Top 20 Highest Rated Film Noir of 1940 to 1942

Фильм және анимация

Film noir, noted for its dark visual style, takes place primarily, but not exclusively, within the generic complex of the American crime film of the forties and fifties. The term was first introduced by French cineaste Nino Frank in 1946. Here is a selection of some of the best film noir released in the years 1940 to 1942. Total ratings for the 20 films = 145 (out of 200) an average of 7.25 out of 10. Three books were useful when selecting films for this video series - "Dark City - Film Noir" by Spencer Selby, "Film Noir Guide" by Michael F. Keaney, and "Film Noir - An Encyclopedic Reference to the American Style" by Alain Silver and Elizabeth Ward.
Ratings Average sources include IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, Radio Times, FilmAffinity, Letterboxd, TMDB, Videohound, Maltin's Movie Guide and Halliwell's Film Guide.

Amazing to me is how many movies with top ratings from the late 30s through the 50s that Ida Lupino starred in. She deserves mountains of respect!

Film noir, ha! The genre I am so drawn to it, despite having seen a lot of mediocre noirs. But every time I start a new one with a longing hope to discover some forgotten masterpice... Let's make a count: I've watched everything from 11th place to No. 1 + 13th, 14th, 16th & 17th. Top 5 are really good example of the genre and The Letter has a special place in my heart. Bette Davis, Gale Sondergaard, Victor Sen Yung, William Wyler's direction, the cinematography, the athmosphere of doom, the concealed lust, the shadows and the hot sticky weather of the equator, it is all so superb, melodramatic and yet superb. I always love seeing Bette Davis when she play strong-willed, but awful characters. Her Regina in The Litte Foxes is also marvellous.

You've seen more noir here than I have. I've seen 6 from the top 7 on the video. Have to confess I haven't seen 'The Letter', it's on my to watch list. More videos next week.

There are 6 here I know I've watched for sure, similar to your list except I don't think I've seen I Wake Up Screaming. But I have seen High Sierra, Bogart on his way to the top.

Chaning the subject? I hope it is well received. Film noir fans are everywhere...so it is a good subject to explore. I have not seen as many of these as I would have guessed.....my tally is at 6. Favorites would include This Gun For Hire and Rebecca. Rebecca is one of WoC's favorites. Good stuff. Voted up.

Hi Bruce, someone suggested film noir as my next topic and here it is. Being a Hitchcock fan Rebecca is a big favorite of mine, The Maltese Falcon is up there too. Thanks again for the vote and comment, much appreciated.
