I learned your first way and used it for awhile. A short time ago it dawned on me that it was really just a slip knot that wasn’t pulled tight. I make my slip knots by hand so it is very natural for me. I mostly use that method now. Thanks for covering this so well for newer crocheters.

Thank you so much! Love the first method you showed. I've been crocheting for over 20 years now, but I still struggled to remember how to make magic circles and would use 2 single crochets instead and make the next stitches into the first one, struggling because it was tight.

Great, that method is ideal for those!
Hi Mrs Tuula, at last I learnt how to do the magic ring correctly, I was doing it in a wrong way, that's why I couldn't tight the circle completely afterwards. Your #1 method is very helpful. Another method, not in this video, which I learnt, is by making a slip knot, then chaining 4, and then making dc in the circle, and finally tighten. What I don't know is if these 2 methods are used for different patterns, if you can let us know. Thanks a lot.
@TuulaMaaria
2 ай бұрын
Glad it was helpful! There are many fairly similar methods. These two methods both go for any pattern that needs a magic ring. It is just a personal preference.

I like the first method it’s much easier than somebody other magic ring tutorials that I’ve watched
@TuulaMaaria
Ай бұрын
That's the easiest I find too!
I crochet an extra stitch for example if my first stitch is a DC I crochet 4 stitches. Then crochet my DCs in the beginning stitch. Works well for me. Sometimes I start with SC around first. For example if I needed 12 DCs, I’d chain 3 stitches then make 12 SCs in the first stitch. Then continue with my pattern of DCs after that.

I tried to do the magic ring, but I can’t do it. Maybe you could do a video a slow video on how to do the magic ring cause I tried other videos and I can’t do it.
@LisaT_

Same. I think it works easier for her this way because of the way she holds her hook. I don’t hold my hook that way, I hold mine like a knife and I use my index finger straight. So it really depends on how you hold things. I was able to do it. But it was very cumbersome & messy. I’m right handed and it relies a lot on using your left hand fingers.

Slow the video down from the settings. You can try out which speed would look best to follow it. You can select 0.75, 0.50 etc speed. Hope that will help!

@@LisaT_ Good it worked for you! I'm right-handed too. Like I wrote to this comment, often slowing the video down can also help in tutorials when something feels complicated.
That's an interesting new way to me. Can you get the Susan Bates finishing needles here in Finland?
@TuulaMaaria
2 ай бұрын
No, as far as I know you can't. I ordered them from the US just for the video originally and postage and customs made the price to be about $30. You can order them from Germany and UK at times but their Amazon doesn't necessarily deliver to Finland. I checked Karnaluks in Estonia but they don't have them either. All of Susan Bates stuff is mainly sold in the US. So I'm keeping my needles carefully because I know I won't be ordering more!

Thank you so much for the information. That's rather expensive. :) Maybe they'll come to Finland someday. I'm going to try the new method the next time I need to start something that way.

Good to know!
My mom and aunts have crochet all my life, I also crochet ( I'm 71 years old ) I can't remember them using this circle thing. I have never made or used a ring. WHAT DO YOU USE THEM FOR ? Please explain. Thank you
@TuulaMaaria
2 ай бұрын
You use them in everything that is crocheted in the round, to start the circle. You can of course almost always replace the magic ring with some amount of chains, that is why some people never use it. I find this better because you can adjust the size of the hole in the middle. If you chain you have to keep trying out how many chains you need.

I have a question why when connecting another yarn to the project i see they always make a knot before doing any stitch?? what happens if you don't put a knot just attach the yarn with a stitch??
@TuulaMaaria
Ай бұрын
I never make knots in crochet, so definitely, there is no need for knots when you join yarn. You just take the new yarn and start.
@juulian1306
Ай бұрын
Me neither and I've never had any problems. I make one exception though: If I make things for small children I'll make a knot for a little bit of extra security because children play rough with their toys.
