I don't want to sound mean, but you really need to become more familiar with your subject matter before trying to do this type of video. You'll get there, but you just need to do more research. Had you looked up any origin of the Justice League, you would have no doubt seen in probably the first or second sentence that they were the Silver Age version of the Justice Society, which ran for about 10 years in All Star Comics. Flash#123 featured Barry Allen finding Earth-2 and the Jay Garrick Flash, which led to the Justice Society of America being reintroduced in "Justice League of America" for their annual summer team-ups, which ran into the 1980s.

Rick Tyler no I don’t think you sound mean...duly noted...I do research for these videos however sometimes during the course of filming a question might pop in my head and instead of going back to look it up I think it’s a good question to ask viewers...I’m not afraid to admit I don’t know and I have no problems asking viewers questions..I like engaging with everyone. Also, admittedly I’m not as well versed in golden age comics. Thanks for your feedback

Your channel is a ton of fun! I'm 45 now. Single dad. I tried to keep up with comics but with kids it got too damn expensive. So now I'm a weekly dollar-bin guy at Capital City Comics in Reynoldsburg Ohio. Picking up 70's and 80's issues of Marvel 2-in-1 or What If? or Marvel Team-Up for $1 a piece is great entertainment value for me lol. I appreciate your work on the channel. Take it easy

I also have a backlog of back issues I am getting through as well now. There is absolutely nothing wrong with those dollar bin issues. I love those to death. Marvel two in one and marvel team up for me are awesome! This hobby is all about the enjoyment in stories and art after all. Hope to hear from you again on another video soon. Cheers!

I started reading and collecting comics in 1962. I was 7 going on 8 years old, and I became a DC fan early. Yes, I read Superman and Batman. The 1st comic book I bought with my allowance money was a Batman comic featuring Bat-Mite! My allowance was only 25 cents a week, so 12 cents was a big investment :) . The characters I read the most were Aquaman, Green Lantern (Especially stories that featured another member of the Green Lantern Corps such as Tomar-Re or Katma Tui), The Atom, Mystery in Space featuring Adam Strange, Blackhawk, Adventure Comics featuring Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes (the LSH was the draw for me. I loved that team, and still do to this day), and the Challengers of the Unknown. I also read a lot of Gold Key Comics (Space Family Robinson, Tarzan, Turok - Son of Stone). American Comics Group, Charton Comics, and Dell Comics were also in the mix. So many choices. I spent a lot of time at the spinner racks trying to decide which comic I wanted most that particular Saturday. I didn't start reading Marvel comics until 1966. Fortunately by this time my allowance increased to 1 dollar a week.

I turned 12 in January of 1960 and began buying comics when I became a paperboy early in 1960. Now that I had my own money, I could buy comic books (as well as model airplanes). I was a huge fan of DC Comics. I always thought, and still do, that the artwork and layout of Marvel Comics from that era looked crude in comparison with the much more slick and refined DC Comics. I remember seeing everyone of the covers shown in this video on the old rotating stand-alone comic book racks in the local drugstore. In those days the drugstore, five and dimes, and G.C. Murphy (a Walmart like store minus groceries) were the places where we bought our comic books. You could buy subscriptions, but the comics were folded in half for mailing so they had permanent folds down their lengths. Because I was not a fan of Marvel Comics, I eschewed purchasing the Marvel titles in this list, except for one, and that is an interesting story. The one title I bought right off the comic stand when I was 14 is none other than “Amazing Fantasy 15”. I still own it today, unfortunately we moved around a lot because I was a Navy brat, so the comic was not preserved all that well (I made the unforgivable sin of repairing two very small cover tears with cellophane tape), but it is still graded fine. None of us really thought about preserving comics as collectibles, we kept them because we liked them, so no thought was given to preservation. I stored mine in old wooden milk crates I got from the local grocery store. I will never sell any of my comics, regardless of how valuable they become. Not only that, but I removed them from their sealed bags so I can read them occasionally, otherwise why own them? Since I will never sell them, the sealed graded bag is of no consequence to me. So why did I buy that Marvel title, when I never bought a single other Marvel comic? Surprise, it wasn’t for Spiderman, it was for the science fiction stories. I am a huge Science Fiction fan and the accompanying stories were the attraction. I wasn’t, and sorry Marvel fans, but am still not impressed by the brooding angst ridden Peter Parker. Comics books, TV, and movies are a source of entertainment and escapism from everyday problems. I don’t want, need to be lectured to, or taught morality from a bunch of left-wing artistic types. I am not interested in the moral dilemmas of the characters who appear in Marvel comics, there are plenty of those problems in everyday life. That is the reason I not a fan of the modern portrayal of Batman, and the emphasis of his dark side. Speaking of Batman, the TV show was a campy satire, meant to be humorous. The characters were exaggerated caricatures of the comic book characters. The show should not be judged as a serious presentation of the Batman drama. The extreme over-the-top situations and dialogue were its selling points. "Zonk! Boff! Same Bat time, same Bat channel!" A personal aside about the TV show. Julie Newmar was absolutely the sexiest Catwoman they ever had. At 5' 11" with those spiked high heels she stood eye to eye with 6' 2" Adam West. Plus, she had the graceful movement of a Prima Ballerina, which she was. And that skin tight black outfit was enough to drive any high school boy crazy! So, what comics did I buy and still own? Essentially, every issue (with a few exceptions) of the following titles from 1960 through 1965, including the Annuals. Every comic book I own cost me either ten or twelve cents (eat your hearts out collectors). 1. Superman, Superboy, Action Comics, Adventure Comics, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen. 2. Flash (including all three Golden Age crossover issues) 3. Justice League of America 4. ATOM 5. Green Lantern, including number one. 6. Showcase, which was used to introduce new characters, usually in a three-issue series. 7. Mystery in Space (Adam Strange) I agree with most of the choices on this list, and my disagreements are based on unavoidable philosophical differences based on generational differences in upbringing as well as societal pressures. Sorry to diverge from writing about comic books, but I am compelled to make one point and make it very forcefully. I was attending college during the era of the Black Panthers and have first hand knowledge of how they operated and what they stood for, not the sanitized modified versions presented by left-wing radical historians. They advocated violent revolution by Blacks with the goal of subjugating Whites and ruling the country. They were the Black equivalent of the Ku Klux Klan. I think it is disgraceful that they have been lionized by a comic book character called Black Panther! THE BLACK PANTHERS WERE A TERRORIST GROUP DISGUISED AS A CIVIL RIGHTS GROUP! The new Black Panthers have proven themselves to be cut from the same cloth as evidenced by their deliberate intimidation of voters at polling places. By the way, Black is NOT a racist term, it is what we were told was the politically acceptable term, despite what many of you have been brainwashed into believing.

Nice show Dante D. As for the first superhero team, it was the Justice Society of America that was formed in the Golden Age. As for Daredevil, there was a good run during the Silver Age by Stan Lee and Gene Colan. As for the X-men, there was a time that it was canceled then was then reintroduced by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, and a new series started with issue 94. Just some FYI's for you. I feel Fantastic Four issue 4 (reintroduction of Namor in the Silver Age) and Tales to Astonish issue 27 (first appearance of Hank Pym). Thanks for the good content and keep it up!!!

Great vid. I've got to add my genre-busting comment here, though, and suggest that your focus on DC and Marvel superheroes gives short shrift to a whole lot of other comics from the '60s worthy of consideration. Zap #1 comes immediately to mind, with Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers close behind. And let's not forget the incredible output from Gold Key/Dell during those years. Granted, a lot of their stuff was pap, but some gems shine through, such as the Brothers of the Spear saga that ran as back up to Tarzan, and Magnus, Robot Fighter.

I enjoyed reading Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor, and Dare-Devil, but my favorite was one you didn't mentioned (and neither have a lot of other comic book lovers which puts me in a minority (Does this make me a super geek?)) is The Legion of Super Heroes. Believe it not and even though I respect him as an innovator, I didn't like Kirby's art and while Ditko's was better it hit me as being rather bland. Even though he was never considered as an innovator I preferred Curt Swan's art. Swan was was better at drawing people. Kirby was great at draw strange machinery, but I prefer looking at people than machinery

I don't believe I'm dissing Kirby or Ditko and no one twisted my arm to read them. And I will repeat I enjoyed reading them. I have listened to why they are considered great and I'm not disagreeing with that. It just I like my art to be a little bit more realistic and clean. For me Curt Swan filled that bill and I don't think he got enough credit for it. @@jerrylashley1958

There are quite a few Superhero teams before the JL of A, but they may the 2nd to have their own title. The only team book pre-JLA I can think of is Fawcett's Marvel Family. When it comes to teams other than JSA is DC 's 7 Soldiers of Victory. Check out my giveaway video. I'm giving away Marvel Premiere #1 Power of Warlock and Avengers # 35.

NO BS I sent some drawings to Stan Lee in early 1966 one of which was a character called BLACK PANTHER. He replied with a blue post card that said "Great ideas unfortunately we can't solicit ideas, Nuff said". Several months later guess what appeared? A new character named BLACK PANTHER! I would have sued for compensation but my mother's dickwad second husband threw out all my stuff unless it was worth something, which he stole. Stan Lee RIPPED ME OFF this is absolutely the truth.

I like to add a few more comments. I find it amusing that you think Thor should speak in a deep voice. I often thought he should speak Shakespearean English with a Swedish accent. My other thought or question is: what would it have been like to have Clint Walker play Batman? He certainly would have filled out the costume better. Think about it what if in real life if there was a Batman and he looked like Adam West? Harden criminals would laugh their butts off at him. With Clint Walker they may have some second thoughts. The other thing to think about is Clint Walker resembles Bruce Wayne as much as Adam West does. Why oh why, couldn't Hollywood take Batman more seriously? They may have had a bigger hit on their hands.

Lol I you’re probably right about Thor... I’m just conditioned to think he has a deep voice because of Chris Hemsworth lol as for Clint Walker, I agree. He would have made a great Bruce Wayne! I don’t know why they decided to poke fun at Batman and choose Adam west. Don’t get me wrong, I found the show fun, but it’s not my vision of Batman. Also RIP Clint Walker, he passed away back in May. Thanks for commenting and watching, l enjoyed your comments

I'm late to the party but posting now anyway, because you touched on one of my all-time favorite comic history questions -- why WAS the original Incredible Hulk comic canceled after six issues? I haven't done any research on the topic, but I would think the bottom-line answer had to be, "sales weren't sufficient." Okay, but that leads to the obvious follow-up, "why weren't sales better, Sherlock?" Here's my three-part guess -- first up, the villains in the book were lame. I own the Essential Hulk Vol. 1 trade paperback and have read the six issues many times. Matter of fact, the only "villain" who'd go on to be a significant character when the Hulk strip was re-established in Tales to Astonish in 1964 was General Thunderbolt Ross -- and he was actually more of a foil than an out-and-out bad guy. Second reason is, the original series had a significant amount of anti-military sentiment running through the stories, something that was probably not gonna sit well with U.S. boys in 1962 and may have looked downright unpatriotic when the Cuban missile crisis unfolded in October of that year -- right around the time issue 5 or 6 was on the stands. Third, if you read the six original issues back to back, it becomes apparent that the Hulk's visual appearance, intelligence level and personality were all over the place. In other words, the character was too unsettled. Just my two cents. :)

    1. I, too, am a HUGE Batman fan and I think you severely underestimate the stories by FRANK ROBBINS at the close of the 60s, which includes "ONE BULLET,TOO MANY" featuring the "return" of The Dark Knight Detective! 2. DR.STRANGE--My Faves pOST Ditko: ROGER STERN and PAUL SMITH's brief run, ROY & DANN THOMAS\JACKSON GUICE from the Mid 80s as well as DAVID QUINN\Various Artists from the 90s! i've heard about the STEVE ENGLEHART\FRANK BRUNNER run, but although the art looks brilliant, from a story perspective, it's not for me! 3. The first 6 issues of The Incredible Hulk were erratic to say the least as they seemed uncertain in what direction they wanted to take the series! Much of what we think of the character today has more to do with the first 8 Hulk stories from TALES TO ASTONISH when STAN LEE and STEVE DITKO rebooted the series! 4. Your selections have more to do with the FIRST APPEARANCE of characters as opposed to significant events! I would argue books like BATMAN 217 ("One Bullet, Too Many" as mentioned above) or AMAZING SPIDER MAN #33 ("If This Be My Destiny" Spider Man lifts the machine) were also significant, if not iconic, stories!

Okay ..first , let me get over my depression from having had 19 of the 20 books in my original collection (the exception being Batman #137), and having NONE of them now .Fortunately , through the proliferation of collections and trades I have 19 of the 20 stories ( the exception , again being Batman #137)...... Okay , I'm good .On to the list . I have to say you nailed it , my wise beyond your years friend . The ONLY change I would make is reversing the top 2 , as without the Fantastic Four , there would have been no Spider-man , or any of the other 15 or so Marvel titles on this list . It's amazing how great the 60 's were when the "explosion" of 68 that brought solo titles to Iron Man , Captain America , Hulk , Sub-mariner , Captain Marvel , Doctor Strange and Nick Fury , Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. can't crack the list . Now as to a few books that COULD have made the list .and here's where I make a hypocrite out of myself because I said I wouldn't change anything on the list . Batman #137 and the one with Poison Ivy..Yer OUTTA Here ! In their place I would have Strange Tales #135 , which introduced us to Nick Fury : Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Flash #123 , which brought back the Golden Age Flash .(That also means I now had all 20 of the top 20 as depression creeps back in ) An Honorable mention would have to go to Justice League of America #21 which featured the first JLA / JSA crossover and the title of Crisis on Earth One , turning out to be a harbinger of things to come .Also , a magazine size honorable mention to Vampirella #1 , who has managed to stick around for 50 years . Okay , I've blathered on long enough ..Great Video , as always and I'm already looking forward to the next t one .

Personally, I would have put the first appearance of the Silver Age Flash in the number one slot because that signalled the return of superheroes to the comic book market place. Number two would be the first appearance of the Justice League because that inspired Marvel to try a super-team book. Also, really your focus is superhero comics of the Sixties. There were other popular publishers and genres of comics. Also you are focusing on American comics, there were some stunning titles in the UK.

@@Dante19883 It seems very strange you placed Justice League of America so far down, not least when you acknowledged they inspired Marvel to also create teams. No mention of Doom Patrol, who 'inspired' the X-Men either or the Legion of Superheroes who got their own title in the 60's and whose members again 'inspired' many of Marvel's characters. I also think you should have mentioned Flash, as although his reinvention was late 50's, he did kick start the Silver Age with the introduction of Barry. To not mention the 1961 Flash of Two Worlds was frankly ridiculous, as it introduced the concept of a multiverse for the first time. Furthermore rather than claim it is a list of the best comics you should have said it was a list of the most important, as most of your list are simply the debut of major characters and not necessarily the best stories. Other important debuts are the Teen Titans and yet you included the Guardians of the Galaxy instead, who were and are far less popular and less significant than the first team of superhero kids based on their elders.

Also, I went from the angle of cultural significance rather than best overall stories. A lot of the books you mentioned will be included in the video I will be doing on my picks for top 50s comics which will be posted in the next few weeks. Again, thanks for the feedback. @@Dante19883 Thanks for taking it well. Whilst I do agree that Marvel overtook DC for the first time in the 60's, much of their success can be attributed to copying DC. In fact once you study them carefully, it is surprising just how many major Marvel characters were inspired by those from DC and others. It is understandable as DC were the leaders for 20 years, but nonetheless credit should be given to the originals. I too used to favour Marvel as being much older than you I read them in the 60s. Although my favourite character was Batman, because of watching Adam West, I only read Marvel comics as in the UK US comics were hard to find, but my best friend's dad used to buy him loads every month. I only got into DC 10 years later, as well as Comico and others. I recommend you look into Grendel and the Elementals, as well as DC's more mature lines, such as Vertigo, when you do the 80's. Doom Patrol was also phenomenal in the 80s and very ground breaking. Not many comics can boast a transvestite, superpowered sentient street in their rosta.
