And here I am with a $20 wireless keyboard/mouse combo. I'd love to see you make that sound good.
That car dampening foam is OP. Really clever idea to keep the residue in place for the standoffs to mimic gasket mounting (even though it probably made reassembly difficult). I used a similar product from Noico (along with butyl rubber and packing foam) for the hollow space inside my Redragon K552. It sounds like an absolute unit now. Would be cool to see more videos modifying "basic consumer level" keyboards that anyone can easily buy online.
Love blue switches, love Click, Clack, Moo, love your videos. I'm kind weird I guess.
Seeing the way he lubed the switches with Superlube oil inspired me to lube my switches in a similar way, I lubed my tangerines with Krytox 105g0 and none of the switches stopped working, the oil lubing method gave them more of a soft sound and bottom out, similar to silent switches which might have pieces of rubber in them to make them quieter, it does a similar thing. An issue I did have, though, was when I opened them up to spring swap them afterwards, the leafs of a few switches came out of the bottom housing and I had to throw away some switches, but overall, it worked well.
I've actually been thinking of modding my keyboard with melamine foam (mr clean dry eraser stuff). Apparently it's non flammable and pretty cheap. maybe you can try this in some of your videos.
This video comes at a great time! I'm getting a new keyboard but the only ones they had were with blue clickies🤢 and it'll be a while before I can get other switches for the board
I'm saving this! This is what I plan on making next year!
I've watched your stuff for a while, idk how long but a good while. I'm doing online grad school soon and ik I'm going to be reading alot and writing alot from readings - essays and stuff. I recently bought myself an about $20 keyboard just to start off for grad school, bc I don't want to be scrunched up close to my laptop while trying to read and all that. Your videos have been really helpful in knowing what to look out for and possibly change over time as I notice it.
Honestly that plastic wrap mod is genius, you should probably do one layer of painters tape and maybe pe foam and the top and then do the vacuum seal
Howdy Hey Hipyo! Question: do you find after modding the back/inside of a keyboard case, that the case and/or PCB bends? I’ve modded an Akko 3068B with some 1/8 inch foam, and the front edge of the case looks bent downward, while the keys/PCB appear to be bent upward. Just curious if this is common, or if I’ve overestimated how much I can put into the case.
Surprisingly nice. I like clickly switches... if they arent mx blues lol

An antistatic bracelet doesn't help if you aren't grounded. Which is an important part to remember in the static shock segment.
@Alice_Fumo

the whole point of an antistatic bracelet is to plug into ground so that you are grounded, obviously it wouldn't work if you just don't connect the wire on them to anything, which is why I don't really understand your comment.

This is a video 🙏
For what it's worth, this video inspired me to try doing something similar with my Logitech G Pro keyboard. I did a very... uneven job, I'll confess. And probably overlubed them to boot; but I made the blue switches sound and feel almost like browns, wich I'm not unhappy about to be honest. Also I put a bunch of dielectric grease in the stabs using some interdental brushes and that also helped dampen the stabs a surprising amount. (Well, surprising to me; since I've never done a custom keyboard myself it might not surprise anyone else.)
Do you not use an anti static grounding strap when modding? There like 8 bucks?
Is there custom keyboard switches that work just like the razer huntsman Tournament edition or no?
“If they are mad, whatever” *video abruptly ends* 😂
I am building my first enthusiast keyboard with linear switches (gateron north poles) but I wont lie... I've used a Logitech g710 with blue switches for like 6 years now and I kinda like the clicking. I'm excited to get my new keyboard built and I'm sure I'll love it but blue switches are fun for some people. Idk it just feels kinda satisfying to me when I press there's a loud noise. It can be inconvenient though when typing an essay through the night when people are trying to sleep hehe. I think blue (or clicky) switches get a lot of hate even though they serve a purpose for a niche audience

There's a bit of a confusing situation with attitudes towards clickies in this hobby. Most enthusiasts like Hipyo just plain dislike clicky switches in general. But those of us who do have the good taste to like clicky switches will also near-unanimously hate MX Blues and its direct clones, specifically because the click mechanism creates a rattly plasticky aftersound. Try checking out something like Kailh BOX clicky switches (white, pink, jade, navy), which feature a different click mechanism that sounds much cleaner, although still pretty high-pitched. Other options like Zeal Clickiez are also coming out with nicer clicks, but those are absurdly expensive. It's this overall lack of attention for clickies in modern boards that drives most clicky enjoyers to vintage keyboards, where there's a much bigger variety of great clicky switches.

@@Boyetto-san maybe in the future. For now as i mentioned I'm getting linears. I've always been a gamer and I decided to choose blues way back in the day (iirc mech keyboards were barely gaining traction). It's lasted me a damn while and it still works but i felt like updating for fun and i figured I'd get a linear with relatively light and short actuation point as that's technically better for gaming. NGL it probably won't make a difference but it'll bring me happiness to build (well assemble) a keyboard of my choosing. Plus my brain go "OOOOO NEW THINGY COOL, VERY HAPPY, VERY GIDDY" so yeah

@@sebseb9890 As a clicky enjoyer who's also built a few lubed linear boards, I can definitely say that the results are also deeply satisfying. But if you're like me and you can never get away from that itch for the clicks, I'd definitely recommend later building a clicky board, especially when more innovations come into the scene on that end.

Those are some cool looking caps...
okay but can you please do a kind of troll video where you use KY jelly to lube switches lol
I have my road like - Cherry Blue (and I likes it, but not my room-mate xD) so for not been as...e I moved to Kailh brown and Choc brown. Sound is better, yes, but tactile response is so soft, not like blue I like. And Choc Robin ordered for next build my Endgame can be clicky only for me. Only non-clicker I want to try is Kailh Choc Sunset, to check if they have more tacticle vs brown ones. So except this super sound on linears/tactiles am I only one who think only half-way activation with feedback is true mechanics? What the point of half-way activation if user have to reach plate to be sure it pressed, like on membrane? (And I know for speed typing we all bottom-out switches, but am I only one who don't to that on daily work?)
you should try out the e-yooso $18 full-size mechanical keyboard it is a non-hot swap board that has otomu red switches that I had bought for modding and to see how bad the cheapest mechanical keyboard was but I was shocked when I found out that except for the switches being scratchy from being unlubed that it was a decent board and the stabs where actually decent quality and where lubed for only $18
8:40 theres a switch company called hippokeys i think thats where they bought it from

why not use cling wrap instead of this plastic?

I have a Redragon k552, its my old keyboard so i did some dumb shit Step 1: take off keycaps and unscrew the keyboard Step 2: tape mod the whole back of the board (dont put back on the back shell) Step 3: cut 7 pieces of cardboard that are the size of the keyboard, (cut a space for the wire) Step 4: hot glue them all together to get the bottom of the keyboard, glue it on the keyboard. DO NOT GLUE THE WIRE Step 5: take out the switches, almost done! (Or leave them in it doesnt matter too much) Step 6: Lube all of the switches with mineral oil! This is important, dont extremely overlube them, also use a bigger brush to get more on the switches. If you left the switches in, brush over the switches with a mineral oil covered brush, do this until you like it. Step 7: after all that, wipe all the oil on the frame where the keys are, (optional) Put everything back together and ur good!
I own the GK30 version of this which is a mech-membrane keyboard, legitimately the best keyboard I've ever felt, better than Cherry MX reds, its really had the best of both worlds without feeling like im clicking a mouse like the blues.
