If you felt the key feel of some of the rubber domes i have to use every day, you'll see its a night and day difference, they feel like they were designed by masochists for the main point of torturing its user, after 2 minutes i went from 50 wpm to 20 on it, at least my one cherry mx keyboard lets me easily stay at my normal typing speed lol.

i have experience with smk 2nd gen and box jades - they actually feel pretty similar imo. the jades are actually a bit smoother, and the longer travel with more post travel matches my own preference better, but the smks are nearly as tactile and the bump feels more refined. i think id rate smk 2nd gen above box jades as well, but i might put down the thiccbar switches at #6

My favourite clicky switches are definitely the IBM Capacitve Buckling Spring Switches. Growing up, my family had an IBM PC purchased in 1984. It was the greatest introduction into the PC world that I could have ever hoped for. The Model F keyboard that came with it felt incredible to use, even for a child. I kept using that keyboard up to 1995 when my stepfather had spilt something upon and into it. I think that it was Diet Coke. I couldn't get mad at him about it because it was he who purchased the IBM PC to begin with and let me have the Model F for my first build (I was 12 and it was a 286-16). He wanted a newer keyboard for his own 386DX-20 with the layout of the Model M. I was perfectly happy with the Model F's layout with one exception. I really do like having a return key in the bottom right corner of the keypad, something the Model F didn't have. Instead it just had that gargantuan + key, I assume for people who were used to adding machines with their giant addition keys. I understand why they did it but I really would have preferred a return key in there instead with a standard-sized + key.

Man, now I'm getting depressed. I miss my Laser VTCL 2269 and Chicony KB-5161A...sold them a while back to buy a Nintendo Switch. The Chicony board was practically mint and the blue alps were borderline orgasmic, while the Laser keyboard was a miracle. Those SMK switches are possibly the most durable things I've ever seen; the keyboard was pulled out of a barn with about an inch of literal dirt packed onto it, and after a heavy cleaning, it felt brand new. Never even opened up a single switch, either. At least I still have my amber alps Apple //c to hold me over.

interesting as always. you know what, could be nice a similar 'roundup' with the clicky switches that are made nowadays. even if the market is still a bit 'flat' with all the cherry clones, lately there's an apparent 'rerun' of 'modern clickyness'...

kailh for example, i mean their models that use the click-bar instead of the click-jacket, like all the cherry clones. so the bronze, box-white, among the full stroke ones. other names i'd have to check, anyway mine is a kind of 'hope' for new 'breed' of clickyness, maybe more than a fact... [edit] btw thomas himself reviewed them not so long ago...

I just built a new keyboard using some SMK 2nd gen MX mount switches I got from China. Ironically while the switches are what makes it special they were actually the cheapest component in the build (well, except for maybe the stabilizers...). They feel fantastic but the really cool part is being able to use all the MX keycaps available these days with a vintage switch. Truly and under-appreciated switch.

To be honest I'm slightly hesitant to share this information because I liked the keyboard so much I was thinking about doing a second one. And who knows when the seller is going to run out of stock...but what the heck, let's share the love. I got them from a seller on Taobao here: item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=540513185273 You can't really order from Taobao directly overseas but there are there are proxy services like Bhiner that can order them for you. That's what I used. I think you can also find these on Aliexpress but they charge a lot more than Taobao does, even with the proxy. Keep in mind that while MX keycaps will fit on these switches and they'll fit in MX plates for the most part, the pins are completely different. Different from Alps too. So you will need a PCB that specifically supports SMK switches, and the *only* place I know of that still makes those is lfkeyboards.com/ I guess you could also handwire if you're into that...

Did you use Bhiner? If so then yes you'll get another invoice once they actually get the item for shipping it to you. They have a lot of shipping options though, some of which are very cheap. And switches aren't really a large or heavy item to begin with. I think it cost me like $5.

Matthew Palmer That's not too bad, the foam is easy to replace. I wouldn't be suprised to see prices go even higher as more people enter the hobby and international buyers throw thier cash around. The lesser known 3101 beamprings are still relatively cheap so I would bet these videos created a bubble of demand that raised prices for the 5251 and 3278/3279.

The Model M is a fine keyboard, but if you compare it next to a Model F, the difference is very noticeable. Of course, switches aren't the only thing a keyboard consists of though ;) .

The Model F capacitive buckling spring switches are the best I've ever tried. Except for the horrid space bar, which requires far too much force to actuate. I haven't had a chance to try a Beam Spring, but since they're such a rare and expensive technology, I don't know if I would ever actually employ them.

@Chyrosran22: Still looking for a perfect tactile writing keyboard for somebody I know of, and who looks for quite some time already. Most keyboards are reviewed from a gamers or retro-based exiting perspective, not so yours. Your spectrum of reviews is outstanding and very balanced regarding all aspects. So, my question persists since a couple of time actually: which affordable and still purchasable switches and its subtype of them for a precise, tactile and rather muffled/hollow low-freq soft click noise do you would recommend for a fast writer? The caps should be not so cheap plastic peaked, sharp and pointed like the most modern gamer keyboards nowadays, rather with rounded corners, exchangable for customizations and still available in shops or maybe on ebay and they should be also available in white. Last but not least, it should be USB not PS since even the active adaption causes trouble sometimes. I know, a lot of demands. But if somebody would be able to answer this, it would be you! :-)

  • @Mareepu

Great stuff! I'm a new subscriber. I really enjoy how in-depth you get with your reviews. I have a couple of questions, if you don't mind. I've started a job that requires a lot more typing out of me, and I've developed light-to-moderate Carpal Tunnel. Will getting a keyboard switch that will prevent me from 'bottoming out' help me with finger strain (I have a heavy hand), or will learning with a lighter switch with a tactile bump be best? (I am looking into investing in a mechanical ergonomic keyboard, possibly.)

Chyrosran22 , thanks for responding! Ah, I see. Would you suggest trying out switch testers, or will they be a waste of time and not give me a proper idea to what might be right for me? (I suppose the best option would be to find some folks nearby who are keyboard enthusiasts, haha)

Mareepu yes, trying out other people's stuff is ideal. A switch tester can help, and will certainly give you a rough idea, but it's always different when typing on a whole boardful.

Thanks, yeah they look very similar to the Futaba MR-6C. But not exactly. The pins on the bottom are different. Maybe an earlier version or something. I broke a pin on two of them when desoldering. So maybe I'll pry one apart to see how it compares on the inside. I didn't expect it to be MX compatible. I'll probably just make a numpad out of them.
