Liked your point about selective breeding. I know squat about animals, but I select seeds in my garden, and its crazy how much a variety can improve in just a few generations when you choose the right genetics.
I love Bear. He should have his own show.
Doe selection was the number hardest lesson we had to learn here. Culling hard is vital. And it is hard. We loved them all.
Low copper is one of the primary reasons for parasites. It's critical, though, to keep the goats that are parasite resistant. It's so hard to send on does that you love, but aren't really suitable for your breeding goals. I'd add that the #1 reason for chemical wormer failure is treating the entire herd instead of just the ones that need it. FAMACHA is imperative.

Are you saying you should only treat the ones infected, or that it is a mistake if you do?
@patriotsongs

@@cornpop6969 Treat the infected but don't keep them. Keep your herd strong and eventually you'll have a parasite resistant herd.
Good info! I’m glad Bear let you get through it. We have a nice small goat herd but last year all of our does aborted pretty further along. Vet said it was leptospirosis. He said it’s common in cows and in school they were taught that goats can’t get it but he swears they can. That was a very hard lesson learned. Anyway, this year produced several beautiful babies!
🤩 when you wake up and all your favorite homesteaders collab it's going to be a good day! Better to get along than fight, like some other homestead youtubers we all know!
I am just now getting around to watch everyone's & this was such an awesome collab! Thanks guys!!-Jason

Yes it was an all around good collab!
I agree with what you've said though I don't have a guard dog. They are in a good high pen at night and when it's raining. I was lucky as the doe I started with literally had her first two within five minutes, with no trouble.. She has passed the easy birthing on to her daughters who have passed it on to their daughters. Love my goats!
I am so glad your number one was responsible breeding that is not based on color or how fond you are of an animal. I absolutely agree that so many of our problems with popular breeds is simply irresponsible breeding.

You're a good Person! You love You're Dog and You're Goats!
That dark brown/light brown goat you pointed out as a pretty goat really is incredible, I was staring at it behind you and then you said what I was thinking, lol. Looks like ice cream!
I just watched Dutch. Thanks to him I found your channel. Subscribed and bell is rung. Put it out and I'll watch. Parasites... Round worm, hook worm, whip worm and tapeworm then, there are stongyloids. Bear is a blessing. Puppy love
Great Job. Heard about the collaboration from Living Traditions. Watch several of you videos and had to subscribe. Go Bear.
Really appreciate these tips! Perfect timing for us new goat owners! Thank you! 🐐

As long as your hand is on the dog, in his mind, you are petting him. He is being rewarded for pushing up on you like that. I think I read that in The Working Retriever. Great book, btw. Tom Quinn.

New to the channel we have a small goat herd (about 15) I have a few friends who also have goats and I know a few of us have had problems with fence, it could be in my top 5 mistakes I made when I was new to goats, a good goat fence, if there is such a thing, anyways love the channel, keep the good videos coming!!
Awesome video, could not agree with you anymore, we are having lots of problems with our boer goats.
Good work Bear! Keep protecting the livestock =) Thank you so much for the info, very enjoyable knowledge as I do plan on getting a few goats when I do eventually become a homesteader, so cheers. I was sent by Kevin & Sarah. Now subscribed to Bears channel lol..One
LOL!! The sound from your goats are hilarious!!! Love it!
Know thy land and what can and can't be raised.. We recently closed our goat business in North east texas. Wroms and vet care was to much. The land was to humid and wet and parasties killed 310 goats out of 425. We auctioned off the rest
Great info on goats. Great collaborations. As always great video. Bears awesome!
Hello from Kelly at Piney Haven Homestead. **HUGS & PRAYERS** Love your videos! I have chickens, dogs and cats, and horses. I want to add goats later, however I want dairy goats for soap making and cheese making. Keep up the great videos!

Couldn’t have said it better! Great info for people!
Wow. Look at that baby face😉. Thankyou Daniel for sharing your wisdom. I have been trying to get a couple goats since spring and have been scammed twice. I don’t know who to trust about getting them
Thank you, this is great info. Our guardian dog reminds me of Bear 😂 I live in California, but have family in Sulphur (my mom is from Reagan). We want to get 2 little pigmy or dwarf goats so doing research on how to keep them and then finding a reputable breeder. There are a lot of backyard breeders but they are breeding mostly meat goats and selling the kids for slaughter (very popular among the large Hispanic community in our area). We also want to keep chickens but they are hard to find here because of Newcastle and we have to buy them locally. 🐐 🐓 🐕
I thoroughly enjoy your goat videos. Thank you. Best wishes to you and your farm from beautiful Melbourne Australia with love.
Our goats get a pretty big area in the summer, but get closed up in a shed at night, and sometimes (depending on the pasture rotation) our two horses are in the pasture with the goats. Our two wethers (we have three goats, and will breed our doe hopefully) are tough little crappers. My wethers both have HUGE horns and definitely know how to use them.
@te7931

Goats, no matter how big they are or how big their horns cannot defend against wild dogs or coyotes, esp a mama coyote teaching her pups to hunt. You're following yourself on that. We've had a 379# Boer buck that was killed by roaming domesticated neighborhood dogs defending his girls. Do not do this. Get an Anatolian and save your friends. Smh.

Just noticed that my "smart" phone changed Hambone to Jawbone. I was referring to his photo bombing nature. Wow, I've never seen an Anatolian that sweet. Must be the mix.

Your title sequence is super cute but everyone else is smiling at the end and you and Houston are all GAME FACE, YO!! LOL Thank you for this video. I hope to get goats soon and this information is invaluable.

Daniel, I’m trying to sell my registered Boer buck and thinking about replacing him with a Kiko buck. I just can’t make myself do it but you Kiko herdsmen are making me think for sure.
I love your dog bear :) he is such a sweetheart and he looks so proud all the time I love it :)
I guess Bear thinks you're talking to him... cuz noone else is around in his mind! :) I bet what he's thinking is... "Idk what you're saying to me.... BUT I LOVE YOU!"
Omg BEAR!!😍 what a dream boat Hahaha. Nothing but love and appreciation for you!

Dang! That's too bad! Did you keep minerals in with them, and/or a salt block? I just automatically put a good strong wire barrier between the goats and the trees, as i didn't want to lose the trees.

Great video!
Yeah I think I am done boar goats I lost my share to worms this year I think I am going to try to stick with the kikos we had very wet it hasn't been goat friendly but I think we are over but I like your in put
Glad to see your doing the collaboration this year. I had goats a few times but your right about the Boars goats. They are so stocky and a beautiful goat, but you have to worm them. We have non-climbing horse wire across the front of our property, but most of it is barb wire. Wished we were younger I would love to fence the barb wire with non-climbing horse wire and get some goats. There are weeds that the cows will not eat that the goats will plus I love goats. Anyone new to goats that want to raise goats find someone that has goats. See if they will answer questions and help you get started. Most people that have livestock is more than willing to help newcomers get started.

@@whyistheworldsowicked It depends on the breed of goats. Some like the Boar goats need to be wormed more than the Kiko like Daniel has. He has some videos he made explaining the care of goats including worming.
Bear is so Awesome! what a beautiful boy!
Bear is a lovable character
Love seeing Houston and Bear
it seems that when you focus on the camera and talk, Bear starts to think, “hey buddy, I want attention too!!” 😂😂
Love your dog!
very informative, thanks
I raise Boer goats in Alaska, I love the breed. I have been very fortunate and have had good stock. I have found for us breeding for spring kids is healthier for the kids. Winter can be tough on those little ones and there is nothing cuter than a batch of spring kids jumping all over the yard. We have a Border collie that runs the yard and keeps the bears and other predators away. Worming is on an individual case, usually spring thaw and fall freeze. Sometimes I get an animal that needs a little more. Selenium is a biggy our soil is so depleted. So they get a dose before breeding and before kidding so those babies are strong to start. Thanks for sharing how it's done on your farm. I do agree that you need to cull heavy to make the breed strong. plus have a great buck "always breed up".
@truth9547
Жыл бұрын
We just joined a 4H group in our neighborhood and that's how they do it. Every spring there's a bunch of babies born and people are buying their show goats. Winter weather isn't an issue for the babies at all.
Thank you so much 😊
Hi Daniel. Good info on goats. We're looking at building a flock in the near future. I have been looking at Kiko goats in the Philippines. So far they are seem to be few and far between. Lots of Nubians and Boers but I'll continue searching. My wife's family has a few goats but not so much for building a herd. They are mostly for fiesta and celebration dinner. I make a pretty mean goat curry by the way. OK, so I jumped on here to say why don't you make a Bearumentary? He is an awesome dog. He has so much love for you and takes pride in his herd. The game camera photo of him leading the goats was very cool. Thanks for the great content. We love watching. It keeps us in the farm mood while we're overseas in Europe. Cheers, ~Mike and Ester~
Bear: "Yes. I'm good boy"
Bear: "Hmm...I think I should have my OWN KZread channel."

Great video and thank you for the awesome info. What breed is Bear, he looks similar to my Louisiana Catahoula?
