opinion, the best family wagon that Japan could offer in the late 90s early 00’s. Glorious! Also, I thought that the RS6 Avant (with that twin turbo V10) would get a mention?! Maybe in part 2?

The Alfa 159 SW is a great choice. Just make sure you get it with the 1750 I4 Turbo engine, which is much more reliable than the quite disappointing Holden-made 3.2 V6. Also drinks considerably less...
Volvo V60 t6 is worth considering as well!
Love the Stagea; just wish it looked better.
I'd love a fast wagon. For me it's a toss up between the M35 Stagea 250t or 350 RX, and the 1JZ Crown Athlete Estate. I've currently got a P12 Primera wagon with a QR20DE+T, but definitely want something with a bit more punch from the get go, higher tuning potential, RWD or AWD, and no CVT.
I knew a Volvo and VW would be on the list - the VR6 is great, but the timing chains...oy vey. Thanks for the wicked videos guys!
The only right answer is a Saab 9-5 aero. The fastest and most reliable car ever made.
Toyota crown wagon on grey imports. 850 Volvo wagon. Australia vy ss wagon manual
Wagons are the coolest! I have an '05 Legacy Wagon in a manual. One day a clean Legacy GT manual will pop up.... If I win the lottery, C43 AMG Wagon in blue....
Great list... I hope the Acura TSX SportWagon makes the Part 2 list. I'm torn between the Acura and Legacy for my winter car... thoughts?
@zeroyon4562
2 жыл бұрын
I’d go with the legacy. I owned a 3.0r Spec B wagon with the 6 speed manual box, and I currently own an Accord CM2 wagon. My thoughts on it are that the Honda is better built and has a better driver space, and the K24 is super reliable, but the Legacy is better to drive. Unlike this video however, with the Legacy I think the 2.0GT is better than the 3.0R. The 2.0GT is better on fuel and you can modify it. Reliability is a wash between the engines imo. We don’t have snow here really so I can’t comment on either as a winter car.

@@zeroyon4562 thanks for the suggestion, I will keep an eye for the Subaru
Having been a passenger in a couple of them the Mazda MPV is a suprisingly nimble and fast car that people dismiss at a glance and it's a shame they do. Just a thought for a couple of video ideas for yourselves if you wanted to do them are luxury car brands/models that are now seen as an everyday car and everyday car brands/models now seen as rides for the rich.
I know you're being international, but shame the good old Commodore Sportwagon didn't get a shout out.
I'm in the middle of trying to get rid of my XC90 to get a wagon 👐
The B7 A4’s are arguably more reliable than the B8’s, but they do have their common issues as well. I’ve got the sedan, but wish I had the wagon. The 3.2 V6 is much less tunable, but is faster out of the box.

My 1998 B4 RSK has 200.000 km, no problem and way better handling, reliability than a Taudi A4. The HG on the 2.5 happen on the turbo version, especially the tuned one, had a 2.5 l non turbo with 300 k never had any problems.

The Volvo 850r was a bad wagon, didn't have a lot of aftermarket support there was some stuff available I think the biggest drawback in it though was the front wheel drive I don't like high horsepower front wheel drive cars. I believe they did make it and all-wheel drive and sold it in Canada only I would love to get a hold of one of those.
@ReDriven
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Curt, thanks so much for watching and commenting. I actually owned an 850R and it was fantastic. You're 100% right, at the time there wasn't a load of aftermarket stuff out there but the few things I did made a world of difference (ECU, exhaust, intake, front diff, big brakes, full Ohlins suspension gear, great tyres, the usual stuff) and through some twisty mountain roads, easily kept pace with HSV Commodores and that period M3. Without the diff it required patience to feed the power on but with the upgraded diff, it tore out of corners. There's a chance that with all the extra weight of the AWD system, it might be more inclined to understeer too. Off the line, for sure the extra traction helps but once you're up and running, a well set up front wheel drive can seriously hold it's own. (Eg, current Civic Type R). - AK

Great video but . . . Subjectively that Alfa is ugly at the front and lets face it most of the wagons look similar at the other angles. Skoda should have made it. It is the better cut price VW option IMO and nicer looking. The Nissan front end looks very old but the squared off back end is clearly practical like a wagon should be and AWD is a good thing, certainly better than FWD. You are right about Subaru turbos being money pits and even the Liberty with its family persona probably gets thrashed like a REX. Looking forward to the next category. P.S. 0-100kmh and top speed. Please research and give us figures. This is Fast Wagons.
