@@hil449Normally I hate that argument, but in this instance it's actually pretty justified. There's a _huge_ difference between handing data over to a third party by default, versus someone knowing you self host, and having to actually gain access to your home network and hack into your email. Needing anything beyond the security of a self hosted email falls into the realm where even accessing google to write this comment is a concern. I dont know exactly what is of _that_ importance to keep private, but email shouldn't be your method if it is. Most of us are regular people who just hate spyware and being treated like animals by the system. We need email because of things like account recovery and so on.

I think some of them are comparing different email and VPN services to identify which ones are better, while others are telling you the bare minimum you would need to avoid the ongoing mass surveillance from corporations and governments. So she emails and VPNs are clearly better than others, but all of them fall short vs other more private services like TOR.

Because even if you recover your password you only have access to encrypted messages. What if I had banking and gourvement documents in there? I've only had to reset my email password once in 15 years, but just that one time with Protonmail and Tutanota would have made me lose my job.

I use Proton mail but it is kind of redundant saying it is secure. Lets be honest, most people use email for password resets, viewing bills/invoices etc. Most company's couldn't care less about end to end encryption. Half the business emails are sent from an outlook account, Microsoft can see the recipients sent and received emails. If you were trying to use it for private conversation, Proton to Proton, there are better secure IM services out there, for example Signal. Email is really just one of those things you need for public life. If all you use mail for is viewing bills, resetting passwords etc then chances are Microsoft and Google are already viewing half of them.

Thats true; really makes me reconsider buying a proton paid service. Between the https connection and the proton VPN, I dont even know why Id need to set up a proton-bridged client on my local machine for the added security. I dont even use email for 2FA or password resets; I have a password manager so forgetting passwords is never an issue, and I use authenticator apps for 2FA.

I installed an email server and boy was it painful. Interesting learning experience, but a pain in the ass to set up nonetheless. And then when you set it up you still have a ton of work with DNS. And then you will likely end in some spam folders anyway because some providers like gmail don't like funny weirdly named email domains. I have yet to use it for anything but test emails, though.

For me there are actually just two - Tutanota and mailbox. One buck per month for the basic plan which is more than enough for most private usage cases and they don't sell to third parties which is the most important thing. Encryption is all good and fine but why would some person, organisation or state force encrypt mails if there are much more simple and efficient ways to get to the content of stuff written with a keyboard. It's much simpler to inject a key-logger and it even has extra value. Protonmails prices are outrages and their rhetoric simply is fear mongering and nonsense. If someone wants your data they'll get it if they know what they're doing. Also, the good thing with Tutanota and mailbox is that they're big but not too big. Most domain/aliases are still available. For some weird reasons proton lists that as an positive (as being reliable and not going bankrupt anytime soon) but it actually is more a burden than anything.

Marc Lombart Andy Yen, CEO of Proton Tech AG, is a Taiwanese-American. Much of the Proton service relies on its Taiwanese staffs and its office in Taipei. Considering Taiwan’s full subordinate status to the US empire, anyone who really cares abt privacy should BOYCOTT PROTON PRODUCTS.

Every one of them can be intercepted and read because of port 25 Also, using Windows or MAC also has back doors built in. Using a cell phone is like shouting out your window everything you and the other says. I use 2 of those emails you mention. Each for a different purpose and access both via TOR. And NOT using those 3 I mentioned to do it. Hosting your own email server is bad too. 1 search warrant and you are toast.

Actually, most of these don't use port 25. Proton, for example, uses a bridge to offer SMTP and IMAP functionality. The bridge encrypts everything on the computer before sending it to the proton servers on a unique port, and the proton servers will send encrypted email to the bridge local on your computer on a unique port...and the bridge decrytps and put it in the client through a common port locally. A lot of encrypted emails services offer no clients or IMAP/SMTP/POP3 support just to avoid this complexity (Like StartMail) , and just have you access your email through web only.

@@alouisschafer7212 Well yea if you don’t use it for a few months or something that’s understandable, but how long is the window before it self destructs? Imagine you use it for important things and you only want to use one email instead of having to manage more. A week passes and bam it disappears.
