2010 was a mess, that's when russian puppets won elections and all country got into protests as the new government was EXTREMELY nepotist, but back in 2009 when the guy nobody knows or listens to was selected, there was backlash because political connections shouldn't be the deciding factor. Later changes were due to backlash to singers fudging the votes or visiting russia after 2014... I am proud of who we sent to represent in last few years, Alina Pash has to be the worst rapper I heard, and Maruv is full-on russia cheerleader now, like supports the war and wishes us all to be dead. This can't be correct unless the French broadcaster just has its own weird rules or the EBU changed the rules later. @@Preeesco I know it's not a national selection for Eurovision (I'm Italian). Rai decided in 2011 to select an artist from Sanremo with an internal jury, but in the end they decided to send the winner of that year, Raphael Gualazzi with "Madness of love". In 2012 Rai instead decided not to send the winner of Sanremo to Eurovision but internally chose Nina Zilli, who was competing in Sanremo in 2012 but did not win (that year Emma won with "Non è l'inferno"). In 2013 Rai decided to send the winner of Sanremo. And again in 2014 Rai decided to choose the song internally (that year Emma was not in competition) so Rai decided to send a song that had nothing to do with Sanremo. Anna Vissi was in ESC 3 times, for 2 countries with a 24-year difference between her last two. You're saying she was supposed to be there 4 times?

Actually, you forgot one more entry, Denmark 1962. Apparently, Gitten Hænning was supposed to participate in Dansk Melodi Gran Prix that year with "Jeg snakker med mig selv," but was disqualified right before the show, because the composer of the entry was heard whistling the song in a restroom at DR studios. It was the bookies favorite to win DMGP that year and represent the country, and would have done better than what they sent. It's totally crazy!

Update for 2022: Ukraine: Supposed to be represented by Alina Pash and her song "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors", but it was revealed that she forged travel documents, so the broadcaster selected the second place of the national final. Malta: "Out Of Sight" originally won the national final, but both the broadcaster and Emma Muscat decided to change the songs.
