    I hope this adds something to your day...We're in the Outer Banks ( the Lighthouse is our main break). My 11 year old daughter surfed (by herself, of course) in 50 degree water for an hour and a half. Then some schoolwork. Then she went out on the surf skate for a while. (Her decision) I'm trying to get her to use her upper body rotation more effectively. The trailing arm is fine, but the lead arm is always low. She's very defensive about it. I thought she'd benefit from looking at one of your videos -- there aren't a lot of models for her out there and your upper body work is strong. This video comes up. She LOVED it. The side-by-side with the Ewing video was fantastic. It showed her that even great surfers are always looking for improvements and it's really just a process of work, fun, and (hopefully) steady improvement. Thanks for the video...We're off to the skate park in 30 minutes.

    Lakey you are a true professional. . Visualization gone wrong is like the Cowboy kicker who missed 4 extra points in a row in win against Bucs . He was visualizing missing . I could see the fear and anxiety in his eyes on kick 1 2 3 and 4 . I felts so bad for him . He should have done something to visualize the ball going through the uprights . He is a great kicker , but self doubt took over . And his team is sticking with him . Love your channel Lakey . Go win that World Championship. It’s yours for the taking . I’m rooting for you .

    Biggest thing I've noticed with new surfers is "looking at your work", instead of looking where you want to go down the line. Especially when snaps were huge in 80's and 90's. Everyone wanted to see how much spray they were(n't) hucking. Great tips with the skating too. Although I think a lot of folks are "forcing" their style on surfskates lately wanting it to look just like surfing, instead of flowing, and they end up looking like robots. Being East coast I think too that most people here would be better suited to just ride mids and logs. My surfing took a big hit when I rode elf shoe/potato chip boards for a few years emulating Slater and Machado equipment, we just don't have the juice to push those wafers. Foam is your friend in junk.

    Yes visualization is huge! I surf and ski and use it in both. Also my carve board has made a big difference. Mine has pneumatic tires since my hard wheel board kept getting tripped up and throwing me off :(. The bigger softer tires go right over those hazards. Thanks for the great tips!

    Very cool video and awesome tips. Visualization is real and together with proper training anything can be done. Back in the day when I short and mid length boarded my bottom turn inspiration was the king of big silky bottom turns and cutbacks, Tom Curren. It just looked so powerful yet so smooth and easy. Video analysis is a great tool, never used it for surfing but when competing in outrigger and surfski, video training was key to fully comprehending what coaches were trying to tell us. Actually seeing your form and timing in what ever sport is key to improving.

    Thanks, that was great information. The question I have for you is, what do you recommend for working on paddling endurance besides surfing or swimming? I’m 52 years old and I transitioned to a shorter board about two seasons ago and I find that I get tired fairly quickly especially with a thick wetsuit on. I live in Boston and I surf year round, but with work and family I can’t always go, so when I do go out, I often struggle to catch a handful of waves.

  • @Lakey_Peterson

    @Lakey_Peterson

    We’ve actually had this question asked a few times. We’ll try and do a video focussed on it. I would say the cheapest and easiest way to hit the paddle muscles out of the water would be using resistance bands. You can do paddler hold variations that hit similar muscles to that you use for paddling 🙌

    Nice content. I liked your willingness to share things you’ve learned as a competitive athlete. I grew up a skater in NorCal in the late 80s early 90s, and visualization was huge. We’d watch skate videos in slow-mo over and over. I think part of the reason the kids now are so much more consistent and more skilled is precisely because they get new footage for analysis every second online, literally. Skate videos dropped once a year for us, so visual progress only came at that speed. And, getting footage of yourself was sorta reserved for the rich cause cameras weren’t cheap necessarily and editing was not easy nor fun. I heard that visualization is 38% of learning a skill. This includes watching others do it as well as pretending in your mind that it is you. Btw, I have the same problem with my top hand going more vertical in a wrap. I think it’s angle of approach partly, and trying to change direction toooooo fast rather than elongating the turn for just a split second longer. I think it’s the same in a bottom turn. Ethan finds a place to freeze his body that engages his rails longer, and even that split second creates a more fluid rail to rail such that the back arm doesn’t have to reach vertical to compensate for a rapid shift, and almost braking, coming from a change of direction. I’ve been working on the SurfSkate trying to engage that back arm at a lower angle letting it lead my turn more loosely rather than catch me after I engage a turn rapidly from my wheels/fins. I know many say all this analysis is being a “surf nerd”, but in surfing, it’s like more than half the battle. Wish my younger self could’ve figured this out.

  • @Lakey_Peterson

    @Lakey_Peterson

    Жыл бұрын

    100% things are so easy to complete analysis these days. Love that you use the skateboard as well to work on your arm angles. I’m sure it’s pushed your improvement curve forwards a lot too 😊🙌

    @@Lakey_Peterson still working on it. At 41, I need every tool there is. I was good at skating as a kid, and these SurfSkates sorta gave skating a second life for me…with the motivation of it potentially speeding up the progress of my surfing. I tried shortboarding when I first moved to Oahu at 18 from Norcal, but ended up just a fair weather longboarder in Waikiki for a few decades, and could eventually handle my own in some decent surf. Moved to BI and my local break here is fast and punchy, so at 39, I bought an entire quiver of shortboards, a few SurfSkates, and just put in the hours with the hopes that I could make progress on my 18 year old dreams that I gave up on 20 plus years ago to, “do life”. Now I’m trying to utilize all the tools, all the KZread resources, etc., to bridge the gaps and make up for lost time. As a teen and young adult, I didn’t know that surfing was soooo nuanced and that EVERYTHING LITTLE TECH THING MATTERED! Anyways, again I admire the fact that you’re sharing the knowledge. For me, I like the surf nerd videos more than vlogs. I like to learn and analyze. Noel Salas and Nate Florence are cool like that too.

    Hey Lakey! I've really been enjoying your videos! I actually grew up in Carpinteria and I think we surfed together in some comps early on! You're a little younger than me, but I remember you being a little ripper grom! I'm also a bodyworker and a Rolfer and I wanted to share with you about Rolfing, if you don't know about it already. It's a really amazing branch of bodywork that supports over-all postural alignment and focuses to the fascial network that connects the entire body. Especially with injury, it's great for unwinding compensatory patterns and finding a new way of moving and being in a body, more ease, more freedom. Check it out! Look up Rolfing or Structural Integration in your area. Ed Maupin is a legendary Rolfer and I think he may live in the San Diego area, though I'm not totally sure. Tom Tom might be into it too! All the best for this upcoming season!

    Okay, I’ll try and cover this in one of the Thursday’s to come. Advice off the top of my head would be to get two sticky dots on the ground. Measure out where you want each foot on your board and complete 2-3x10 pop up’s on land ensuring both feet are on those dots. Hope that makes sense.
