Welcome to Smashing UK Productions's Top 10!
2020 Episode 18: Top 15 World War II Films
Following on from our World War I video, we’re moving on to take a look at the best World War II films. Now, we previously made this list before back in 2014, however, we felt that it was heavily outdated and quite lacking, so here we have a more thorough and more expansive look at the 15 best World War II films. Bear in mind we’re only looking at movies, so miniseries such as 'Band of Brothers' and 'Generation War' won’t be included.

I find some of the comments on this video baffling. Half of them want more modern movies, half want more classic movies and this is the bane of KZread, you can just never win. These guys have created a list that gives us a perfect mix of old and new, of both anglocentric movies and international movies. Movies that everyone knows, then more obscure picks. Personally I think this is the embodiment of a perfect list that caters to everyone while also providing people with new movies to watch. But unfortunately KZread is a place full of toxic people. Come and See is the only option I can think of. It accurately illustrates the horrors of war throughout history. It was brilliant how they filmed it as if it were a horror picture rather than an action war film. It is, without a doubt, one of the best war pictures of all time, with its tense setting, frightening images, and bleak tone. Such a visceral and horrifying representation of the madness and devastation that war brings to all of us.

True war is different I had the opportunity to listen to 2ww soldier, guy got medal for bravery and what he told us was that he basically shat his pants when he saw about 20 enemies, his hand froze on the trigger of machine-gun and that he didn't even look where he was shooting. There have been so many war films over the years, and many would qualify for inclusion in the top 15. My list would include "The Cruel Sea" perhaps the best British war film ever made, and William Wyler's "The Best Years of Our Lives", which in my view is one of the greatest films of any genre. I must add, I believe the 2017 film "Darkest Hour" is one of the most underrated, and one of the greatest War films, at least of the 2010's. It deserves more credit, not just as a companion peice to the film "Dunkirk", which inadvertently overshadows the film in question in any conversation, but as a standalone masterpiece, and as a sort of British answer to the 1970 classic "Patton". I for one, would much appreciate that the film receives its just reward, and approval from the wider war film fan groups of the internet.

This is a very formidable collection, though some of the Hollywood ones are less persuasive as depictions of war. Glad you put "Come and See" at the top of the list; and another Soviet film "The Dawns Are Quiet Here" is well worth watching.

My grandfather was at Gallipoli, then the Somme and stayed there in France in & out (Etables Sept '17)of the trenches till the war ended and he finally got home in 1919. He would never talk talk about combat. He said "War is hell!" He spoke about the pre-dug holes in the front line trenches where one hopefully flicked, the German stick grenades into.. Yes, all of those films depicted some sort of intolerable hell. They should definitely should NOT glamorize any war. Yes, Saving Private Ryan is realistic and done with a huge budget. Das Boot was incredible. But as one commentator said, the Russian front was under represented. "Cross of Iron" captures a little bit of realism of the horrors and futility of war on the Russian Front. Movies like Kelly's Heroes are purely propaganda.

"Private Ryan" has so many unrealistic, bullshit scenes, starting with the beach scene where soldiers are being pierced by bullets ten feet under water. Any bullet stops dead after about an inch after having hit water. "Cross of Iron" is basically just an action movie that uses WW2 as a background. The most realistic actual war movie listed here is "Das Boot". But agreed, KH and basically every major American war movie from the 1950 and -60s is silly hero worship.
