Bettas are such intelligent fish. I started to feed my betta from the back of the tank where there's an opening on the lid. My betta quickly learned to associate back of tank means food being dropped. He'll wiggle and dance and beg and then quickly swims to the back waiting for the food to drop. So adorable.

My betta tank is designed to emulate boggy conditions with a large amount of plants growing from the top of the tank along with lots of floating plants. This blocks out most of the grow lights, and I've attached some small accent lights on the trellis that the plants are sitting in, this for a really nice dappled effect inside the tank.

I’ve also found over the years that bettas prefer dimmer lighting. This works perfect in nature for them but in a controlled environment can be tough especially if you want ‘high light’ and co2 hungry plants. What I’ve found and learned is that the ideal setup is a 5.5-10G dirted, low light planted tank with lots of realness, shorter photo period or lowkey lighting, sponge filtration, Sicce jolly or similar, with lots of real driftwood or catappa leaves and strict maintenance followed and you will have the happiest Betta, one who thrives and lives a long life. Some folks have achieved ultimate balance over time and have relatively low maintenance tanks (see Father Fish’s channel), but that takes time patience and experience. For beginners looking to get in to betta keeping, I recommend to first: research and save your money. Know who to purchase from, and when (petco DPG sale), etc. Slowly work on your build and really take the time to truly think of every which way you want to set it up and which components you want to use on the tank, follow proper cycling measures, and introduce your fish finally to its new “bettar” home lol. A cup is no place for a betta or any fish for that matter. When I first got back into the hobby after 15 years, I had SO much to relearn and still continue enjoying doing so. A big part of the hobby is patience. And In the long run a love for science. Ok there’s my shpeal Kasia! Great vid as always, you’re making bettas and their humans everywhere very proud that you’re someone who believes in spreading proper fish tips!

I love this video!!! I love how you explained things and I've done some of the 'don't do' over the many years myself. I had a female betta in a 10 gallon, researched for months to set up her tank. I put a cholla log in her tank. It was tight, no pathway in, so I thought it safe. Well, after time in the tank, it expanded. One day I couldn't find her in the tank. My son finally found her, stuck in the cholla. We had to carefully break up the log to get her out (took forever and I was so worried). Thankfully she survived, she had a 'scar' from it though.

I have a veiltail that LOVES to find a tiny spot and cram himself in there. I had to scape a tank with NOTHING sharp or even anything close together really. He was in there for about a year before he got bored and started fin biting. I've been moving him around to different tanks (set up for bettas and also moving the other fish) to give him a new place to explore and not get bored. He hasnt crammed himself anywhere yet and his fins are growing back pretty nicely. I hope it stays that way. (All sponge filters, all natural plants, and round stones in all the tanks for general betta safety) Great list. I feel it's very important to know these things. We always talk about what to do but not what NOT to do. Keep it up!

That is something that I was going to mention. I have a temporary setup for my half-moon including river rocks. The river rocks are holding down an anubias plant while I find a good piece of driftwood to glue it to. Well, that naughty boy swam between the gap made by the rocks and almost got stuck. Thankfully I was there at the time to drag him out. Bettas are very curious so people need to make sure the tank is "child-proof", the child being the betta in this situation lol

I have varied flow rates in my tanks and have lots of Bettas (including a large sorority tank) and find that they enjoy resting in the super low, almost still, portions of the tank but they also like to ride the waterfall flows like surfers shooting to the end of the flow. I guess you have to try what works best for you. TIP: Add surface plants to create calm zones in higher current areas.

In terms of filters, I've had success with waterfall filters that can be set to a really low flow. I have a betta in such a tank and I've had no issues with him. Sometimes he even goes and "plays" in the waterfall, letting it push him down and then swimming back up to do it again (most of the tank is really calm water with no flow so he can escape it, don't think he is just tumbling around the filter all day hehe). The other thing that I think would be helpful to add is that some fish like it better when the tank is full of plants. My veiltail will absolutely shred his tail to nothing if his tank is not covered with plants. I had to invest in some really hardy plants (I do not have a green thumb) so that he would stop throwing tantrums...

One thing i noticed is after the fail, when I removed the female, in 2 days the female started releasing all its eggs. It happened with all 3 females. What might be the cause?

What about half a seashell that I found at my local river next to a piece of driftwood? It's a freshwater river that eventually leads to a saltwater bay a few miles away and it was submerged for who knows how long. Would that be ok? It's pretty small. Like the size you find at the beach and it's just one half.

Regarding #5, my betta tank has a quite small (typical) nano filter, which does push out quite some water along one side of the tank. My betta seems to enjoy swimming around the stronger airflow and just drop herself into it, being chucked around afterwards. I did try diffusing the flow, as well as blocking her from getting into it, but she found a way every time. She also keeps swimming against the waterflow to catch food passing by... I guess there are personalities in fish. 😅

Mine as well doesn’t seem to mind the flow too much. I have a small filter turned down to slowest output. When I feed him (pellet by pellet) he chases the food as the filter pushes it, I suppose it simulates hunting a little.

Thank you. We’ve had our betta since 7/2022. His fins have shortened. It’s not fin rot he may have bee. Stressed as it was out first betta tank. He’s now in a planted tank 10 gallons. No sharp items. With one neither snails and a sponge filter as you showed. I have the filter on very low. He’s very curious. I’m nervous to trim some plants. I fear he’ll accidentally get in the way. Is there a way to keep him away from my hands and sharp objects while I’m pruning without removing him? We removed him every time we did a water change. Of course he doesn’t like to be scooped out with a cup. I wouldn’t 😄

  • @nuts4fiber

I think older bettas just lose the lush fins of their youth! When I clean, I remove my bettas with my cupped hand, into a cup of their original water, while I deep clean their small tanks. I prune the plants, get rid of any algae, and gently clean the gravel and big rocks with water only (I remove what snails I can, but the remaining ones seem to float to the top of the gravel, so they survive), then reintroduce the betta into clean, conditioned, room temperature water, using my hand again. I think it's less stressful than poking around cleaning the tank, although I will sometimes pull our algae, pull out a plant to trim, and replant it, while the betta(s) are still in the tank. It all depends on the job.

I was wondering, is Duckweed was okay for betta fish? Some of my friends say it's completely fine but my other friends say it seems to "cut off oxygen" and has caused their bettas to pass. Also, do you have any beginner tips for what type of real plants you could keep in a tank with betta fish that are also okay for blue shrimp?

  • @nuts4fiber

    @nuts4fiber

    10 ай бұрын

I'm sure Duckweed is fine with bettas. The fish can easily poke through to get air. Duckweed can be a real pain, though. Just thin it out whenever it gets too thick. I'd worry more about the rest of my plants getting enough light. All of my tanks were once overrun with it. I liked a little of it, and tried to keep it contained to just one tank, but eventually, it all died out. Right now, all 4 of my big tanks, and my 2 betta tanks are overrun with Java Fern, all from one clump a friend gave me. I really love the small clusters of an underwater philodendron that I've managed to keep going for years. That's nice and low for the front of the tanks.

I usually hate silk plants.... They almost always fray and fall apart even within just one year, unless they're a type that I can feel has a mixed plastic material of some sort. Instead I do use what I think will last, if it passes the pantyhose test as well as just feeling for sharp bits with my fingers. As for things that aren't designed for a tank, I do still think plastic toys (no metal screws) meant for babies and small children are generally fine, as they're designed to withstand often being in a kid's mouth without harm.
