    Yeah it was fun indeed. Back in the day we regularly visited other friends who would share their games with us. We would share ours in return. Many days we spent walking between houses, attending gatherings, sharing experiences and tapes ;-) When reaching the friend's house, we would be told to go upstairs by their mom/dad. Reaching the room we would usually enter a realm of mystery, a dark room with a couple of people with all the same interests and the "trading" would take place. Most of us, by then, would have a double tapedeck to make the copying possible. And while the tape was rolling, someone would be writing down the timing numbers on the piece of paper included in every cassette.

    The old guy who lived across the street from our house was apparently deck crew servicing Swordfish torpedo bombers on the Ark Royal when the Bismarck was sunk. I remember my Dad buying Silent Service when I was too young to appreciate it. I played it a few times but never got past the first screen. Then a few years later, ironically just as I was giving up on the C64 for the Megadrive (Christmas 1990) I played Silent Service for two days running, Christmas Eve and the day before and loved it. But then Christmas morning and the Megadrive came and the C64 was put away for 15 odd years.

    @@BastichB64K Cool. I still play Mega drive on Emulator from time to time, mainly to finish those games that I could never finish as a kid, but I have my The C64 permanently setup in my work from home office and play it every weekend. For me it's the perfect blend between original hardware and emulation. I think the ability to save games and gradually progress, allows you to really get into games. As a kid, with tapes, you couldn't easily save, so you'd have a blast at the early part of a game until you died or got bored of failing and never really progressed. I could never have finished a game like Silent Service or Impossible Mission in the old days. I was lucky to get my The c64 just before Lockdown. I spent so many hours on it with the Zeropaige Super Mario game. The save function allowed me to take multiple attempts at tricky parts of the game that would have defeated me in the old days. Same with the Megadrive emulation. Games like Streets of Rage, I couldn't get past the 3rd level. But with saves, you have multiple do-overs without having to battle through an entire level to get back to where you died.

    I loved Red Storm Rising. I still have my boxed copy. It was one of my favorite C64 games along with Gunship and F-19 Stealth Fighter. What made the Microprose games so good were the almost infinite scenarios the player would be confronted with. Instead of finding the trick to beating a canned mission the player developed tactics to apply to different situations. The role playing aspect of medals and promotions also added more depth to the game.

    Hmm ... I wonder what a modern C64 game could do to really add to the genre. My first thought was to depict more modern naval combat ... but there really isn't anything new to add there. This is kind of crazy, considering we've been at war long enough for many sailors not to even have been born yet when it began. So, maybe some more modern gameplay ideas? I'm thinking Carrier Command, where you control a carrier, its hovercraft, and its drones. 3D graphics isn't the C64's forte, of course, but it could be an interesting programming challenge to work around. Character graphics could be good for a swamp/jungle environment that you plow around in with a Vietnam-style hovercraft.

  • @IsaacKuo

    @IsaacKuo

    @@BastichB64K I guess it just doesn't excite players and developers as much as it used to. I can understand that ... in the 1980s there was the Falklands and the Persian Gulf keeping things in the public imagination. But then the promise of "the big one" fell with the Soviet Union. The feeling of relevance and immediacy is gone. And naval warship technology feels stagnant also. There's no awesome new hydrofoil technology. Carrier aircraft still use 1970s technology ... that may have been new and exciting in the 1980s, but now it's almost half a century old! There is no longer a sense that the supercarrier is the pride of a nation. And of course, we've had our endless wars and occupations ... where absolute naval supremacy has not translated into decisive victories. I think the average person would not be able to articulate what a navy is even for. Even so, I think that there's room for some excitement if you think outside the box. I keep coming back to Vietnam style swamp/jungle fighting. It's relevant to modern scenarios of piracy and narco subs and such. So, you could have hovercraft or river craft navigating in swamps/jungles, along with Operation Wolf style first-person scenes where you directly shoot it out with the enemy. Sophisticated 3D graphics aren't necessary - just character graphics for chunky depictions of foliage and sprites for enemies popping up to shoot at you.

    @@BastichB64K Yeah, like that! But the C64 isn't really so great at 3D graphics, so I was thinking something separated into different screens. Like, navigation is done with an overhead 2D screen, with map and GPS (modern era, not Vietnam era). You switch the first person mode only for actually engaging the enemy ... more Operation Wolf or 'Nam 1975 than true 3d graphics.

    U.S.S. John Young was simmiest (i.e. most realistic of them all) . Takes a while to figure it out without manual, but when you do it is superb. Red Strom Rising was prettiest (required floppy disc device though) and overall was more of Amiga game. There was also Hunt for the Red October, strange game based on then popular movie (and the novel) where you would use Soviet sub to escape to US, fighting other Soviet ships and sub on the way.

    @@BastichB64K Well, usual method would be to start the game and then press all the keys from top left to right bottom, writing down those that did something :D RSR could not fit in C64 memory (with all fancy graphics) and in fact could not fit on a single sided floppy disc, i.e. you would constantly juggle between mission itself, hit animations and briefing/debriefing. Overall, best looking naval simulation, but it was more meant for A500 than for c-64.

    @@BastichB64K Come to think of it, poor old C64 didn't even had capabilities for something entirely complex. Considering that in modern times even washing machines have more memory and computing power :) it is really a miracle that someone made naval simulations on such machine.

    Don´t think Bismarck was considered "unsinkable".. People are usually not that stupid.. but it was powerful in its own.. Not just one torpeo hit though you often talk about the one that actually id that crippling damage on the rudder.. I remember alot of these games from the store, but i played very few.. Saly.
