3 Alternatives to a Magic Ring/Circle! (Easy Tutorial)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Do you struggle to make the Magic Ring/Circle when starting your crochet? In this tutorial I show you how to make a ring using 3 different methods that (in my opinion) are easier, less fiddly, and more secure than the "normal" method of making a Magic Ring. The first method is using the first chain instead of a magic ring, the second is to make the tradition chain ring, and the third is my own way of doing a double magic ring. Each of these methods has it's pros and cons that I show in this video also, and compare each method side by side. I also offer recommendations of when it is advantageous to use one technique over another.

    As a knitter, I have found crocheting to be extremely difficult, but I love the look. I am clumsy with the hook and find the magic ring method to be a nightmare. Thank you for these three tips. They look easy peasy!

    I just recently began TRYING to learn the magic ring but have been so frustrated with it I was ready to just give up and keep starting my projects the old way with just a slip knot. Number 3 is going to change the way I start everything that has to be started in the round. Thanks for sharing these great methods.

    You know those Woobles crochet kits? They come with the magic ring and the first six loops already done for you, the reason being that "magic rings are too hard for first-timers to learn." I disagree and wish they hadn't put that idea into people's heads and had instead, put how to make one in the video instructions. Your first technique is genius and will undoubtedly save me a lot of frustration.

    I’m curious why you think the traditional method of creating a magic ring is “fiddly,” especially when compared to your method 3. Of the three you demonstrated, I like the first method the best, but I’ll likely continue to do my magic rings the traditional way because I don’t find them bothersome at all, and the center hole completely disappears when the yarn end is pulled. But thank you for showing alternative ways to achieve a similar result…always good to learn something new! 😉

  • @meemamakes

    @meemamakes

    4 ай бұрын

    It's subjective and there's a few different methods to do the "traditional" one. And I definitely find the one where you make a cross fiddly, and it likes open up over time in heavy use items so I don't recommend it. I am of the opinion that there is no right or wrong in crochet, just preference for different techniques.

    The amount of chains depends on what you’re making and how big or small you want your circle. You could chain 2 or 20. Usually you’re your patterns will tell you what to start with. Different size yarns will also make a difference in how chains many you use. Hopes this helps you. 🙂

    Great tutorial. I am curious why you are using US terminology instead of UK?

    Because I prefer it! I can read and write UK terms too though and all my patterns are available in both 😊

    Then second method is used to other types of projects. Just saying so y'all be careful and don't get too used to stuff without knowing what it's created for. Because after getting used seeing it done for others purposes could be confusing. I really recommend learning to doing different starting knots/circles/chains as they should be done. Cool video. Just saying is mixing definitions and processes. That won't be beneficial when y'all start trying to upgrade y'all crocheting skills

    You did a double crochet what about a single crochet stitch?

    You can use these methods for any crochet stitch. You would just adjust your starting chain length. Eg for using method 1 for single crochet you’d start with a chain of 2
