Around 1972 my dad bought me a Browning bar in 30-06 to deer hunt in Mississippi, when I was in Jr College. I brought it home and a good friend started teaching me to reload for it. He picked the Sierra 165gr HPBT. I have been hunting with it ever since. We picked 4895 IMR and use 46 gr. I have had one shot kills on SC whitetails over the years, one dropped in his tracks and didn’t move. I shot one buck at over 100 yards over a soybean field. He was facing me and the bullet entered his right shoulder, traveled down the right side, broke two ribs, crossed over and stopped under the skin on his left hip. We recovered some core lead and most of the jacket material. On deer hit from the side we got an exit wound and no bullet. This bullet has performed well for at the relatively short ranges here in SC, I don’t know what it does at longer ranges.

I'd say you nailed it. I am a 30-06 guy and I have done plenty of testing on my own and I agree with your take. I especially agree with the 130 TTSX.

I disagree with the 130 for the 30-06. You’d get very similar impact velocity at 500 yards with a 150 or 168 ttsx, but with at least a couple hundred more ft lbs of energy. I don’t see any advantage of the 130 except maybe additional muzzle and close range velocity.

I agree. I am not considering the 130gr at 500 yards. At 500, a heavier bullet with higher BC and retained weight is more ideal. I view the 130gr for ranges to 400 max

Most data I see has that 130 grain going just as fast out of the 308 Winchester. I’m carrying it in my lightweight mountain rifle. Jury is still out on it for me. Only 1 animal down.

​@@phild9813What your missing is the expansion on the 150ttsx is poor even at 300 as its designed to open at winag speeds, at 500 its just going to behave as a FMJ. Energy, weight all pointless if your just goimg to pencil through. Kinds the whole point of this channel, to show people real work results at range when it comes to expansion. A 130 has the velocity to expand well at 300y A 150g doesnt, regardless how much energy paper says your bullet is carrying The 165 cx opens alot morw than the 150ttsx, as its designed to open at 3006 velocities. Barnes 150ttsx is the toughest barnes bullet. And thats not a good thing out of a standard cartridge, in a 300win doing 3350fps thats a different story

For putting deer on the ground right now, the 165g Speer btsp and the Hornady 165g Flat base are just beyond awesome, 57g of IMR 4350 in Spades!

Same powder and amount, just with a nosler balistic tip 165. Accurate, and less bloodshot than a 150gr. Longest shots 200 and 220yd, deer don't go far. Most others are closer than 200.

Trying to find the 165g Nosler is all but impossible. I have switched to the Speer 165g BTSP and for a for a tougher bullet, the 165g Hot Core flat base.@@daye8132

I bought some 300 WSM. Hand loads with 165 speer hot cor bullets, I knew nothing about these bullets, I'm glad that you like them.

I've gotten really good results on western black bear using the 175 Barnes LRX out of my 22" 30-06 I'm getting 2750fps and it's done really well out to 200 yards. I haven't gotten a chance to push it farther than that but I think it would do really well out to 350 yards maybe even 400 yards at higher elevation where I hunt with this rifle. But that rifle is just under 11lbs and I'm thinking about getting something that's in the 7lbs range in 308 for longer hunts when I have to take more food. So I've been looking at using that 130 TTSX for that setup. This is the rabbit hole that brought me to your channel. I like what you have to say so far. Just found your channel tonight and I enjoy the thoroughness of the content. 30-06 sprg is my fav cartridge to reload. I can cover every single game species in Northern Canada( NWT). Big fan of the Partition, Accubond and TSX & TTSX. Moose get the 180gr medicine unless its the TTSX, where I feel comfortable taking with either the 165 or 168gr as I'll never take a shot past 350/400 with the set up I currently run. Been doing some load dev with the 190gr Nosler ABLR and also have 200 gr AB just in case I feel like going for one of our wood Bison if not then i'll just use my 180gr TTSX load. My data so far, really indicates the -06 shines very brightly in the 165/168 gr weight class in terms of accuracy and velocity numbers for the distances I shoot. I would really like if the Speer line of bullets( hotcore, btsp & grandslam) would shoot to my expectations out of my rifle but i havent been able to achieve that in any of my devolopement. I do use the 150gr BTSP with win760, WLR and win brass as my fouling round though with a min charge and it does shoot about 1MOA but ill only load temp stable powders for my hunting ammuniton.

Awesome video . I've always been and always will be a Nosler fan. Partition and Accubond are hard to beat . Surely theres probably better but those 2 bullets have never let me down .

Good video. I hunt mostly with a 30-06 or 300WSM and for both those guns I like the Barnes 168gr TSX and 180gr Norma BondStrike and 139gr Norma EvoStrike

If y'all revisit this, give a 180 grain Swift Scirocco a try over IMR4350. Great BC & 1 MOA accuracy. Even at a modest 2,600fps out of a 22" barrel it has been stellar on game, from warthog to wildebeest in Africa, plus whitetail & elk in the States. Penetration & weight retention have been outstanding, even on the chonky wildebeest. The only drawback has been Scirocco's limited availability. .02

I have a kimber with a 26” barrel. I use the 180 sirroco over IMR 4350. I get 2830 and 1/2” groups. Just stellar !!😀

I use to shoot the 150 grain hot core bullets in 30-06 it was very accurate in my old rifle with imr 4064 powder I had Hornady frontier cases and Remington standard rifle primers

I've only shot deer with my 30-06. I'm a big fan of the lighter bullets for longer mpbr. My 3 favorite are cup/core, factory 154 gr. Browning bxr. Bonded, reload 125gr accubond with varget. And monolithic, 120 grain barns tac-tx with reloader 15.

I use 150 gr. Barnes TTSX in factory ammo in my Remington 700 in .30-06. I have gotten really good accuracy and outstanding terminal performance. I would love to try the 130 gr. TTSX, but I am not currently a handloader. Thanks for the great content.

​​@@frontlinerejects8029some stock 30-06 rifles have 1/9" twist. So you can run 220 + grain bullets. If you trust your range finder, this is a fantastic strategy for heavy animals, up to maybe 1000 pounds. I wouldn't take it to Kodiak, but I would run it anywhere else in Alaska where there aren't 1000 pound bears. Inland bears aren't really above 900 pounds. And most are much lighter than that.

165 nosler partition at around 2900 fps is deadly on anything

I really like the 150 grain Winchester super x copper hollow points, they have been my go too for years. They were very accurate and dropped deer instantly. They stopped making and replaced them with a plastic tipped copper bullet and they didn't shoot well so im making the switch to 150 grain barnes ttsx. They grouped well at 100 yards and the poi was nearly identical

Thanks for the awesome video. Next season I'll be trying Lehigh Defense's Controlled Chaos bullet. From what I understand, these bullets do their thing with less velocity than the monolithic bullets from Barnes or Hornady. However, I'm not knocking Barnes or Hornady, as they make excellent bullets, and I have a bunch of them.

🎯 Another fun test to do is with the 270 Winchester (See Nosler #9 Online Reloading Manual), using a 110 grain bullet in the Nosler Accubond bullet and TTSX bullet (2 of Your favorites)! Using Norma 204 powder and sighing in (zeroed) at 350 yards, they will have a +/- 4.9" and +/- 4.5" drop, respectively, out to 400 yards and only drop 15" at 500 yards (Because the Muzzle Velocity is 3,500 ft/s)! Now that is FLAT and FAST for a Non-Magnum caliber and a Very Good Deer and Antelope Load! 🔥

Did you try any of the heavier barns bullets out . 175 or such ?

I have reloaded for the 30-06 for many years and have hunted both deer and elk with it. None of the elk I have ever harvested have ever had the bullet still in the animal. From 150 to 180 grain bullets they all pass through an elk even if I hit bone. Through experience I don't use 150 grain bullets in the 30-06 because I consider it light for caliber. I have other rifles that shoot 150 grain bullets great. I don't use larger than 180 grain for my 30-06 because I have a .35 Whelen for heavier bullets from a 30-06 size case with much better efficiency.

168 grain ttsx , 175 LRX are my go to bullets . I also used 212 grain ELDX once and they were ok too

Do you have any plans on testing the Berger hunting bullets? I can find them locally but not sure on the results. Hunt elk and moose

Very good explanation on different bullets from the 06. I use my 06 on deer and load the 150ttsx. Can easily get 3000fps and they grop under 1moa . My shots are under 300 metres. Would like to try some accubond but just can't get them in canada.

Thanks for the bringing us the information, 30.06 seems to be fading as an option from gun manufactures but it is still, I would argue the best all around hunting cartridge. Agree on Barnes 130 TTSX, a favorite for my 308 Winchester, it really holds together on game. Never considered the 130gr for Elk. Have you guys considered testing any of the new PRC cartridges?

Great video. A little bit for everyone. Nice bullet weights for the cartridge. I always thought the lighter bullets were better suited to the 30-06 than the heavier (180s) ones.

I dont have a 30-06 but a 308 win & 300 win mag. My picks for hunting projectiles are 175LRX & 190gr accubond LR. Due to high b.c. and slightly lower expanding velocity of these two (vs accubond & ttsx) they retain enough velocity to have around 200-400f/s impact above claimed minimum even in 308. Max distances the 308 (350ish) and 300 win mag (400 ish) with excellent wind deflection. If i want more explosive, i use berger 180 elite hunter. If i didnt mind keeping all different bullets on hand and their cost, i would get the 168 accubondLR for the 308. I used to have way too many different bullets on hand got rid of a whole bunch in the intrest of keeping less (space and cost) using the same bullets in different 30 cals. They were my picks for 308 & 300 win combined. My light 30 cal bullet is 130gr woodleigh weldcore.

The best hunting bullet I've used in any cartridge is the Hornady Interbond. I can consistently push them faster with better accuracy than other bullets and they perform well on game of all sizes at various distances. I've always wished Hornady would market and produce them more. If you can find some, I highly recommend giving them a try.

I would absolutely love to. In the last 2 years I have not once found them in stock, I may have a bead finally on some 165 grainers but we will see if it pans out. I've heard a lot of good things about the interbond!

Have you tested the cavity back bullets

180 grain Sierra flatbase Pro Hunter was my favorite 30-06 bullet but is discontinue. I will test the Speer 180 Hot Core and the 180 Hornady Inter lock. I like the 180gr Bullet for the 06 becase it is less explosive than the lighter bullets. One just as well have a 308 Winchester if shooting lighter bullets in the 06. Just my opine.

All three of the deer that I have taken with my .30-06 were taken with the following load: Brass = Federal Primer = CCI 200 Powder = 57 grains IMR 4831 Bullet = 165 grain Barnes TTSX My COAL is 3.307" for max accuracy in my Ruger M77 and 3.360" in my Winchester model 70 Classic Featherweight.

You guys should test the federal power shok as its used by thousands of hunter’s a year from everything from prairie dogs to moose

Excellent content. Finally somebody besides Ron Spomer bringing up MPBR. What's your take on HotCor vs Grand Slam? I've got a bunch of the latter in 180 gr loaded up for my son's 308W, coming out at about 2550 or so. Where we hunt, there aren't even very many shots as far as 100 yards, mostly around 40-60 yards.

Run 208 grain if you are super close and want more whack......inside 200 yards and not using a range finder they are great.

I have a .308 but I think the 30-06 results would apply to this. But it would be great to see some results for a 25-06 or similar enough to that calibre to get a good comparison. Especially interested in the copper bullets.

The new Winchester "Deer Season" is a mono with a big fat plastic tip. It opens immediately.

One thing i like about the 30-06 its not a barrel burner like newer cartridges barrel life is supposed to be twice as long

That's a situationally dependent question. No one answer will be right for everyone, but generally speaking a bonded design will do much of what most people need to do.

Good Video! I know you tested the Barnes TSX in the .308 on your channel. With the slightly higher velocities of the .30-06, would you say it is a good performer inside of 300 yards? I'm hoping to get some TTSX's when I get reloading equipment at some point but the TSX's are what I have right now loaded by Federal Premium and are 165 grains.

I'm going to Chronograph it when the weather gets a little better. I was told by others I need to be greater than 2200 FPS at the target to get good terminal results with the standard TSX's. >2000 FPS for the TTSX's. Would you agree with that assessment?

@@Jonnydeerhunter 1900-2000 is a good floor for most copper bullets (except nosler since those are tougher). The factory federal 165 tsx is labeled at 2800, which is isn’t bad, but again, depending on weather and altitude, will shorten your range a hair. Looking at Federal’s ballistic calculator, 59 degrees at sea level you should be good to 300 yards.

I wish you tested 168 ttsx . It is a different design than 165 ttsx

Interesting, I have just completed a ladder test for ADI2209 with H 150gr SST a grain under book max is 3260fps . I am using this projectile as load development as it produces too much meat damage . Barns has a 150gr .30 why was thus left out ?

You should watch videos made by GunBlue490 about velocity and sectional density. He has educated me and I have been hand loading for many years. Velocity is not the best thing out there. There is a sweet spot when it comes to capillary damage and it has to do with the sectional density and velocity. Most ammo the sweet spot is between 2700 fps and 2900 fps and for deer size game a sectional density of .240 or better and for elk a sectional density of .270 even though I've harvested the two largest elk I ever shot with .284 diameter bullets with a sectional density of .240 and a velocity of about 2800 fps. Good pass through and minimal meat damage with an elk dead on the spot.

And if Driven speeds are in the 3200fps for the 150 without cooking the book the MPBR will be even longer , it will have an edge over the 130. I have just orded 150gr copper outer edge projectiles and am keen to see how they preform on paper and then in the field . I was a tad surprised when i did my ladder test of the speeds I was getting , since the Fed factory load is a measured 2900fps . Interesting to note on subsequent node testing I returned not data as the hand load at 3260fps printed 7'' high as opposed to the factory loads at 3.5'' at 115yrs (100m)

If you want to get the best the 7mm mag. has to offer then use the heaviest bullet you can buy for it. At least 175 grain. This is the reason to own a magnum rifle. If you want to get the job done every time send mass.

I tried the 175 round nose and it hits like a MAC truck. It’s what I would definitely use if I was going after grizzly bears. But I still think the 160 is the best balance for the 7mag.

160 Grain Nosler accubond and the 7mm make a great pair. or a 175 Partition, the accubond just makes a better slug at distance. The 155 Federal TA would be another great one. 160 A Frame certainly will do the number.

I really do like 165s for . 30-06. I also like cheap and effective. Speer Hot Cor and Hornady Interlock. If I ever need more bullet there is always 180s (and even 200s in Hot-Cor) There are bullets engineered way beyond anything I would ever need or need to pay for just to squeeze the final drop of capability out of a . 30-06. If a Nosler Partition bullet is not enough performance in .30-06 in one of the various weights, what you need is a bigger than .30 caliber.

Great list in my opinion my three favorite 1. 168 gr Barnes ttsx 2. 180 gr nosler accubond 3. 180 gr swift a frame I have the Barnes at #1 simply because of the price of the ammo Nolser would probably be no 1 if they weren’t 80$ a box of ammo And lastly the swift a frame might be the best out of these three but they are so hard to find nowadays So what I’m saying is that these are all tied for my # bullet for 30-06

🦏 The Swift A-Frame is my favorite elk bullet and I would like to see you test that next! Their is a reason why it is so popular in Africa, as a Dangerous Game Bullet! 🐃 The last elk I took (a 7x7 330" bull) I killed with 1 shot at 450 yards with my 270 Winchester and a 150 grain Swift A-Frame bullet! I dropped him right in his tracks too! 🎯 Though I own a 30-06, it is the 270 Winchester that is my favorite rifle! 🥇

I totally agree that the Swift Aframe is an awesome bullet. I used the 160 in my 7mm mag in the 2022 season I took a 170 class Whitetail at 94 yards took out the top of both lungs just missed the heart but 1/2 inch hit a rib out With just a nickel sized exit hole. The buck never went 20 yards Two days later I took a mule doe at 250 same shot placement top of both lungs just above the heart with the exact result . Again not going 20 yards. Absolutely no blood shot meat loss . Hopefully I can get a chance to see what the 160 Aframe will do on an Elk and Moose this season. Cheers

🕵️‍♂️ The difference between the Bonded Swift A-Frame and the Non-Bonded Nosler Partition - regarding penetration - is that the Nosler Partition usually will be found on the back side of the elk in the hide (often experiencing core-jacket seperation and significant weight loss), while the Swift A-Frame bullet will punch completely through the elk and collapse the lungs (also, creating a blood trail)! Everyone that I have ever recovered in the snow has a classic textbook mushroom and 90+% weight retention! I think it is the ultimate "Big Game" bullet for tough critters! 💪 The African Guides and Professional Hunters Would All Pretty Much Agree With Me Too! 🤑

Thought bullet coefficient is important it’s not everything. The Aframe is not the highest it’s performance is exceptional on big game. My 40 year old Remington 700 In 7mag prints a sub 3/4 inch group at 100 yards with the 160 Aframe Whitch is great for a hunting rifle

I heard the bc on the ACLR is extremely exaggerated. I was told that a ballistic calculator won’t work with them ether because of the incorrect bc numbers don’t match up.

I run the same set up. I run norma 180😮 bondstrike or the 150 soft points. But my x bolt really liked 165 seirra tipped game king. Less then .5 moa. All three have awesome terminal on deer good luck!

180 grain ballistic tips drops a white tail in his tracks one shot heart shots at ranges from 50 to 450 yards found the bullet in the hide on the opposite side of impact no suffering clean wound

I don't believe hornady specs. As you said they prematurely "blow up." Lots of online complaining their specs are 5% weaker then advertised. Good pick for nosler. However 165gr accubond by nosler is better then your pick. Hits with 1505 foot pounds at 500 yards! That's impressive power! I like your picks like the terminal ascent. I'll have to shoot more to see which ones I really like. Or more importantly which one my rifle likes

Get you a few boxes of Federal Fusion and call it good. That’s the best you can get for hunting. If not, go with Remington Core Lokt.

I usually reload my 30-06 rounds with 180 grain FMJs, and they achieve a muzzle velocity of 2,800 ft/s out of a 26 inch barrel.

@russellkeeling4387 FMJs have a better BC, and no I don't use them for hunting, I use them for shooting steel at long range.

Barrel length 24' or 24"? (Feet or inches?) And correctly- "24, not 24". As a reloader I insist on precision in information. Otherwise, your list is good. My o3 -A3 likes 150 gr. bullets, and especially Barnes bullets.

Nosler needs to expand there production capabilities, you can never find Nosler bullets.

In 30-06 For shots exceeding 400+ yds amd beyond the monolithic 210 grain accubond long ramge .G1 BC of 661 is hard to beat at a mv. Of only 2600 fps .it hits like a hammer at 600 yds with 1522 ft lbs of retained energy and expamds well down to 1300 fps and holds together well.. ..much less wind deflection and bullet drop than lighter bullets amd far more energy upon impact at extemded 400+ yd ramges .

@Echo Foxtrot Whiskey Doesnt Really doesn't matter if it's monolithic or not anyway .. .as .the true best all around bullets for extended hunting distamces in 30-06 are the VLD style long range heavies not the light weight bullets .190 -210 ABLR both pack enough punch for all north American big game up to and including moose out to 600 yds ..they perform flawlessly at lower 30-06 vs magnum velocities for close and long range bug game .

I would think your Tikka 30-06 is a real kicker. Is it?

It's not bad, especially when running a lighter bullet in the 130 class, I am considering having it threaded for a break though.

@@frontlinerejects8029 Barrel is knda thin for that, maybe? Gotta becareful and have a good g smith. On my wife's Tikka 308, we changed out to a better recoil pad. Helped. Tikka are very nice.

@@jamesmooney5348 I've spoken to a couple different gunsmiths, outer diameter at the muzzle is 0.632 and all but one of them were on board with the idea of threading to 1/2 x 28 which is what I need for the Weatherby Accubrake I intend on using. Good suggestion on changing out the recoil pad, I probably should look into that.

We've been having some issues with copyright strikes related to it (even though it was written in 1917) so we left it out of just this video to test some stuff with the algorithm.

Valdez Alaska here. I’ve never used anything but a 30-06 on caribou, moose and black bear.I don’t hunt brown bear but I would use it oh them as well if I did. I’ve got a 300 win mag and I love the caliber but all the animals I’ve harvested were just as dead with a 30-06 as with a 300 win mag. My Begara 30-06 is my go to rifle and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

All of these cheap garbage lead core bullets the hunter is going to be feeding the coyotes allot of wasted blood shot up meat, Years ago, before I switched over to Barns bullets and shooting Roosevelt Elk and Black tail deer, I was shooting many kinds of these brand name cheap garbage lead core bullets with an expected loss of at least 1/4 of the animal and 1/2 the time blood shot damage was so bad the full front half of the Elk was left for the coyotes. The next expected problem was due to these cheap garbage lead core bullets fragmenting it took multipole bullets to bring down Elk which is never the case shooting a Barns TSX bullet. And when eating an Elk Roast - steaks or burger the meat was loaded with health hazard lead particles and shredded copper I cut my inner gum on. Shooting cheap garbage lead core bullets from a 7 mm Rem mag and 300 Wby mag or 338-win mag none of the garbage lead core bullets can stay together.
