The sound department of the C64 Arkanoid simply wipes the floor with the arcade. Martin G's synth music and echoing metallic sound effects are magical.

Me again, Judge and Jury. It was a tense video for me again. If number 1 wasn't Bubble Bobble, I was going to to flip the table and unsubscribe again. You did not disappoint! My 2nd would've been Gauntlet, I totally get Commando and Ghost and Goblins but both games were a little too hard in the arcade for me to really get into, so they wouldn't have made it so high on my list. But I get it though, both are iconic on the C64, both of which I also thought too hard on the C64 for my little hand back then. Like aged wine, both are getting more love from me as the years go by. I too like Bubble Bobble on the C64 more than the one on the Amiga but Rainbow Island on the Amiga was the bomb when it came to arcade conversions on the Amiga. Here is another insight: Bubble Bobble is the first game I play on almost every platform and by far the best version ever is the one on the Sega Saturn, totally worth checking out, it is better than arcade perfect.

After going through your back catalogue to this point this has to be my favourite video of yours. My real love was the arcades of the 80s and the C64 so this is a dream video for me. Packed full of information as always, the quality of games on show was outstanding. My friend and fellow KZreadr at 20thcenturygaming Mark has just completed a no cheat longplay of Ghosts n Goblins arcade version on the C64 to go along with his other achievements, check it out it's superb skills. A truly remarkable conversation and probably the best technical achievement by any coding crew. On a final note there's surely room for another Arcade to C64 video conversion to add to this, so many fantastic games like the recent C64 Frogger? Outstanding production Brendan 👍

I have a few too many bad memories of Ghosts n' Goblins bursting into flickering and slowdown while I was trying to make precise jumps to think of it fondly. Bubble Bobble is a different matter, though; however they got all those bubbles on screen along with the enemies, food, and treasures, it must have been a master class in Commodore programming. Alien Syndrome a classic. Gauntlet was fun too even though I think the Amiga version (Gauntlet II) was the best conversion for home computers at the time. Cabal is a wonderful conversion, one of my fav C64 games, but as far as I know and experienced, it doesn't include the 2 player mode of the arcade. It has a 2P mode but unfortunately, it's not the simultaneous, hecty co-op like in the arcades but a turn-based one. It also lacks the evasive roll move but that's all I can complain about. What you do is drill out that screw hole for the joystick after you take the screw out look for a drill bit that is the size of the screw without the twists. Just the solid part. Just go in the same hole but up into the stick more then use a screw that is the same size around but longer. It's easier to do before they get destroyed but you may be able to save it still.

I first played the arcade version of Bubble Bobble in a bowling Ally in Colorado. My scout troop we were coming home from a two week hiking trip at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. We had some down time before heading to the airport to head home to Pennsylvania. This was June of 1987. I wasn't into bowling much. So I watched the others bowl or just played the video games there. I loved playing Bubble Bobble and as soon as I got home I was wondering if thete was a version for my C=64. Welp there was and I bought it.

I don't know what it is about Bubble Bobble that I like, because I'm really not a huge fan of cutsey platformers. But Bubble Bobble was always class to me. As far as the bad conversions of Bionic Commando and Ikari Warriors we got here, yeah I completely agree. We did manage to get the better conversions of After Burner, Out Run, and Street Fighter here though. Although I'm not really a huge fan of the original Street Fighter anyway so I didn't really care, LOL. Turbo Outrun was also a pretty good conversion as well, and that Jeroen Tel music was class. I hope someone does a re-make/reskin of Pole Position too. Speaking of good arcade remakes on the C64, I also liked the recent remakes of Frogger and DK that came out a few years ago. And although not arcade games perse, those recent Activision conversions by Antonio Savona have been top-notch, especially Chopper Command.

Alien Syndrome - While it looks nice, they screwed up the scrolling. The screen is supposed to scroll with your character so that you stay centered. Instead it waits until you're near the edge, then scrolls the screen over. Which leads to you often getting killed by aliens who are just off the edge of the screen and much closer to you than they should be. There are actually two versions on the C64. One version scrolls the screen, then stops and waits for you to approach the edge again. The other scrolls continuously, but it doesn't start scrolling until you're about 3/4 of the way to the edge, which also means that you're too close to the edge to avoid the aliens that appear. The C64 version isn't unique in this respect as they made this idiotic change on almost all the home ports. Cabal - Cable? I think you mean Ca-ball. :) Other really good C64 arcade ports: Gyruss (you can hear the music better than in the arcade version), Crystal Castles (Thundervision version, it even has the secret warps), Satan's Hollow, Congo Bongo (disk version), Zaxxon (disk version), Hat Trick, Mr Do's Castle, Omega Race, Pooyan, Tapper.

Also, where is Wizard of Wor (the 1983 version - not the mediocre one from 1982)? Speaking of Wizard of Wor, there is a new crack that enables a co-op two-player mode without friendly fire: csdb.dk/release/?id=183327 I think Mario Bros (the 1984 Atari version - not the crappy 1987 Ocean version) deserves an honorable mention. Also, check out the modern conversions of Donkey Kong csdb.dk/release/?id=151272 and Frogger csdb.dk/release/?id=152330 Totally agree on Bubble Bobble - awesome game, awesome conversion, great memories. Hi BastichB! I think you should have replaced OPERATION WOLF (love the short music jingles) with Green Beret. I know it is pretty hard and partly unfair, but I think it is one of the rare games where the C64 version is better than the original. I prefer CABAL over OPERATION WOLF as you can even destroy the back ground graphics and it is more balanced. OPERATION WOLF is nontheless a masterpiece in reference to the code and the stable energy/ammunition bar on the right, wich is unique, while having scrolling on the left at the same time! Despite your mentioning DOUBLE DRAGON (which is sooo bad, I agree) you totally missed out DOUBLE DRAGON II (shame on you! ;-), which I consider the best brawler on the C64. It even has a 2-player-simultaneous mode!!! And you can through objects (boxes, knives). The graphics look a bit chunky and bulky, but it plays really well and I think it even beats TARGET RENEGADE by far (even though it has these nice overlay sprites). This is just my statement from insider to insider... Great video nonetheless! Cheers

Those Nostalgia guys should've done quite a bit better regarding the cover art. Ripping off Glu's "Frontline Commando: D-Day" flagship artwork shamelessly without even trying to add or substract anything, artistically speaking, and using it as the game cover is bad enough already, but also using it for the loading screen takes the cake. At least, when Bob Wakelin ripped off Mike Zeck's cover for the #5 issue of the Punisher's original limited series and used it for the Green Beret artwork, he had the decency to dress it up accordingly and add some artistic value of his own.

  • @BastichB64K

    @BastichB64K

    3 жыл бұрын

A lot of it had to do with NTSC and PAL conversions and also in the 80's multiple companies could also get the rights to a single game hence different versions. But I think the reason for the UK versions usually been better is simply the genre , the UK C64 scene was very arcade styled games heavy and the US scene was very strategy and RPG heavy so the uk programmers were just way better at this style of game hence better versions. There were some exceptions like Afterburner and the modified UK Outrun , both are better US versions.

@@BastichB64K You could be right, I don't recall strategy and RPG games being that big in the UK until the 16-bit era started, I do remember in the 16-bit era that many games had different names for the US and international markets even thought the game was basically the same but at the time I wasn't that big on consoles and was more into the Amiga which didn't do well in the US so most games on the platform were European in origin, it's a shame the Amiga didn't do well in the states because it was a great machine for computing and gaming.

@Paul Aiello the Amiga did do well in the states it's just like the C64 but they were embraced way earlier by US customers , its just a different timeframe than when the Amiga & C64 became super popular in the UK and Europe .

@@BastichB64K I do remember in the early days of the Amiga doing well in the US because I remember many of the games from US publishers and developers but that started to dry up quite quickly around 1990 where most games after that were from European and other world developers, at least that's the impression I got. In any event, the PC was always going to win out over home computers and probably over consoles in the longer run, it's got too many advantages like being open, any company can enter the race, it's a big part of why the PC is so successful and still with us after all these decades, it adapts to anything that's thrown at it, unfortunately, Commodore didn't.

To be more accurate - we should not call all of that "conversion". These were mostly programming from scratch efforts based on the same story line and it was all up to the developer to actually do what they could to maintain quality. I have seen many ports from atari 8 bit just awful although c64 was far superior. You can't just take a sega code and convert to c64 assembly.

..... obviously ... That's simply what you call them , calling the video "Top 10 arcade games made from scratch from the arcade converted to the C64" just doesn't work very well in video form 😉

Nice vids! Uplifting but not with the annoying toilet humour and pointless random images trying too hard to be funny. Wizard of Wor is excellent, I have it set as a fave on my Lightning Modz console. I also recall Guardian fondly from my school days, excellent Defender port, the best one, if I recall well. Will check out your vid about the R-Type guy...

I always loved the port of Satan's Hollow. It was one of my favorite shooters. U remember being impressed by Crystal Castles and Paperboy ports.

satans hollow was a pretty cool conversion as well as paperboy even though it looked ugly it played well. Honestly I was never a fan of the Crystal Castles arcade so never ended up playing the C64 version .
