There's so many definitions of greatest, like technical talent (runs, range, etc.), most influential singers (inspired next generation like Elvis, or music shifts like Colbain), or other definitions. Even for technical talent you'd have to block all the opera singers(like Pavarotti) or most people wouldn't recognize most of the list, so picking a limited genre could be important.

I don't agree with their list, but I have to disagree with you. " Greatest singers " doesn't mean " Most technical singer " , if that's what it means to you then that's fine. But great vocal technique is like . . . having great quality tools to work with. It doesn't ensure you'll make a masterpiece, but it can help. I mean Whitney Houston is one of the most highly regarded singers ever and yet. . . she was outdone by lesser singers all the time. Compare her national anthem to Cher's and you can see that higher technique doesn't guarantee performance or overall skill in performing a piece.

You kind of just picked everyone with the top sales who is in every vocal simp's Top 10 pretty much, minus Etta... It always really disappoints me that we ONLY seem to think vocal technique matters when talking about " The best singers " because . . . if that's the case how come no one is putting Dimash? --- It's because people have been putting the same people at the top for a long time and putting someone young and new there is controversial despite him having OCTAVES and classical technique over everyone listed. I'd however never put him because I find his vocal choices gaudy, repulsive, not well chosen, damaging to the pieces he performs because he just wants to show off rather than perform the piece to its greatest standard. He instead looks for every chance to showcase his voice. but yeah I think there are far more interesting singers than who everyone is listing though I DO love some Aretha and Etta and M.J. and even Mariah sometimes. Like what about Donna Summer, Shirley Bassey and Kate Bush? What about Ann Wilson and Cyndi Lauper and Cher? MAHALIA JACKSON?!? I mean Cyndi has a whistle register and matches guitar riffs and has one of the best aged voices I've heard and CHER is the ONLY successful pop alto of all time and made history for having a hit in 6 decades in a row. You hear those women sing and you KNOW it is them.

Let's not pretend the " Vocal Trinity " are the best singers. They're great but let's not pretend they're untouchable. 1. Do you think it's a coincidence that all these " Huge technical vocalists " are attractive women? No, they were SELECTED. People with larger ranges and better technique are out there and HAVE been. They're just not marketable. 2. Your measurement of what a good singer is probably limited to vocal technique and range. That stuff helps but if you don't have magic in those vocal chords you just don't have it. Luckily those women have some. 3. If all you care about is vocals then you'd be asking about singers like Dimash, but you're not despite him having better technique and a larger range? Why? Because he doesn't have that magic. 4. Let's not pretend like the Vocal Trinity hasn't been shown up by lesser singers before, ESPECIALLY Whitney.

You should do a video on Tom Waits

You can't have a greatest singers list without Ann Wilson from Heart... her, Aretha, and Steve Perry were my 3.
It seems the singers picked are the iconic voices of their time and genres.

Kind of sad Karen Carpenter was at the 90s-line because she definitely deserves to be on the top in there, somewhere. I've never heard anybody sounding like her after her passing.

Yeah that is sad and even more sad was how they didn’t even say anything about her.
Where is Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries, one of the best voices. She sings so angelic like and uses keening, to represent her Irish culture. What a shame she isn't on the list.
i can't believe i didn't see chris cornell here such an amazing voice
Roy Orbison was an amazing singer. He had a four octave range.

Ye, his voice was almost operatic at times. One of the top five best technical singers on my list for sure.
I remember when they released this list. It was pretty much universally panned. Top music critics and fans in general at the time were like "179 experts? In what, because it's certainly not music!" (I'm paraphrasing of course but some of the placements and overall choices are....questionable at best.)
As a 46 year old watching this feels like seeing those mega compilation commercials back in the 80s and 90s.
This list is more broken than my marriage
How the heck are Mariah and Steve Perry so low? They're iconic voices.

Can you do a top 100 by monthly listnets
Well my guesses were Mariah Carey Whitney Houston Freddie Mercury later i also thought about MJ and Mick Jagger.
I’ve never trusted Rolling Stone when it comes to music as they mostly just focus on the sales and numbers rather than how good the music actually is.
Check out James Taylor. He's a pretty incredible musician. Also Paul Simon on his own. Made some great music with and without Garfunkel.
My three were Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, and Ann Wilson (lead singer from Heart). Honestly shocked Wilson wasn't on there.
This list is controversial though 😳 Some of the singers that are in the bottom 90-100 should be higher and some should definitely be at the top of the list, maybe ON the list particularly. And the video was made way back 2019 so that says something. And Mariah Carey should REALLY be higher, because in contrary to what Joel said, she is one of the most influential, iconic female singer of all time.

@@MemoriesLP Beyoncé: Mariah Carey was the person that made me want to sing. (2001) Christina Aguilera: I discovered Mariah in my room one day, listening to the radio… I ran downstairs going, “Mommy, Mommy, I just found the greatest person in the world!” (2000) Grimes: The first time I heard Mariah Carey, it shattered the fabric of my existence and I started Grimes. (2013) Brandy: When I first got my deal… I sang “Vision of Love.” I owe [her] everything. (2008) Nelly Furtado: She kind of taught me how to sing, because, you know, [I] couldn’t really afford singing lessons. (2006) Rihanna: Her voice is an instrument. Unreal, really. (2013) Whitney Houston: Mariah is a hell of a vocalist, let me tell you. She can go. (1998) Stevie Wonder: When people talk about the great influential singers, they talk about Aretha, Whitney and Mariah… her range is that amazing. (2008) Snoop Dogg: When I was locked up in jail, “Vision of Love” was the hottest song in the world. I used to always say, “Man, if I could meet her!” (2005) Mary J. Blige: Mariah Carey’s music saved little ghetto children’s lives… we would sing those songs and try to hit every note. (2005) Jermaine Dupri: If you put Mariah Carey on one side of the street and you put one of these other artists on the other side and say, “Sing,” who gonna win? That’s cut-and-dry. (2014) Justin Bieber: My favorite singer is Mariah Carey. (2015) Simon Cowell: Unbelievable songwriter. Interesting, unpredictable. (2011) Janet Jackson: I don’t think people give Mariah enough credit. She was wonderful in Glitter. (2006) Adele: Mariah is the ultimate diva. (2011). Do I need to add some more?
Finding out this list came out in 2010 makes a lot of sense because I was like where the hell are some of the modern powerhouses like Adele, Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, Cynthia Erivo, etc. If you're basing this purely on vocal talent, they deserve those spots WAY more than many of the people who were included (even if some of the listed people do have legend status).

I played as well and guessed Robert Plant, Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury. Probably the safest options but whatever.
Frank Sinatra, Celine Dion and Lionel Richie
I forgot that Luis Miguel is dedicated to golf, that's why his absence here. LOL
I really recommend you to listen to the amazing british pop, pop-rock band The Vamps and maybe react to them in some way like listening to their 5th album and the newest "Cherry Blossom" and giving your opinion. And as I also said before their most popular songs that literally everyone knows is "Somebody To You" and "All Night" but they have so many more great songs that I also prefer to the most popular. Hope you see this as last time!!
Ok, The Beach Boys bit made me choke on my lunch. lol
