Gold never tarnishes. It's in part what makes it valuable: It's rare & doesn't waste away. Silver does tarnish. Metals that tarnish are oxidizing away little by little.
I found a 20 Euro bill, several knives, a bike and underwear while diving. Nothing fancy yet, but it is just so satisfying to find something underwater - even if it is not a big treasure

The gentleman that was head of this group is from Pinehurst NC. I’ve been to his home and have seen coins from this find. Totally incredible to see these coins first hand. This wreck was initially believed to have sunk of the Virginia/NC coast according to the Eastern Continental Shelf Survey which was produced by Duke University back in the 1970’s. This wreck was found off the South Carolina coast (Myrtle Beach) in over 10,000 feet of water. His investors put in $10,000 of investment monies and were paid close to 1 million in returns.
Got to love how when these people put in all the work and money to find something you have companies and government's saying it's theirs

If an insurance company paid claims on that sunken tresure, then technically they do own it, no matter who found it, they could file a claim., that's just the way it is. Same as if you lost a briefcase with a million dollars In it, & a month later, some guy finds it, you most certainly would try to claim it, same thing.

@Hammerschlägen M it's not about peoples feelings, or motives.. It's all about legalities, as in the "law of the land" These people, &.companies who continuously are searching for lost treasures, do so, fully aware of the law, &.that most likely will not be entitled to keep the recovered valuables,.but instead, just a percentage that is negotiable with the, "legal owner" as per your comment about why the insurance company isn't out there searching, it's simple, because they don't want, or need to do so, that doesn't mean in any sense of the law, that they lose ownership of the lost property. If a private individual, or search & retrieval company wants to go out in the vast expanse of the world's oceans, in hopes of locating a major treasure, then they can do that, but they are also well aware that they will not be able to fully claim it as their own, nor should they be entitled to it. Sometimes, a company will make a deal up front with the presumed legal owner, and negotiate a deal that gives them a guaranteed percentage of the recovered artifacts, if and when that wreck is found, that's always better thsn just finding it, & later fighting with the insurance company, or Government of a Country for a small finders fee. Bottom line is, those who go looking for lost sunken treasure, do so knowing that it's not theirs to rightfully & fully claim, it's a risk they take, but also, they want their name to be known in the history books,.as the person who found "X" shipwreck. It matters not, that the legal owner was not looking for it, it was considered "lost at sea" and a claims were paid on that cargo. The company who paid a claim now owns it forever & ever, there is no time statute on that, regardless if they ever attempted to locate it, or not. This is why we have laws in place, the laws are for the most part, clear. Maritime laws can be tricky, rather in international waters, or within a particular countries jurisdiction, or territorial waters. However, legal ownership is not usually difficult to establish, due to meticulous records that have been preserved & safeguarded for centuries. Just because John Doe decides to go looking for treasures, and spends 3 years before he finds one, that doesn't really matter much under the law, nor does his time, or expenses & personal feelings, however, usually always, the finding party is compensated for their efforts, as well as going down in the history books as the person who discovered it.. Laws are designed to protects the rights of legal owners, not necessarily some guy who went looking for a well documented shipwreck, knowing it was never his to begin with.

@Hammerschlägen M yep. It may not always seem fair, especially when someone finds a sunken treasure that has been there for well over 100 years, anf as long as 300 years, one might think it's abandoned, & can now be claimed by anyone who finds it. The insurance companies paid out a lot to pay all the claims off, so they do technically & legally own it, regardless how much time has gone by..Thr good thing though, is the finder usually always recovers his expenses in locating thr treasure. As for the Spanish galleon ships that sunk, and are claimed by Spain when one is found, I feel is unfair, because all the silver & gold was stolen from the indigenoud tribal people, like the Maya, Olmec & Aztec people who lived in present day Mexico, & Guatemala, & the Inca empire who lived in whstbie now, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador & Chile. The Spaniards looted all of their gold & silver artifacts & bullion they had already mined & collected for centuries, then over the course if the next 300 years, Spain ruled all up &ndoen central & South America, & forced the indigenous to extract uncountable amount of gold from the gold mines, & transported it back to Spain, minus a handful of ships that sunk in the ocean on the way back. I feel those treasures should belong to the countries it was stolen & plundered from, & split with the people who found it, Spain should not be allowed to claim any part of it, since it was stolen in the 1st place. Like you sad though, they are very greedy, because there are hundreds of millions of dollars in gold at stake. When coins are retrieved, they are especially extremely valuable, for their numismatic (collector) and rarity value, which far exceeds the value of their gold and silver content. In 2018, one such ship, the San Jose that sunk in 1708, was found off the coast of Colombia, it's value? A whopping 22 BILLION DOLLARS! How's that for a surprising payday?

I have 7 Escudos from the 1700's... I kid you not... I got all of them appraised and 4 of them are worth around $35,000 and the other 3 are worth around $11,000.. I plan on selling a few of em around my retirement, but I plan to give one to my child, and for him to pass down his children and so on..... But if someone ends up selling them after I die, then so be it..... But When I do die, I plan to be buried with 2 of my highest valued Escudos..... I love the History of the Golden Age of Pirates.... an I want to be buried with a bit of their history....
Interesting that they were diving on Nitrox, which means that the wreck was in less than 30 meters os water. Nitrox becomes toxic when the depth exceeds 30 meters, 3 atmospheres.
