Amazing list, one of the best lineups I have seen for the genre, I am probably only missing FTL and original desktop dungeons here, and maybe Ring of Pain (to a less degree), but its truly very solid overall. I'd love more points on what make the games better than others in the genre and worth the try. Banners of ruin and Wildfrost are probably the only two that are probably overrated for appearing here (they kinda died pretty fast, same as roguebook). Also an honorary mention goes to the grandfather that inspired Slay the spire in the first place. Dream Quest!! Its still amazing regardless of looking so simple in graphics! Still a great game and the most huge inspiration out of them all!

Man I am now 40 and have just discovered turn based games and I have to say its both fun and holy crap and fairly challenging. When I say challenging its cause I haven't tried the genre. Was use to Baldurs gate 1 and 2 and Icewind Dale 1 and 2 and I am now kinda spreading my wings a bit.

For me , this is a one game list with Slay the Spire in it. Endless replayability and easily the hardest and most demanding of the bunch. Next to purchase will be the last spell, if it ever goes on sale Probably additional honorable mentions can go to Roguebook and FTL itself, another roguelike grandaddy. Going on another discovery tour in the Sunless sea, back in 60 hours or so...

Although I don't like losing a character, I really liked Darkest Dungeon (you must learn what to expect in the dungeon before going so you can prepare a good run with enough materials). I really liked the added new families in Monster Train and all the conmbinations encouraged me to do more runs. Slay the Spire was ok...too hard for my taste after some updates... Banners of Ruin was a big no for me. I tried but I could not enjoy it. Loop Hero was good but too repetitive and grindy. Griftlands is a masterpiece. I'm still playing it (again, going back to it regularly) and love the relations you make with the npc you encouter to make them your friends/allies or ennemies and all this results in gameplay mechanics. This "little" aspect give this roguelike more roleplay than the so called "rpg"s. Also the stories are really entertaining and that's coming from someone who "skip" the dialogues or who grumbles when there are too much dialogue and only wants to play a quick game. I had fun with Wildfrost demo. It's still on my wishlist /blush. Backpack Hero is fun and original :) Here a little more from my list : - The dungeon beneath : autobattler though but good race synergies. - Forward : escape the fold - quick games and simple - Legend of Keepers : how could you forget this one :P - Monster Slayers : don't let the art style fool you it's a great game. - Nowhere Prophet : the caravan stuff is original (your troops die if they are defeated twice unless you let them rest) - Overfall : nice tactical roguelike and many elements/secrets to unlock and many many random events.

This seem like a list from ChatGPT. First most of this seem like a google or IGN article. There literally is 0 personal opinion (we cant even tell if you played the games). Also having start renegade on this list in 2023 kinda proves that. The game was great when it came out but the dev due to reasons dropped the game. No updated. The bugs in game are still there and many of them are game breaking. DLC promised never happened. Overall, with so many other games like tainted grail, inkbound, and other shoudlnt be there. Either way like I said usually some personal opinion of your experience would go a long way.

Retry, retry and retry again for some random event to trash your "progress" is the worst game mechanic in my opinion. It is boring and totally non-immersive. Why people like it?

  • @herotalib9556

Its a genre. Why do people like horror movies? Why do people like documentaries? Why do people like comedy? Some people like the aspect of risk and reward with a little bit of luck. Also most of these games once you learn how they work you literally can get close to 100% win rate. Then again you seem like a Cry more type of dude.
