Dominic B, EBMM Stingray with a hipshot drop tuner. But in my opinion, much of those genre tones come from EQ settings and the strings. Punx not dead!

The Sire jazz type bass was very good all around. Double single coils in parallel always work nice for a slap sound. Nothing bad to say, Good slap work horse. Yamaha had that bad sounding gawk going on while popping the g string, but otherwise it sounded nice and fat. Maybe with a little eq tweaking it might be good. Chowny to me sounded akin to the Sire, but with a bit of more bass and low mid, less on treble. Chunky. I liked it, but might not be for everyone since it lacked that percussive snap that you get with active eq. I like my preamp on my pedal board so maybe I'm biased. The Spector had a really groovy tone, but seemed louder than other basses. I've always wondered about the Spector tone pump, since it is boost only. The levels get really loud if you don't roll them all the way down which would be flat like the notch on boost/cut preamps. Maybe Spector thinks louder is better? Loudness war anyone? :D The Sterling Musicman had an oddly muffled sound to my ears. Overall wasn't bad, but I felt it lacked in something. I've owned a Musicman copy at one point and the single humbucker didn't give me the sound I liked. Maybe it's the same here. With the Ibanez SR500 I felt it had a good overall tone, but it was maybe a bit too hi-fi for my tastes. I might have tweaked the eq differently. I own two Ibanez basses, neither which are an SR500. Love em to death. @9:13 Would be interested to see the swamp ash vs alder thing, but make sure you change the strings to the same set and and set them up identically, cause that also has a lot to factor into the sound.

  • @theakstonsrock

It is mostly personal preference. Usually, you want a wider string spacing to get your fingers in and a decent space between the neck pickup and the fretboard. The neck size/shape and the kind of action (string height) is going to be personal preference, like the sound of the pickup/pickup's. Can't beat going to a guitar shop, playing a bunch, and finding what feels best to you.

I enjoy a bit of funk and slap, but not nearly as much as I enjoy complaining about things on the internet. Im very tempted by a Sire jazz. I use a 5 string Stingray from the early 00's so spending over £500 wouldn't be a popular move with the other half, makes me think a Sire would be a reasonable way to scratch my jazz bass itch!

I was gonna suggest the LX but they are about £650 in the UK, so over budget. :( I really like the Rockbass line, but they are getting very expensive for a Chinese made instrument IMO with 'non exotic' woods.

When you're close to germany, the prices are fine, they were really high some time ago, but the instruments are still worth the money, being well built most of the time (not event talking about the bridge or the nut, quality of life things that you might not have on an instrument 3 times more costly)

IMHO Nathan is a far better and versatile bass player than his more famous brother, Mark. He's always very humble about his playing, but he's actually very, very good. Scarily good.

Terminology - With the V7s I'd describe the difference between the Alder and the Swamp Ash as not so much Punchier for the Ash as Twangier. It's only a slight difference and the Alder slaps very nicely. The Ash is just a little Brighter. I'd call Punch a more Low Mid kind of attack. Maybe it's just me ... btw I went for the V7 Alder. I wanted more Honk, richer Mids. It still slaps as well as any lady of the night ... ;^) For all that, it's hard to beat the sound of a Precision slapped. e.g. Rickie Lee Jones - Danny's All Star Joint ...
