    What was the remake done in the late 90's that lasted between 4 and 6 episodes of The Good Life/Good Neighbors? It, like that one remake, is untraceable on the web, isn't credited in IMDb, even though I saw 4 episodes being advertized, and watched the first 7 minutes of Silly, But it's Fun, and Wikipedia The Good Life, doesn't list it as a failed remake, like Beans of Boston, Payne, Steptoe & Son, etc.

    The main problem with these shows is that many don't realize that what's funny in one country doesn't always translate well in another, and they often lose sight of what made the original such a classic. 🤦🏻‍♀️

  • @JPFalcononor

    @JPFalcononor

    One other point is that many UK sitcoms have short seasons. Black Adder, for example, is a classic, but each season is only 6 episodes and Red Dwarf averages around 10. It is easier to create gems when you do not need to grind out over 20 episodes like USA shows do. Heck, back in the day, classics like the first five seasons of THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW had over 30 episodes each season.

    The way I see it, as a brit, is that the reason that so many US remakes of great British shows fail, is because they lack the nuance, subtlety and brevity of British humour, and a lot of the time, they drag the joke on way too long, rule of thumb, a cringe gag fails too be funny if dragged on past ten seconds. I practically grew up watching the British tv shows. I am so very thankful there have been no American remakes of some of my most favorite British tv shows. Like My Family, Rosemary and Thyme, Keeping Up Appearances, Last of the Summer Wine, and Are You Being Served?. Unless there has been. And I wasn't aware of it.

    I think part of why the US keeps trying to remake UK shows is b/c UK shows are often limited in number of episodes, and so it ‘feels’ like there’s more there....however, it’s often not the case. UK shows feel like they leave the audience wanting more vs US shows who leave waaay too late and just overdo it with episodes. UK Office was like 14 eps total vs US Office and 201 episodes (they could’ve & prob should’ve stopped after S7, Season 8 & 9 had 49 episodes that prob could’ve been cut)

    One of the reasons these shows are so good is that they don't keep dragging them on until they run out of steam. The original version of "The Office" in the UK ran for two series - and that was it. The US version dragged on for 9 series - and was getting terrible reviews by about season 4. "The IT Crowd" was funded for a 5th series - but the cast and writers ended it at the 4th series. Knowing when to stop is important.

    I.T. Crowd and Coupling (1st three seasons) are brilliant British comedy. Love them. Had not even heard of about 2/3 on this list which sounds like a good thing. As for Life on Mars (US) that was a great show that didn’t get time to develop. My understanding is that the weird ending can be chalked up to them knowing they were getting cancelled and having to wrap it up somehow. Too bad. It was a very cool concept show. Always wished it could have continued.

We just weren't ready for it yet. 3. No game shows?? There's so many great British game shows that had a shittier U.S. adaptation.

    The US Dr. Who movie was made with BBC participation. Had bad ratings because it went up agains the Roseanne finale. Could have been worse, they might have cast an American actor as the Doctor. All in the Family (Til Death Do Us Part), Sanford and Son (Steptoe and Son) and Three's Company (Man About the House) were remakes that were very successful. Not to mention the US version of The Office being a huge hit. They will keep trying until they get a hit. Umm...what about Law & Order UK? Apparently there were UK remakes of The Golden Girls, SNL, That 70s Show, Drunk History, etc.

    As an American I'm not familiar with Brit shows. I know the unfunny All in the Family was copied from a Brit show that was more biting and probably funnier. You don't understand that in American television most of the actors have model looks. The actresses may have just walked off a fashion show and are much better looking that the average person you see. On American tv very few people are overweight, none of them wear glasses, they don't suffer from typical ailments like diabetes but their hair and cloths always looks perfect. AND they never seem to have real money problems.

    As an American who’s a longtime fan of British comedy, it’s very VERY seldom that American versions of English shows just don’t cut the mustard. Case in point: I love Coupling (BBC), and they tried to make an American version of it, and as an American, I wasn’t a fan. The Office (UK), and it’s US counterpart, they both rocked despite the fact that the former lasted one season and the latter lasted nine. And I didn’t know there was a US version of AbFab (I’m glad I dodged THAT bullet).

And our remakes of UK comedy panel shows are best not even mentioned. Suffice to say the sight of a bunch of comedians loudly fake-laughing at unfunny lines is about as cringeworthy as it gets!
