Hi mister anadialog, (sorry I couldn't find your first name) Here's something I tested over 35 years ago and which changes the sound coming out of a vinyl turntable enormously, it's the cable between the turntable and the preamp... At the time, I tested a connection (soldering the cinch plugs was a real struggle) between the turntable and the preamp using 12mm diameter coaxial cable for HF transmitters... Test it and you'll see that it adds information to the sound as if you were buying a 2000€ preamp when a metre of this cable costs less than 10€. The problem is that it will be difficult to move the turntable, but in doing so you will discover something incredible. The cable is very stiff I tested this a long time ago! Take my word for it. While these are all essential points, I'd like to focus on # 9 for now. Can someone point me to a listening comparison between a clamped and unclamped record? I'm trying to keep an open mind here but already the physics don't seem to support clamping. # 1. From the bottom up you're doing everything to de-couple to avoid vibrations transferring upwards: Feet from surface, then motor/moving parts from body, platter mat from platter also in some cases - and then in the last step you reverse the process with a clamp! Why! # 2. Physics teaches that the centrifugal forces of a rotating disc are moving away from the center pulling it outward. This should already minimize any up & down movement (what would even cause the disc to vibrate either up & down or sideways back & forth when it's on a solid vibration-free surface?), no?

Another thing is to try to keep dust and debris from getting on the record in the first place. Using good outer sleeves not only keeps the record covers looking good, it also keeps the record cleaner if used properly ( the open part at the top of the record jacket).

Ohh I miss working in a record store. We used to have these all the time and I had all my most important records sleeved this way. I wish I knew where to find them now. I see on Amazon some complaining they're too small and the outer sleeve won't fit. If it's ourter sleeve protectore,why wouldn't an LP fit?

@@Coasterdude02149 If you are from the USA, as I am, back in the 1950s and 60s, some of the albums released here were in what is called "tip-on" jackets where the artwork on the front and back is glued on rather than printed on the cover itself. These jackets were wider and slightly taller than the standard L.P. jacket these days. Although tip-on jackets are rare now, they are still sometimes released, here in the states anyway. Some of my albums are in outer sleeves from a company called Vinyl Styl which sells outer sleeves that are 12.75' x 12.75 " whereas Mo-Fi sleeves are I think 12.2". Vinyl Styl sleeves are good sleeves 3 mils thick and are sturdy and don't split under normal handling. The only thing is the Vinyl Styl sleeves are cloudy and not as pleasing to the eye as Mo-Fi sleeves but they do the job of protecting the record and the cover and that's the main thing. So, if you want a good outer sleeve and don't mind foggy sleeves rather than crystal clear, you could go with Vinyl Styl outer sleeves. I hope that helped.

The last tip about Cartridges is gold. My main Turntable is a mint Dual CS 505-4 Audiophile Concept from the early 90s and after using an Ortofon Super OM Cartridge with OM 40 Stylus I was a little bit bored. So I won an original boxed Stanton 681 EEE Cartridge and original Stylus on ebay and my life has changed for the better. It matches the Ultra Low Mass tonearm of my turntable beautifully, so paired with my Technics SU 7300 Integrated Amplifier sounds like a dream. Recently I was really lucky to win an auction for an original D6800 EEE stylus from the US wich I should receive today, so I`m set even for spares.

Good info. By the way, as a testimony to what you say is true, tip #8. Clean your records. I had been seeking a rare album from WAR and could not find one for 2 years in different shops, yard sales and online. Finally came across a what appeared to be good to near mint version. (paid 6.00 for it) brought it home. Put it on, disc washed it with D3 record cleaner. It could barely play. I was so disgusted. Some of the songs sounded fair, but mostly, with pops and skips and cracks, I thought it was toast. Before giving up on it, I decided to deep clean it. After cleaning, and setting to dry, I waited till the next day. I tried it again after brushing it. My wife looked up and asked if it were a CD! No KIDDING! I thought it was in good shape in the record store because I could see no apparent issues. However, the residue left over from smoking, (maybe cannabis from the 70's) grim and film left the record almost inoperable. After I cleaned it, I was amazed by almost 90% no pops, cracks or skips. Before it would not even play all the way through a song because this one song skipped so badly. After, it was like a different record. Amazing indeed! Thanks for your videos.

That is a tough question...try moving the phono preamp if you have one. Try removing the power cables in your system one at a rime. Make sure the cart leads are all connected...obviously connect the ground to the preamp or amp...sometimes its badly shielded equipment like Chinese gear or TV's...from my experience it's usually something like that or a power cord itself...

Tip #3? I did not know Technics Turntables, such as yours, could be aligned to the Baerwald alignment scheme using the stock headshell. I use the Technics tracking error scheme which is similar to the Stevenson protracted adjustment.

Ciao, since your channel is all about audio reproduction you might want to talk about adding a sub woofer to a stereo setup. I recently added a REL sub to my 1970's era rig. John Hunter, the owner, lead designer, helped my select the right model for my rig. The addition is simply amazing. The sub adds a new sonic foundation that was not there previously. It's not bass per se, it blends into the sound. In my case - the sub expanded the sonic picture by adding something special to the low and upper mids in addition to producing a structural foundation. This simple addition makes my 50 year old speakers sound better in ways I did not expect when I added the sub. The music soundstage has more presence than before. I'd be interested in knowing your thoughts on adding a sub to a stereo rig. And what your viewers think also. Addio.

Having subs near turntables though can be a whole other can of worms.. as I am used to with DJing many venues.. if you don't have great flooring or booth/stand for your turntable you might want to consider concrete slab under your deck, Isonoe feet, MK Stands boots, Kabusa tonearm dampener, Luke Absorber or Auralex Isotone etc.. or DIY ashtray or squash ball remedies. If you are archiving/ripping, do NOT have your subs playing, preferably no speakers etc..

cables!!!! I wouldnt believe that if i did not made this experience by myself. Cables have a huge influence for a good sound. Even my guitar sound has changed ever since ive changed the old fucking shit to new and highend cables. Yes, it depends on money, as allways, but......hell yeah;-)

@@4130aykut you want low capacitance (or maybe not.. Hendrix and others that use long long curly cables are using them to reduce the treble..) - the lower the capacitance, the brighter/more treble of your signal gets through. Importance for weak unbalanced signals like turntables, guitars, microphones

Excellent video Guido. However with second hand vinyl I have found that around 50% were totally unplayable even after proper cleaning.

Ciao Nicola, grazie! Allora, è sicuramente meglio usare il giradischi senza nulla, è vero. Ma avendolo praticamente fisso, è antipatico fare e disfare costantemente, è meglio tenerlo chiuso piuttosto che aperto. Ho proprio sentito una differenza. Incredibile a dirsi ma influisce davvero sul suono. Last but not least, con il coperchio abbassato non entra polvere e questo è un aspetto da non sottovalutare...

Blu-Tack is best for cleaning stylus, just leave a lump next to the platter dip the stylist into it with a little bit of pressure everytime you play your record massage the blue tack now and and again to keep it sticky. Make good isolation feet as well bottom of your table, Get those disc candles the ones that have the aluminium casing keep the casing fill this with Blu-Tack put underneath the feet if you have big rubber feet use a marble in between, put a little bit of blue tack underneath candle tray to keep it stable and add more decoupling. You should clean your styli with green Emery paper? actually will add longevity to the stylist, 20 to 30 records playing time or if you find you have stubborn dirt. You can get it from Linn website. I would say go at 45-degree angle from back to front once on each side and twice flat at the bottom to keep the styli polished, You should have said about spending money on buying a good arm is very important just as much as a cartridge is. A good arm is Origin live silver £650 comes already with silver litz wire. nothing better at this price point or significantly higher. You can make a really cheap $70 cartridges sound like $1,000+ cartridge with a bit of effort diy. get a good servo speed control to run your turntable as well. even a mains conditioner go for one with the transformer type what can be cheap off eBay £20 look for something used in telecommunications. to run the turntable and phono stage. A motor upgrade is always good option one with very little cogging effect or AC, Swiss Motors are probably the best. Origin live do Motors supposed to be good. Bearing oil is important do not use thin oil use manual gearbox oil 80 or 90 sae, and even a dob of graphite grease at the bottom. you don't want the platter to be free spinning this is bad you want the motor to work a little bit reducers the cogging affect on the motor. always put your belt if belt driven in a bag of talcum powder this reduces wow and flutter better grip for the belt prevent sticking onto the platter.

i used to use Blu-Tack to clean my stylus as well, and when i had a Dual 704 in the late 70's that had the horrible plastic head-shell i used to put a little Blu-Tack round the inside edges of the head-shell mount to dampen any resonance and it worked but i do not need Blue-Tack now with my Lin LVX arm

Don't have a zero Stat but I found a thorough wet cleaning + mofi (or similar) sleeves will keep static away for a long time. I'd also like to say, avoid record variants like the "coke clear" vinyl. Maybe it's just me but I swear they sound worse. Don't know if the material is different or what. I always go for black when possible.

Some clear vinyl can be the best sound, but I agree there are trash coloured/marbled/picture discs - apparently black vinyl has added black to make it black. So a clear transparent can be the purest mix..I always go for black too. But solid colours CAN be good - I've had good solid white and solid red, but I prefer the solid black.

I need to buy a preamp but need help! I have a Stanton 681EEE "Iron Core" cartridge. What model of preamp will work with a non MM or MC cartridge or does it matter. I see some where you can set the load resistance, capacitance and compliance. It says it's rated at 47K ohm load. I don't see any adjustable preamps with that high of value. Any suggestions? Less than $200 please.

I have found a paradigm with records, on large external speakers they sound great, with headphones they're practically unbearable. So, with speakers they beat cd's, but with headphones, it has to be cd's... what do you think?

Well, I do agree that if noise is particularly present, pops, clicks and the record itself, then headphones bring it right in your brain...I think that is what you are experiencing and it is understandable....

I have purchased good quality cables. The ONLY difference that I have noticed that makes them better, is the connections themselves. It took awhile to determine this as I assumed that the cables were intrinsically better. Not the case. Sure, really good construction, thicker braided copper cable, is going to maximize your connections. BUT....I was using every day cables, for example, the ones that came with the equipment, and I noticed that they were loose on the connections on the back of my audio equipment. So....first, I adjusted the clamping force of the RCA connectors, and I didn't have any issues of attenuation, or signal strength after that. After awhile, I decided to clean the connections, both on my equipment, and on the cables...HUGE difference. So.......what I learned it to keep the connection secure and clean. What this also showed me was that good quality cables with GOOD ENDS were the way to go. Non corrosive connectors with good tight fitting connectors. THAT is what is needed and they do cost a little more. The best ones for the cost were about $20 a pair at the time. So what I did was buy connectors for literally pennies, upgraded all my cables and.....no difference from the more expesive ones. It takes LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG cables to make a difference in any degradation of sound. Look it up...

Im currently using a pro-ject xpression carbon classic with the acrylic platter connected to the marantz 2230 receiver. My speakers are klipsch rf 52 II. My questions, is there an option and or will i profit from an phono pre amp? Also, what upgrades would you reccomend in my setup? The cartridge i use is the rega elys 2, it came with the record player when i bought it used from ebay. best regards from germany, steven

Yes, a dedicated phono preamp is highly recommended! Upgrade? Perhaps I would start with the preamp...then maybe the cart or with a good budget the amp...but its all relative. The preamp is a good idea!

I çlean my stylus after every side of a record because i found out that the freq response of the stock p mount cartridge on my technics sl-q30 is 10-30khz.

Great tips, all relevant 5 years later ! Well done. I can not agree with you more.. Stylus/Cartridge makes the MOST difference in the sound of a turntable, period. Next is the phono pre-amp....

Milty zero stat uses ionizing radiation to neutralize static. You can do the same thing with the Americium in a smoke alarm. Applied Science did a video on the topic of radiation being used to reduce static.

Sorry, it is Alpha radiation that eliminates static. The old anti static record brushes used polonium-210 as their radiation source.

17:25 The Audio Technica AT95E is a really good quality compared to its price. Comes close to an Ortofon 2M Red, but costs not even half the price. Audio Technica cartridges have a reputation of being crappy, because of all those AT3600L (or its Rega Carbon rebadge) being the typical stock cartridge on most low-end turntables. However, it doesn't make all the AT cartridges crappy.

The new vm version is awesome.....plus you can snap in all kinds of other styli.....conical for rough old records...microline for the mint ones...also super easy to mount

Hi Anthony, well, because integrated pre-amps are almost never good sounding. They just do the job. If you are on a budget then stick with that, no problem. But as soon as possible I would try to upgrade to, for example, one of the preamps I have suggested in the video description for that topic. The same can be said, for example for a headphones amp. The integrated ones are rarely of high quality and in all these cases, trust me, the sound changes in better and a lot!

All nice tips! I would add that if you are using an antistatic gun be careful to use it on the disk once it's removed from the turntable! Using mine directly on the disk while on the turntable itself weakened the motor at the point that it struggled to keep 45 rpm even if it has a quartz lock! Now after a couple of months it seems it has recovered, anyway I also used on a keyboard while I still didn't know it is dangerous, and that one is dead...

Ultrasonic record cleaning is a must. Blows all of the garbage out of the grooves. No other cleaning regimen can match it.

@@anadialog For sure, likely about $800 DIY with decent tank, rotation, filtration, etc., and much higher with a Degritter or likewise. But if you start at a deficit (i.e., records not cleaned to the fullest), it's debatable if anything you do thereafter will truly matter. IMO, ultrasonic cleaning is a gamechanger in sound reproduction. By the way, nice channel. Very informative.

I recently heard a xx-1 top of the line and it was incredible but not sure it's worth the crazy money. Maybe I'll upgrade to the xx-2 eventually, how about you are you tempted to get the xx-2?

Regarding the protractor.. You really cheaped out here.. And in this case you might aswell just use the Technics overhang Gauge.. Look up a custom made MintTractor for your specific turntable. I had the guy make one for my Technics table. It's a glass mirrored arc protractor with groves cut in the glass, it's just something else, - also it actually is based on your specific effective tonearm lenght and overhang. Even though I had many cheap protractors, - as soon as I started playing with the MintTractor, it was plain as day how poor my alignment was. This protractor allowed me to really align the cantilever not only at the null points, but getting it to track the entire arc. The sound was just heavily upgraded, I would really recommend this!!!! Yes it's expensive, but it's worth it!!!!

@@anadialog No the technics is Stevenson. Well actually they have their own null points, which is almost identical to Stevenson.

Phono cartridge buying is scary now . Ones own taste often is lost buying a so called good cartridge . 30 years a go I found Grace cartridges , hearing on my cousin Dual 1229 . I went out and bought 3 of them . Now I needs a new stylus and I know where to go. SS thanks so much.

Check if speed is accurate and if you have a good tonoarm, if so, just get the best cartridge you can buy! That will really make you jump out of your pants....possibly paired with a high quality phono preamp...

Not sure. People have hypothesized it because of residue on stylus, which apparently lowers performance, it does not damage it.

He is right with your cartage , they all sound different , unlike changing CD players , Digital crap . True on second hand records , they are less Digitized . I do not mind a bit of su rffice sound at the beginning on my records as the treble is nice on records , CDs are incapable of playing through anything other than Digital blocks . I have plenty more salt for Digital LOL plenty .

Tell me what is "good" protractor? (You dont know) becouse geometrics are different with every manufacture turntable, tonearms are different lenghts etc. It so tricky to tell becouse you need to have very good understanding how turntable are made! Sorry to tell everyone watching, nobody seems to know xxxx about in thease turntable setup videos.

Hi Antti, I can certainly tell you what is a 'good' protractor. I have been using them for more than 20 years. First of all, a good alignment protractor is a precise protractor. Don't think they are all precise. They are not. The famous ones, which have personal names associated to them, are standards. But a lot of companies develop their own generic alignment protractor that some times does not work correctly. With all the new cheap and less cheap models the standards do not always work correctly. I have a new model from Technics and in that case it's easy, you just use the Baerwald. You, Luiro, are thinking in standards but most people out there have new turntables, not vintage gear. In that case you must find the best solution for you according to the characteristics of your TT but a lot of new high quality protractors packs, come with multiple solutions that fit most turntables. Simple versions downloaded from the web, like a lot of people do, may not work properly. Protractors several times, as I said are downloaded from the web and printed on simple paper. That can be a problem in the future because it will certainly loose precision after some time. So a 'good' protractor will also be made with quality materials. Finally, a 'good' protractor can also have some further elements that can help and increase the accuracy of the allignemt, for example a lot of them are printed on a mirror, which greatly helps to align the cantilever and/or the body to the lines. As we can clearly see there can be ' GOOD' protractors as well as not so good examples.

Tip 5.1: when using record brush try to touch ground terminal with another hand to drain static.

I would describe the best phono preamp in few words: bipolar power 24-30V, fast fet differential stage, faster bjt differential stage, the fastest a class stage loaded with a current source and a correction chain as a feedback to the first stage. All other schematics will either have worse noise, or phase distortions, or a low dumping factor, etc. I hope this info can be easily matched on your preamp schematic to perform some analysis and to make a decision.

Forget the stat gun...a plasma lighter removes more static for around $10.

Good advice but remember garbage in garbage out so I would upgrade my cartridge first.

tip 13 try to buy a turntable with a high quality straight tone arm. they are better tracking.

Not if you are looking at the short straight tone arm DJ turntables.. they have bad angling, good for scratching only, terrible for playback and wear. I have a Vestax PDX-A1S for instance.. coupled with a Concorde cartridge it's terrible haha. But holds the scratch lol.

ya thats a djtt. i wouldnt even bother with that why? when technics 1200 S arm is the industry standard! if was a dj i would go with an S arm on whatever brand!

You know sir for what I notice I had bought new copy of records n they are expensive n not made right the spindle whole to tied I rather buy a good use copy they not making brand new record copy good anymore for what had happen to me now I stop n I rather buy them on eBay oh discod

The minute someone pitches an acrylic platter I stop listening to them. If your principle for accurate steady speed is weight of the platter then why not glass. Glass is heavier and in the real world glass is cheaper than Acrylic. Acrylic like all plastics generates static so other than being the current fad why? Glass is more scratch resistant, more resistant to vibration and much easier to clean. But forgetting both Glass and plastic I can't help but notice all the popular high end turntable manufacturers are using aluminum platters on their highest end turntables. We run away from Aluminum only to return to it. And as a sidenote these premium manufacturers are all now adding the equivalent of Quartz lock speed control on their newest turntables as an upgrade from their previous models. What amazing new tech will they bring back next year. Perhaps a tonearm that returns to its resting position at the end of the record rather than stopping or just grinding away at the label because somehow returning the arm after the record has stopped playing affects the playback. Also there are multiple real world tests on You Tube that show the zerostat guns by any other name are far from thoroughly effective. Nagaoka record sleeves add a dollar to every record you need to put them in. The vinyl hobbyist is supposed to be into the hobby for the joy of looking at and enjoying vinyl the way it came. If your miracle gun eliminates static what are you worried about? Your records may come with a printed sleeve with more information about the record or the band.

Thought so. I grew up in America and lived a few years in Italy and was trying to pinpoint the accent... Great videos... comparison videos of first editions against remasters would be great, I have a hard time deciding which are better, right now it's first editions, for cd's I mean.

Whoops...one tip you forgot. Breath and talking. (Okay maybe 2 but whos counting?) When taking a record out of the insert, don't talk and be careful with breathing. I was a competition shooter many years ago (targets, not living things) and i was trained on how to pause and shoot holding your breath. When placing a record on the platter, it is a habit of mine, not to talk especially, and hold my breath. And turntables without dust covers to me are very silly because the record spinning around creates a vortex that attracts dust while spinning.

People spend all this money for exotic feet, heavy plinths and platters and exotic materials for mats. Get your freaking turntable out of the room then you don't have to worry about vibration coming from anywhere in your turntable. It makes me laugh to see people buying a carbon fiber arm. I have a 1400 dollar guitar made off Carbon fiber on the soundboard and back because it resonates to the vibrations of the strings so beautifully. So why are you putting a resonant material on your tonearm instead of stainless steel? Why have a carbon fiber headshell if you are concerned about eliminating vibration from the music. It makes no sense. It seems to me that if you won't take your turntable out of the room then enclose it in a ceramic or glass box or even a closet to minimize your turntable being affected by the music.

Top tip to perfect vinyl playback: Sell the vinyl while prices are still crazy and go digital! ;)

Tip 1, don't use a technics 1200!

Hi Ian, sorry that the videos or too long for you. After some years of pracrice I understood that my audience likes to indulge and listen to all I have to say. Well, in most cases. Yes, my videos are not quickies but a slow and pondered hifi moment of relax and disengagement from today's frenetic world. Not for everyone, I agree.
