Facts about Mireya!
Alejandina Mireya Luis Hernández, often referred to as Mireya was born on February 25, 1967 in Camagüey, Cuba.
She helped her country and club where she played to win several trophies with her main position as a wing spiker.
At 5' 10" Mireya was one of the smallest elite world class outside hitters in international competition.
She was known for her tremendous jumping ability having 36 inch vertical on a bad day, and on good days jumping closer to 40 inches.
Mireya Luis is arguably the greatest player to ever compete on an international court. She is a member of the first Olympic women's team in history to win three gold medals in three consecutive Olympic Games.

@@dimbwemazala8978acho que mireya supera ela porque a Vargas tem altura isso facilita mais ainda para ela achar angulos menores ou cravar mais e também a vargas tem 1,94cm e alcança 3,26cm a mireya tem 1,75 de altura e alcança 3,39cm que a diferença fisica e muito grande mais vargas pode sim se tornar uma referência

Vocé tem toda a razāo...A logica evolutiva define o futuro como o perfeçaomento das geraçoes potenciais e sempre comparadas com as precedentes indicam desenvolvimento.. No caso de Mireya essa quasi regra nao é aplicavel.Ela é ainda a Queen!

Ésos ataques de Mireya Luis lo tenían todo, el salto, el tiempo adecuado, la visión del bloqueo, la visión del espacio libre en la cancha, la suspensión y la potencia del golpe, esa jugadora era capaz de hacer todo eso en escasos segundos, única en verdad. No sabemos si vendrá alguna que pueda por lo menos igualarla en el renglón de ataque.

Search for Joel Despaigne. He was her husband. He played for the men's national team during the 80s and 90s. He is the best spiker in Cuban volleyball history.

Because the Olympic committee made a mistake by giving Mireya the award of the player of the decade. I still remember how the Cuban commentators of that time explained this several times on national Cuban TV. The made a mistake by choosing Mireya as the player of the decade. Then, they realized that they could not give two awards to the same player, so they chose Regla Torres as the player of the century.

Aún conserva su récord en saltos, a pesar de ser 1.75 m. Las jugadoras de ahora son altas 1.90 m, pero ninguna ataca con el poder de Mireya, la técnica es superior. No solo los saltos, aterriza perfectamente también, la potencia y la velocidad es inigualable aún hoy. Lo más bello de ella era que no temía a los bloqueos, a ella ni el triplo bloqueo la paraba. Además, sus ataques, la mayoría van en primera línea, rápido y eficaz. Las jugadoras actuales no llegan a ese nivel aún.

I thought boskovic is the best woman player of all time until i’ve seen mireya luis. It’s incredible 338 cm spike height although she is just 175 cm. If she played in these times she would dominate women volleyball like those times for sure.

As much as we all love Mireya - her achievements are superb and brilliant, and her jumping ability seems like out of this World, I honestly do not think that we can compare generations from 20, 30 years in the past with how the game is played today. My point is that every new generation of champions is better than those before. Mirey is a true queen of jumping and spike, but the way how the game is played today, with movements on court, the block, the serve, setting, I think it is more advanced level compared to times when famous Cuban generation played. One cannot compare mid 90ties with today, not at all. There are those spikes, some amazing points but the overall strenght, the tactics the fitness of players, it is all better today, much better! Nevertheless, Mireya is still my personal volleyball queen of spike! ❤

Have they not boycotted 88 Seoul Olympics siding with North Korea it would be 4 consecutive gold medal...the only country who won Olympics (3)consecutively 92,96,2000..... (2 )World Cup 94,98. (4 )consecutive world championships 89, 91,95,99 and they were silver during 85 World championships....

She is only 37 in world rating, we all know it is ridicolous .She is the most spectacular. Before her many of the best player in the ranking have serious coordination and motion problems . Simply tall ladies with a decent vertical jump , some of the 31 cm bigger then her ,that means 50 cm more vertical reach . She had more than 1 meter vertical jump really great for a woman, Not to talk about a sensational spike technique.

May nabasa ako sa Volleyball Magazine in 1996 na ang Las Veteranas daw eh lumaban sa isang collegiate men's team sa Canada at nanalo pa raw sila...

Nothing to deminish Mireya. But blocking has come a long way. Spikes do not happen that close to the net anymore. Attackers will not even try to spike a ball that close to the net. Shame... the game was so much better in those days.
