@@kevdawg55 a reasonable hourly is about 12% of the highest allowable buyin for that game (most likely 12% * $300)

It relates to the varience reason but trying to win every single hand. This was my biggest problem when I started winning. I never wanted to give up on a hand if I thought there was any possible way to win. Rather than just accepting a minimal loss and folding I would get "creative" and run huge bluffs all the time and make too many hero calls thinking it could be a missed draw rather then caring about the price and break even. Foxen said something like by doing this and trying to win every pot your not out playing anyone, you losing money from over and under folding. Pretty common sense yeah I know but I think a lot of us get too competitive and try to win every pot possible instead of playing a long term winning strat. I've gotten a lot better at this but I still do it on occasion lol

When I get drawn out I just try to remember what you said "I want to collect equity". Even if I prefer money it has been helping me through downswings. A problem I have which I think other players have aswell is that I think im entitled to the money when im a favourite.

I had a master class in this the other day when I got my money in good in three tourneys and lost to a 3 outer, a 3 outer, and a 2 outer. I reflected back on hearing JL talk about swings and while frustrated, just went, meh, it happens.

@@admranger Hardest part is getting my all in called, and getting sucked out on in the exact ways u said. Then they sit there with a smile like “yeah i planned that i’m the GOAT poker player”

I really appreciated that last segment. I have been very frustrated by a run of horrendous cards. I have been dialing my game in and feel like I’m playing easily the best poker I’ve ever played just the run has been rough the last 2 months. I started getting emotional and that definitely has not helped and I appreciate you reiterating the fact of variance. Just gotta keep plugging away. I think this string of run bad has truly taught me how to fold strong hands when I know I’m behind and that has been a valuable lesson. Again thank you for this. Keep up the great work.

This video was right on time. Had a bad session last night and this video showed me exactly why. I should have never went and played in the first place. Was on tilt from the start and a few races I lost put me deeper on tilt.

How to handle aggression in this kind of spot... Playing 1-3. $300 stack 1 limper I raise to 15 in mid position with KK. I get a button call and calls from the BB and the limper. Flop comes 875 rainbow or two tone and it checks to me. It seems like c-betting is more or less obvious, but if I am raised, I am very much unhappy. I have a big range disadvantage against multiple players. Betting small seems bad, but so does betting big. In fact, I am probably facing a whole lot of 2 pair, sets, and OESD with a pair when I am raised. Folding seems brutally weak and exploitable, but then drawing dead and putting lots of money in the pot seems insane as well. It seems like almost all the check-raising hands have me crushed or have really good equity in the case of a hand like 76. Worse still, someone with A5 or worse could simply be making a move since my range is going to only hit this flop once in awhile.

Assuming everyone plays "perfect" poker according to the mathematical odds (which all strategies are exactly aligned to), then long term, with variance, you'll only break even... Or lose to the casino rakes (just like sports betting where total odds are in slight favour of the bookmakers). You can only win if you're getting lucky (unreliable) or taking money from weak players.

@@PokerCoaching Aha... Yes... 🤣👍 I was incorrectly assuming that there was a mathematical way of turning the odds in your favour (but required a lot of computational power). I guess like counting cards in black-jack. But I guess what I was assuming was unrealistic. I guess profit comes to the person who's making the least mistakes.

Would be interested on your take on how online play helps or not bringing volume to live play

Great video. I still remember watching you win one of the World Poker tour tournaments live. Poker has changed a lot and i think the 4th reason for losing at poker is not willing to evolve your game to the current times. I've stopped playing for quite some time now and watching a lot of live poker online and vloggers.

thx for video for great perspective i play 3 tournaments a week and fire 2 $500 bullets a month at 3 clubs here in tx. anyhow, saw a pick in my phone from my last tournament cash for $2800. IT WAS TAKEN IN APRIL! THATS 6 MONTHS NO CASHES/FINAL TABLE. ive been playing tournament now for 1yr after playing cash for 1 yr. cash doesnt intest me anymore. Its the challange of tournaments im attracted to. anyhow thanks for video. been loosing alot on my flips, getting it in good w sets 2 at flop and getting outdrawn by fush 2 times this week and player says," I had to get all in with my odds."As i walked to cash table cage i responed, "nice hand sir, 7 5 always cracks my KK's" cant beat luck then play cash with same senario and win when they miss their flush drawn a lowsy $200

Almost won a tournament today, 50 person tournament, was spending my time building my chips and staying in the game, hovering around 5th in the tournament chip wise. A guy all ins before cards are in the middle, he had done this quite a bit throughout the tournament with shitty cards, i had pocket ace, so i got in. Everyone else folds, 1v1, i turn my cards, pocket ace, he turns, 2 3 unsuited. Sitting there thinking easiest win of my life. Cards go down on the table, 4 5 6 10 5. Straight, Out of the tourney. It was the big sad, by this point in the tourney 10 people were left, top 5 win money.

Same thing happened to me this week. I was chip leader and I got TT and a guy went all in with a medium stack with AQ. Flop was AA6 and it all went downhill from there.

I love your common sense suggestions on playing live poker. You articulate things I try to tell myself. Q. = I have a friend who has told me he loses less in 1-3 than he does in 1-2, when he loses. Should I encourage him to play 1-3 more often, since he seems to be more disciplined at 1-3?

I know this video is a few days old now, but the 1-2 uncapped game at the Golden Nugget after midnight was BY FAR the best I found. One thing I notice when I have a weak player to my immediate right, everyone else knows that player is weak as well. If the weak player opens to 15 or 20 and I three bet to 55 or 60 to isolate, very often I get re-raised to 150. I know the person who is four betting is often doing so lightly. You’ve probably already put one out and I haven’t seen it, but i’d like to see your thoughts on that scenario in a video.

I have a hard time with risk aversion. I get scared sometimes halfway through the hand and not play right. Then I start playing scared and lose(of course) . Any techniques to help with that? Thanks for your time and all you do!🙏🙏🙏

Realize that when you play suboptimally that you lose money. I presume you do not want to lose money, so don't make bad/nitty plays.

How many tournaments do you really need to play annually to balance out variance? (I understand it varies, but how often should you play as a side hustle I guess)

I love your content, Jonathan. Thank you for the videos. In relation to the short term variance, how much should a reasonable winner expect to take home per session, on average? 5bb/hr? When building a bankroll, that's 20 hours for a buy in, and we usually need to amass 100 buy ins at a level to double the buy in amount and be properly rolled for the next level. That's 2000 hours just to go from .05/.10 to .10/.20. Then another 2k hours to get to .25/.50. Literally years of grinding to move out of micro stakes. Is this accurate?

You could implement a more aggressive bankroll strategy as long as you're prepared to move back down in stakes, when you have 70-80 buy ins for the next stake try moving up, if you drop to 60 buy ins move back down, It's essential that you analyse your game honestly - if you move up and downswing 10-20 buy ins - is it variance or are you not prepared strategically for that level. Don't be afraid to take shots, you can be even more aggressive than above, as long as you put in the study and review your play objectively. Another thing to think about is finding your sweet spot with how many tables you play - if you 3 table for 7bb/hr(per table) but can five table for 5bb/hr or 10 table for 3bb/hr then obviously it makes sense to 10 table. Just my opinion, hope it helps, good luck on the felt.

I think you're overkilling on the buy-ins. I think even 20 buy-ins can be enough to take a shot at the next level as long as you're willing to move back down. You can also get well over 5bb/hr at microstakes if you're good.

Reason three is my issuez typically online poker.

My focus for the last couple years is to play more 5 card omaha.....much better game...more opportunities...more information to make good decisions.

Not bluffing enough was a big one for me

What's your opinion on showing bluffs? For example, you're perception is a nit...but you know that you're bluffing...and winning several of those post turn bluffs due to that perception. However, it feels/appears that players are now using that image to get after you pre-flop by coming over the top with 3x raises (or more) just to get you out of the hand. Those hands go to show-down with other players, and the pre-flop aggressor mucks, and 50% of the time was never strong pre-flop. This is at 1-2-5bba. Is this what you mean by volume and just believing that it will come back around and there will be times to crush these players, or is about just taking a swing once in awhile with (for example) an all-in over the top with 89suited?

Actually there is only 1. This 1 mistake is what makes players stay on low stakes: "they only play their cards" So many situations where I C-bet the flop with nothing and the opponent folds his high cards(because I know he missed the flop)

Unplayable and fold when u have good position good whole card scenarios please if u haven’t already….

I'd like you to do a video on whether you or not you think Americas cardroom is legit or not. I stopped playing on ACR in 2020 because It always seemed like there was something going on with the RNG and bots as well. I know you probably can't do a video like this without backlash. I think Betonline poker seems legit.

look up pre flop charts and you'll see an example. just know it runs from AA through A-2 (suited) across the top (left to right), and AA to A-2 offsuit from top to bottom. The diagonal down from top left to bottom right cell are all the pairs: AA, KK, QQ, etc down to 22. Then when you see it in his video, you at least have a good idea of what you're looking at.

@@PokerCoaching maybe? I'll play 10k hands against it and see where I sit but it seems pretty weak as far as bots go. I've played vs bots that I couldn't get ahead of. It was on Facebook for a very short period of time and no matter what I did this thing had my number every time. Pokersnowie you can rob all day long. You do have to keep in mind that you're up against a strong range. Occasionally, you'll run into quads. Happened twice yesterday to me.

So your saying there's a chance it's just bad luck...

most people lose as they play. people who do not play never lose.

Wise words last segment! My last game I was getting crushed, while playing my best. One hand I was dealt AK of diamonds. the flop was 4,5, 8 of diamonds...and a splashy player decided to rip it all in. I quickly called, feeling great and that I would finally win a massive pot, but of course I lose to a Straight flush. The variance is real. But I couldn't of played my hand any different, and I realize that the odds of someone beating me with a SF is extremely rare(but not impossible). If I played the same way with the same hand 100 times I'd win 99 times. Volume cures variance.

What’s more surprising is that a sf just ripped it on the flop

What happens when you are always favored when the money goes in and lose 95 percent of the time consistently.
