Kmart was on life support since 2002 after they filed for bankruptcy. The executives were just milking the company. I worked in kmart and sears for a few years. In 2018, when sears filed for bankruptcy the executives gave themselves a 25 million bonus lol. They've all known it's been dying, so they are just paying themselves as much as they can. I only feel bad for the employees that had to work there. I worked with a lot of good people when i worked there.

I was surprised there was no mention of Sears after you mentioned Kmart. I was sad to lose both of them. I was shocked you never mentioned Woolworth's, they were around practically forever, and Border's went bye-bye because they refused to adapt to the internet and then only sold their books through Amazon. Also, I really miss Laneco. I haven't seen them since the 90's, but they sold just about everything Walmart style before Walmart was the place to go for that, but the stores were at least half the size.

Surprised Value City Furniture didn't make the cut. It was founded in 1991 and until 2008, was a pretty big retail furniture chain. They filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and announced they would close all locations by the early 2010's. But here's the kicker, they're still around. In fact, most locations have since reopened. They made some kind of comeback but I don't know. Saw a commercial earlier this year and thought "They're still around?!". So yeah, they had some kind of revival even though bigger chains like Ashley Furniture, Big Lots and La-Z-Boy are still around and thriving.

I worked at Zany Brainy right after high school, and we had so much fun working there. For years after myself and the rest of my coworkers talked about how much fun we used to have while working there, and that we would've gladly gone back to work part-time. We used to have some pretty wild parties every weekend, and it pretty much formed how I thought retail should be. At the time we called it the Nordstrom of toy stores.

Interestingly, at one time Retail Ventures owned Filene's Basement. Retail Ventures incorporated Schottenstein's/Value City Stores (a Columbus OH based off-price retailer that began in 1916), American Eagle Outfitters and DSW (a major shoe retailer). Ultimately Schottenstein's South (the original store I worked at) closed in March 2, 2005 along with two VC/Grampa's locations in St. Louis, then the rest of the chain closed in Dec. 2008. Hilariously, Retail ventures itself was folded into DSW in 2011. I knew a woman who ran Schottenstein's South's shoe department. She had come to us via the DSW merger and I think if she were still alive, she'd have had a hearty laugh to find DSW is the "last man standing", so to speak.

{ I'm watching from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺 } There used to be where I live/lived a Chinese owned grocery company store called Franklins and then in the mid 90s they expanded into premium fresh produce to compete with Woolworths Australia calling their subsidiary store Franklins Big Fresh . That secondary grocery store was an attempt at combining the grocery shopping experience with a theme park experience ( for the kids ) . Both stores no longer exist ( in Australia ) and haven't for a very long time . ♑️✍️🇸🇯

my sister worked as a server for a Zellers restaurant when Zellers shut down most of their stores. on their last day they gave out free meals to anyone who came in to eat. at first, they only did it for the old man who came in EVERY day but then the restaurant manager decided to make it a thing for anyone/everyone to try and empty out their food inventory instead of it going to waste. word got around and people flocked there. the food there was so good. the same kind of food/meals you can get at a mom and pop restaurant/chip stand. the best kind of food that puts 5 star restaurants to shame. their tips were mad crazy that day. food trucks also have amazing food

Sad our Mall had folded yrs ago and I'll never forget taking my last walk through, although memories fluttered, I will never forget that sadness that suddenly came over me. This place I spent shopping and meeting friends and all the great times with my nana, soon to be demolished within minutes. America, I seen and enjoyed its growth, now days this country just keeps falling and I don't see it getting back up! I hate this Millennium generation.. Circle of life isn't pleasurable!

Many of these stores made many of the same mistakes.. which are not a surprise at all. Waldonbooks and B. Dalton introduced me to Dungeons & Dragons... and I will never forget them for that.

I'm surprised I didn't hear Woolworth's in here, B. Dalton or Sports Authority. Here in St. Louis May Department Stores owned high-end Famous-Barr and discount chain Venture, which was very similar to Target.

I worked at a Movie Gallery in 2002, at that time they had started to offer DVD rentals along with the regular VHS. I had been going to that store for many years already, back when it was a Front Row Video. Along with Home Vision and Sounds Easy, all three were bought up by the MG company. Like this video said, they went under in 2010. And then so did Blockbuster in 2013!

Shuttering Lord and Taylor is effectively erasing history. The online store now doesn't count as part of its predecessor. These stores need to reopen in a manner that maintains connections to their past. Also, Ludwig von Beethoven was alive when Lord and Taylor began.

Man, you don't realize what these videos will do to you by just the thumbnails and descriptions, but once you start watching them the nostalgia flood gates open wide, don't they? It was sad to watch a lot of these stores die too, but that's the price we pay (no pun intended) for starting online shopping. As for personal requests, I'm surprised that you never mentioned Service Merchandise. It was apretty nice store with a decent toy section for younger me and mom enjoyed browsing their jewelry department. Best of all, everything was marked with reasonable prices. I also remember the conveyer line at the front of the store, behind the front counter, with boxed goods coming down from the upper level and trying to peek up there in my childhood wonder to find out where all of those boxes were coming from. * sigh * Good memories.
