UMK has totally changed in recent years. Before nobody cared about it because we would just send something mediocre to Eurovision which would inevitably get a bad result. But since 2020, the quality has gotten significantly better and it has started to attract more and more talented artists. Even the songs that don't win will still be succesful, with nearly all the UMK songs charting in Finland and launched BESS (3rd in 2022) into stardom. It is being taken a lot more seriously and will probably occupy the same kind of influence on the music industry like Melfest does in Sweden.

UMK is my favourite national competition. I have Benjamim's. Kuumaa's, Keira's and Robin Pakalen's songs in my playlist. Any of them could have been a top 10 at Eurovision this year. And Kaarija will be forever a legend.

I was most surprised to see the UK so high, although I guess being big five and 2nd in 2022 helped bring them up a lot. I’d like to share my takes on a few countries since this is one of the things about Eurovision I love talking about the most. First, to continue with the UK, I agree that they’re really on what could be a tipping point this year. The way I see the UK at esc is like a ship that was sinking for many years because the crew didn’t have the morale or energy to fix it, but then Sam Ryder came along and reinvigorated everyone. And now an unfortunate accident has happened threatening the ship again, and we’re left at a point where the crew can either lose faith and give up, or prove their strength by pushing through and making it past this one bad patch to better days. The crew being the British public and BBC here. The BBC need to send another strong candidate, just to show that they can do well, or risk losing the public again entirely. They’ve been given an amazingly lucky chance in Sam Ryder’s success, and they need to take it. Next up, Bulgaria. I’m honestly heartbroken they left the contest and I’m praying they came back, because before 2022 I was certain a Bulgarian victory was just down the line. And then it all went wrong with money, and I really don’t want to see economic troubles win out over the plethora of amazing artists and songs they can offer. Next, Czechia. I really don’t think people talk about Czechia enough, their story has been so interesting. For a country that many people forget about, and one that doesn’t have a big ESC viewership, they’ve really been putting effort in in recent years and coming up with strong, unusual songs that have payed off in mostly good results. I think they just need to put in some more money to their national final and publicise Eurovision more in the country, and we could be looking at a nation that might win in the next ten years. There are a lot of underdogs in Eurovision, but Czechia is one of the ones that it seems people most want to see succeed. Australia: I’m really hopeful they continue coming back, and I think they want to. I actually didn’t know about the funding issue, I thought they were just taking a while because their deal with the EBU expired this year, but whatever the cause they need to return. They’ve given ESC so much heart and personality in the past few years, and it just wouldn’t feel the same without them now. Spain: They really deserve a win, and although I respect Ukraine won in 2022, you can’t deny the evidence suggests they would’ve won had the war not being going on. I agree, Eurovision in Spain would be such a party. But luckily I think they’re doing the right thing- they just need to keep Benidorm fest going, round off any bumpy edges with a professional touch, and see the artists all the way. I think a win is coming for them. Honestly I could write essays about all the different countries, but really, I’d just love to see a greater variety of countries win over the next decade. While I fully support Sweden winning this year, because Tattoo was absolutely exceptional and it’s not right to stop the best song winning just because of the country it came from, it is getting a little boring seeing the same countries at the top every time. I’m hoping to see some underdog stories come into fruition over the next few years, like we saw from Portugal in 2017. I feel that that will keep interest up across Europe, and ensure a steady number of countries remain in the contest. If you read all the way here, Ty ❤

As a Frenchman I was pleasantly surprised to see us in the top 10. Hopefully we can get a win soon, because I think that would raise ESC's profile in the country a lot. Also really a shame to see two strong ESC countries in Bulgaria and Hungary no longer in the contest. With Bulgaria I think there's hope that they'll return eventually but I've heard some things about BNT not having interest in Eurovision anymore in addition to the financial issues. With Hungary I think as long as Orban is in power there's no chance of them returning. Although Stig Karlsson did mention that the EBU is trying to get them back so maybe there's a slight glimmer of hope.

I don't live in France, but from what I've heard there was increased media attention since she was one of the pre-contest favourites. The French public and media love it when we win at something, so when we do get that win I'm sure there'll be a ton of media coverage. Also fun fact: The current president of France apparently always watches Eurovision every year.

I looked at the ranking with interest, I must say that I did not expect that my Slovenia was only in 38th place. Well, that says enough, I think we need to do things differently. I think we don't have such bad songs, we just don't know how to properly present them on stage. I am glad that our neighbor Italy is in second place, especially because they insist on their own language, which is a big plus for me. That Sweden is in first place is of course completely understandable, they take Eurovision most seriously and their national selection is a show in itself, so they are deservedly the most successful.

I'm very curious if anyone was watching Eurovision Éire on Sunday (JESC Irish selection) because it was SUCH an upgrade from RTÉ's Late Late Show. There was ALOT of effort put it despite a dodgy voting procedure and TG4 being a way smaller broadcaster... interested to hear yalls opinions!!

Yes. Where RTÉ lacks urgency with ESC (which, to my mind, is disgraceful and just stinks of base arrogance), TG4 has it in bags. I still think it's a deeply flawed selection method and not nearly enough people know of JESC's existence in Ireland but at least TG4 actually want to take part, promote the Irish language on a big stage, and hopefully get a good result. I do think the inclusion of an online vote is quite wise from their perspective because let's face it, mostly Eurovision fans vote on the acts, much like at JESC, so a rapport is built between the fans and our act, and that can give them a boost and can translate into a good result, and increased appreciation of the Irish language by default. RTÉ's approach, meanwhile, is, to put it diplomatically, terrible. They can bleat on about how they actually want to win all they want, but do they really care about winning if they only stick to the songs and acts that have been sent in to them, or make excuses for why winning and doing well is so difficult (oh, we're underfunded, oh, we don't have the right infrastructure)? Their whole approach is so passive. There's no proactivity, no real investment and really, all their approach does is inflate the idea that they really don't want to win. Honestly, any broadcaster or country that doesn't really want to win Eurovision should just f**k off out of it, and I will say that about RTÉ, BBC, the German broadcaster, TVP in Poland, DR in Denmark, any of them. I only want countries taking part if they're actually serious about winning it.

Whereas your Netherlands have been so for 10 years, hence being as high as 7th. If Finland keep this up, theyll be Top 10 too

I would LOVE for Sweden to finally send something in our own language. 10 years ago, Swedish pop wasn’t really that popular here, but in the past years, a lot of big artists here have released fantastic pop songs in Swedish. For some reason, it feels like Melodifestivalen is a bit behind… Because now I think it gets a bit boring honestly. Would also love to see us send some other genre, especially a rock entry, but I guess we’re just too afraid to get bad results…😢

But yeah, I think the Swedish public generally still believe we can’t do well without a song in english. And Anna’s non qualifier in 2010 still hurts too much in our collective memory. I don’t think most people in Europe realize how much that hurt our pride lol.

I don't think it has that much to do with being afraid to get bad results, if that were the case, then people wouldn't have voted so much for Anders Bagge in 2022, no one in their right minds would seriously think that he would've done great in Eurovision, people in Sweden voted for him because they loved _him_ . Thankfully the juries knew better, and we sent Cornelia. People just vote for whatever they love. It feels like Melodifestivalen has to _beg_ one or two rock bands to join every year, and that bands who get there are there a bit reluctantly. I think it has more to do with rock bands not being that eager to perform in Melodifestivalen, I think most of them thinks it's too... whatever "folklig" is in English... to them it probably lacks cred, edge, Melodifestivalen is probably to much glitter, rainbow flags, families with balloons etc, for most rock bands to feel at home there. It's like getting a gig at a kid's birthday party, I think a lot of rock bands feel that doesn't sit well with their image.

Concerning Czechia's and especially Slovakia's low interest in the competition, my girlfriend is Slovak and I showed Eurovision to her in 2021 for the first time and she's never even heard of its existence before, I get not watching but never even having heard of Eurovision as a European was shocking to me! I went on to ask a Czech friend of mine and she didn't know what Eurovision was either. This year, I watched Eurovision 2023 in Slovakia, and on Slovak TV there wasn't even a Slovak channel that showed it, we had to find a czech channel (it's common to have czech channels on slovak TV) that's showing it and all the commentary was in Czech... None of her family or friends knew about Eurovision either and I got them to like it which made me happy :D But this just goes to show how little people over there know about it and I wonder why that's the case, just across the border to Poland, everybody knows about it!

To give some insight on Spain's situation right now. They changed the HoD, but actually this one wasn't much in control of the selection process or the songs that we were sending on that time (2017-21). She was at the front when Spain returned to JESC with some amazing results. Also the direction and song selection team for this BFest seems to be much much better than the last one, Rayden (finalist on 2022) being all in with the project and saying they found some big names that are showing interest in participating and some songs that could do really really well. So... I don't think it looks too bad for now?

I really, really hope Ireland, Georgia, and/or Latvia have a Netherlands 2013-present moment soon (right now I think Latvia is the most likeliest). It may suck now but I do believe countries that are in the pits for a long period of time can have a change of pace. I think Moldova can do decently with juries, I think part of it is jurors (aside from their neighbors) probably didn't fully understand the context of their last 2 songs and wrote them off. I believe in 2017 they were on the left hand side of the scoreboard with just jury points and Hey Mama is a very slick pop song and had solid staging. They really need to just hit that sweet spot to get another top 5 result or win the whole thing.

Throw away prediction for countries I think could do really well (and potentially win) in the coming years and why. Finland: UMK is becoming one of the best NF of the ESC season and with the success of Blind Chanel and Kaarija in recent years, I see a win soon. Norway: Like Finland, MGP is one of the best NFs and Norway has had a good track record at the moment. Consistently making the top 10. With a little more momentum I think they have it in them to produce another winning track. Serbia: A bit random but I think the success of Konstrakta has set a new fire in Serbia. Samo Mi Se Spava was also a good song and I think if Serbia keep sending this more avant garde genre, I think they could see a success coming their way. Iceland: For such a small country, Iceland consistently prove they love eurovision. Power is in my top 10 of this year and like Finland, with recent successes like Daði Freyr and Hatari, I think if they keep at, Iceland could pull a win out the bag. Luxembourg: Their return is the going to be the talk of this years ESC. And from what their PR team has said, it seems like their excited to be back. Luxembourg have a good track record and they've had nearly 50 years to craft their comeback. I definitely see them coming back with a bang. Winner of 2024??? Belgium: Given that Rhythym Inside and City Lights are massive fan favourites, they came 10th in 2016 and now 7th this year (which kind of came out of nowhere). I think Belgium have got the desire to win and I think theyve shown they can send good songs. UK and Spain: Sam Ryder and Chanel have reignited the spark for ESC in these countries (especially here in the UK with Liverpool hosting). Even though Blanca and Mae didnt get the results they deserved this year, I still think the drive to show that the big 5 should be taken seriously is there. I see good things for these two. And of course you can never rule out the powerhouses that are Sweden, Italy and Ukraine. Amazing track records and consistently great. The golden children of eurovison.

As a Hungarian, I am quite surprised that we finished so high, but then again, we had consistency, it was very rare when something performed actually poorly, so I am happy. 2019 for us was basically what Poland went through this year, there is no proof that cheat voting happened, but an audience favorite was knocked out in the national selection final in favor of a proven, safe choice, and that caused a big public dissatisfaction. As for us not participating, it absolutely has to do with our political leaders and the ones who control the public broadcasting, being very antagonistic toward other European countries, as well as being very anti-LGBTQ and culturally out of touch. But there is an audience still, and we were one of the bigger voters among Rest of the World this year! Sadly, I don't see things changing anytime soon, and we will stay out of the competition for a long while.

I'm not a music expert, or a Eurovision expert necessarily, just a hardcore fan, but I feel like Greece flopped because we literally entered a doom and gloom era of "we have more important things to worry about" and it's at the same time understandable but also sad? We don't even need to go overboard with budget spending if that's a concern, but ERT has been notoriously stubborn and will listen to no criticism on how they do things and I don't think that will be changing any time soon, unfortunately. On top of that, the general public doesn't see it as this big event and a matter of national pride anymore, even during our golden years, there were still people snubbing the whole thing, but we could at least afford to pay attention to "silly things" back then. Nowadays people have this notion that this is a joke event and something we shouldn't bother with, most of the time the artist we send are not even known at all in Greece (and remain that way after the contest, no matter how good or bad they do) and I think bigger artists don't really care or want to associate themselves with the contest as a result of the general public seeing this as a waste of time. Literally the only one who had been BEGGING ERT to go for years in the 10s was Eleni Foureira (I think she was only ever part of a duo on our national final in 2010..? But that was before her career took off and the song was shit lol) and ERT was always like "yeah we'll see" so her getting to go with Cyprus and doing amazing was such a winning moment! Right now I don't think our biggest obstacle to doing great again in the Contest in a money issue but rather ERT itself. When Eleni was projected to win literally everybody tuned in and was happy to, in a way, be represented through her, and this was well into the "Eurovision is a joke" era so if ERT puts an effort and sends something that actual Greek people will actually be proud of and rooting for, public interest will surely rise. Recent good efforts with Stefania and Amanda were good results but had literally zero elements of our music culture and therefore the general public did not really care to rally behind them. I liked both songs but it was pretty evident that these two, Victor's as well as Katerine Duska's songs were all selected with an "appeal to NorthWestern Europe" perspective and it was only successful 50% of the time so it's not even working properly lol. On the other side of things, Andromache flopped BUT she was actually able to kickstart her career here in Greece and I think she's doing pretty well, especially considering how she's not in any of the big labels I think. People generally don't even know or remember that she represented Cyprus in Eurovision 😂 Tamta was also able to reignite her, kind of, stagnant career after she had, more or less, fallen out of the general public sphere in the 10s. Imagine if we sent someone that was actually well liked / chosen by the public and then, regardless of their eventual placing, they were able to kickstart a career in the Greek and Cypriot music scene... it would reignite both public interest as well as artists and producers themselves being more willing to both participate and also put an effort. Great work on this video Tom, it was really fun to watch!

wow awesome comment, thank you for this. It's so hard as an outisider to know what is going on in terms of the context of the competition in a country, the cultural elements as well as what's happening with the broadcaster. So much of what you said makes so much sense in explaining why Greece has kind of fallen down. It seems like Greece could get away with sending more amateur people in the naughties, but now the standard of the contest has risen, that strategy just doesn't work anymore. As you suggested, sending something a little bit more contemporary and Greek would probably woo the general public and also get a better result. But that requires ERT to listen and take criticism, and based on last year's MESS, that doesnt seem likely to happen

24th place 🇵🇹 on ESC it is what it is. From Salvador Sobral winning in 2017 I only don' t realy Liked Telemóveis and O Jardim also was not a good song. Black Mamba, Maro, Mimicat and Iolanda had top entries and I'm proud of their work. Mostly musical ART!

Wow,amazing video as always.😀. Even before I saw this video I was quite sure that my country (Croatia🇭🇷) is gonna be in the bottoms. And without our true legends from Let 3 we would be even worse. I agree with you, this year is the path and we need to send some unique in the future to improve our results and to finally end in top 10 after long, long 22 years. Not boring songs as 2022 or 2019. I simply cannot believe that our last top 10 was in 2001 when Vanna end as 10th in the finals. 😬😬.And after this years finals I was proud but a little disappointed. Cause I had hopes that we can sneak in the top 10 because of the big televote points. And I'm afraid that in the next years we gonna send boring non-qualify songs again. I would be happy if I'm wrong. And I'm person who really don't like Junior Eurovision and I don't care about it, but we are at least the first winners there.😂😂😂 Greetings 😀😀

yea well this is where luck comes in, because if Kaarija wasnt there this year, Let 3 would have gotten SOOOOOOOO many more points. Doing well in ESC isnt just about you, its about who happens to be competing in your year and if there is overlap/competition between you 😭 eg Trenetul came 2nd last year in televote, cos they didnt have a big televote competitor

  • @nikolag.-rb5ql

@@ESCTomYes it's absolutely true because Kaarija get so many points and without him in competition countries which flopped in televote like Austria🇦🇹 or Australia🇦🇺 would also get much more points. And I am happy that we discovered him this year. But we also didn't have N.Macedonia, Montenegro and Bulgaria in competition this year. Yes, I know it would be block voting in this case, but with these 3 in the competition we would definitely end in top 10. Cause we end 6 points behind 10th Czechia🇨🇿. And as I said I hope that we will be more often in the finals then last years. And Ireland🇮🇪 as the most successful country in the ESC definitely deserves good results and not being in the bottoms.

I genuinly think that one of the most important thing for the near future is to find a way of lowering the cost of hosting. Right now it is crazy expensive. I absolutely did not want Sweden to win as it will be detrimental to SVT's (Swedish Television) productions the coming year. I always want us to do well of course, but I definitely want us to stay clear of the danger of hosting. And this is a view shared by many, not only in my country I'm sure. That aside, thank you Tom for a fascinating look at the results the last 10 years, amazing work!

Eurovision is good marketing for our country and tourism. It may be more expensive now since the inflation is damaging a lot in Sweden. But there are other options to get and save money from SVT's budget. There are a lot of money within in SVT that could be cut as for the current situation.

I really really want Ireland to do well again! 2018 was a great song and deserved some more love, but everything else... I don't know. It seems justified that they're always staying in the semis, I need more! I think they were on the right path with Midnight Summer Night this year, but live it was really weak. And well, the national final has a founding of roughly 3,50€ in total, so until they sort that out, I don't think it's gonna happen soon. But I'm still hopeful, I want them to do well! Same for my country Germany. Unfortunately we don't have a lot of "big stars" around here, and the ones we have are just generic pop singers or Schlager, so nothing would change. But it seems like we're dragging our neighbors down with us 😅 And lastly I must say, I really feel Lithuania in the last few years, wouldn't mind a win or some top 5 results at least, there could be something there. But in the end my favorite country in Eurovision is Italy and I'm not mad at their placement. Can't wait to see which song I make my whole personality next year!

@@ESCTom I don't think either of them will happen. Ikke was a really bad loser this year, saying he has proof that the national final was rigged and he won, but never showed what proof he might has. He said tho that he will be on stage at Eurovision next year, but not for Germany. Don't know if he's trying out for San Marino or if he's just talking for the sake of it. Electric Callboy didn't wanna try out this year and I think after everything that happened in 2022, they probably lost interest. Also might be a bad move to send them a year after Käärjiä, you still can't send any rock songs or bands without fans accusing them to be a rip-off of Måneskin. If we'd just send them next year we will never live it down, unfortunately.

**DISCLAIMER** I WILL TRY TO REPRESENT THE VIEWS OF EVERYONE IN MY COUNTRY IN THIS COMMENT As someone who is from 🇧🇦Bosnia AND HERZEGOVINA I can't say that I'm surprised. The thing is that BiH has a system that is like nowhere else in the world. Our national broadcaster operates only one channel BHRT 1, but there are two broadcasters for the two federal units that make up BiH - the Federation (FTV) and the Republic of Srpska (RTRS). RTRS has basically become a mouthpiece for the leader of RS, Milorad Dodik and owes the national broadcaster money, because the 3 stations have a joint bank account and RTRS withdraws more than they are allowed to. Another big obstacle to BiH's participation is the broadcaster itself. Nobody watches it. The reality of my country is that we essentially have 3 of everything and that includes our media spheres. Serbs can watch RTRS and several other predominantly Serbian channels, as well as the Serbian broadcaster. Croats (my ethnic group) mostly watch HRT and now the RTVHB, which I don't feel like going into since it is also separatist. All my Bosniak friends either watch predominantly Bosniak private channels for their news and public info. BHRT has a 3% share nationwide, which is probably the lowest of all broadcasters in the EBU. We have 3 official languages, which are all different standards of the same language, but people feel very strongly about hearing their words used. For example, during the FIFA World Cup you had 3 commentators rotating between games, but you can't really do that at ESC and even if you tried to do it, it would be a big fuss. The languages are also disproportionately used, which pisses some people off. When we used to participate, I'd watch the Croatian commentary, because the BiH one was always Bosnian and I'd only turn it on to see the voting numbers. Then you take into account that as a country we only switched to digital officially in December 2022 (Gabon, in Africa switched in 2018 so that says a lot), the fact that BHRT's HD channel still looks like shit and that they're constantly digging a greater hole for themselves and are potentially shutting down every few months 😂 since there is no political will to do something about the situation. We would also have to organize a NF, because an internal selection would probably cause another war, because someone would be like: You're not representing us😂 Even if you think back to the 2016 entry, they had Ana Rucner who isn't even a Croat from BiH, but from Croatia, but I am sure the team knew deep down that would keep the Croats at bay (especially since there was a huge political uproar against Feminnem in 2005, because one of the members is from Ploče in Croatia and not BiH (even though Ploče is BiH's only shipping port). So, we'd need a NF to give everyone a fair shot, but we don't have any experience in making live tv musical events, and when we had a NF it was literally in the news studio 😂😅. The only way out of the current situation is a complete restructuring of our public broadcasting system to one similar to Switzerland or Belgium, but that would cost a lot of money and probably still wouldn't be done properly. I am very sad about the situation in my country in terms of the media sphere, because it sends out a message that we are superdivided and apartheidist, as Western media often portrays us, but in reality it is just politicians making it out to be that way. Fellow Bosnian and Herzegovinian Eurovision fans, I hope I did a good job explaining the situation😂🇧🇦💕

you've summed it up so well! i've seen people hinting at things and mentioning things but as someone who is not from BiH and doesn't have any friends from there, the situation seemed too complicated to unpack without context. what a fascinating and super complicated situation with what language is being used to commentate...

(maybe Bulgaria if they come back soon) Assuming the scores don't change and knock one out, ofc, which having said that could be on the cards for Azerbaijan as they'll start to lose those decent scores from 13-17.
